The Men Who Own The World - Or At Least Claim To!

Hey Kids!  I have had to take down my Voyager Record video from 2017 due  to a cascade of new copyright claims.  Often in these robo-spam auto claims I file a dispute and in 30 days if there is no retort from the claimant I can put the video back up live again.  But all they have to  do is say - "Yea, I own that. Nuff Said." and boom... I've got no recourse but to take it down.  No one to actually verify that they DO have a claim on that audio.  I really hate the whack-a-mole game that YouTube does with audio claims, and the fact that seemingly anyone can get in on the game whether they own a copyright or not.  Just make a bot - claim you own a bunch of obscure audio clips - file millions of claims - and if 99.9% of them are disputed, you still make good change.  Don't you just love these guys?   They own Kurt Waldheim!

Damn! Depending on your perspective, that either sucks or blows!

My nephew had that happen to all of his own recordings.. Some bot came along and said all his originals were not his. He had to fight for a while to get it reversed.

It's probably bad karma for posting that LM clip you were not supposed to show - space is interconnected with magnetic fields to keep the matrix balanced

I can see that after our first contact with other intelligent races, the second will be a lawyer sending a notice to pay copyright fees.

Vimeo is a *bit* better about this shit (still not perfect, but they're less trigger-happy about it) so maybe upload stuff to both sites so if one gets taken down you can redirect people to the other?

Shame Boy

I really hate bullshit people like that.

Fred

Wow, now that's some breaking news! Did they just announce that like today?

Slightly on/off topic with YouTube and their ambiguous rules, would be interested to hear your thoughts on the LGBTQI+ creators who have launched a class action against Google/YouTube for demonitizing and age restricting their content.

whew! Thanks, now I don't have to stay up nights worrying about who owns Kurt Waldheim anymore! Not the bot uprising I was expecting, but I guess it'll have to do for now. Thanks for sharing. It was a very interesting listen.

Wait just one second, NASA is enforcing copyright claims now? Because according to Wikipedia "In July 2015, NASA uploaded the audio contents of the record to the audio streaming service SoundCloud". So they are obviously the owners of the copyright. I wonder what Carl would say??

People suck sometimes

Maybe you could re upload the video to the Internet Archive? They’ve at least got a deeper understand of copyright/public domain than the average robot... Ewen

Unfortunately I don’t think copyright robots will ever understand “this is not copyright” :-( Sorry you had to take it down. But in these days of “notice and takedown” and heavy automation, I suspect a couple of years was a good run. Ewen

What a crock! Stuff like this boils my urine! These copyright rules are designed to protect peoples IP, trouble is slimy suits and cyber grifters have swooped in to try and make an easy buck. These people are not creators or protectors they are vultures.

Uhhh.. what!? The Youtube guys are to funny.... or nuts. The Voyager records are up on archive.org. Just search for "Voyager record".

That’s a real shame, that was in my recommend today and I watched it. It was a great video and I never dreamed I would ever hear what was on the records. Thank you Fran for making it and giving me the opportunity to experience it.
