Spaceflight: Thunder In The Skies - V2 to X-15

From my archives, and to this day still one of my favorite documentaries and one of the most  detailed explorations of the early days of rocketry - Spaceflight aired  on the A&E network in 1986 and definitely holds its ground today as an important record of the foundations of the space age.  Part one takes us from the German rocket clubs of the 1920's to the breaking of the sound barrier in the X-1, to flight at the edge of space in the amazing X-15.

Part one of this series is the most unique. But I've got other stuff in the queue.

I've been something of a space enthusiast since I was a kid in the '50s, so I've seen all of the standard clips as well, but as with everyone else, a lot of this was new to me.

Mike Hughes

Thanks! I had not seen that before and a lot of the footage, especially the early stuff, was new to me.

Mark Sundstrom

I had the entire series on VHS cassettes, now long lost. I'd forgotten how good it was. Thank you, Fran.

This was a fun Sunday morning watch. My father took me to visit Cape Kennedy from Michigan in 1969 to see Apollo 11 before the launch. I was devastated when I was told that my imperfect eyesight would prohibit me from from being selected for flight school. I had been studying space travel and rocketry from the moment I was allowed to choose my own reading material at the library. Goddard was my hero. Reading about his team and their work in New Mexico was inspiring. Thanks, Fran.

It is a brilliant documentary compilation.
