Starfleet Subspace Communicator Teardown (21st Century Earth Issue)

Comments

How does Starfleet handle the loss of communicators? Surely it would be a CCI "Controlled Cryptographic Item". I can't count the number of times communicators and phasers were confiscated during some away mission. Surely the communicators are "keyed" with a time-sensitive cryptographic code. Or, maybe not? Can a Klingon just take a communicator from some Starfleet officer and have instant access to the subspace frequency network? Even frequency hopping requires a coded key. But no one seems to care that communicators should be a COMSEC risk. An adversary can reverse-engineer a communicator, like you did, and crack the subspace codes. Unless there is some sort of biometric connection between a communicator and its owner, how do they risk letting a communicator falling into enemy hands? And think of the implication of phaser weapons falling into the hands of adversaries during battle, or the usual no-fight away-team surrender of weapons? Even a Tricorder could contain sensor technology that could be advantageous to an enemy with less sophisticated sensor technology. There's a huge problem with intellectual property loss and the undoing of billions of dollars worth of encryption technology that would have to be replaced. I mean, if they make communicators in China, how secure can it be? If you can buy one, anyone can. I demand an accountability program regarding all weapons and equipment deployed during away-team activities. This could be a major issue with the Romulans!

Thank God they got rid of the Lithium Ion battery, when the realised how environmentally destructive lithium mining was. Notice I used the old nomenclature for the universal force to stay in character with the past.
