Bargain Thermal Imaging Camera Unboxing

Good deal or utter crap?  You be the judge!  I unbox and test a new IR camera I got for the DSKY Display Project, and reading the manual I learn a new exciting language.  Can I has potent camera assistance?  Yes no menu.  Enjoy!

And yes... I have seen the Applied Science video.  More on that later....

I believe you could have used this for your stated purpose after getting used to it. One of your objectives is to check how even the temperature is distributed - this does that. I just found this in my email, and apparently you posted it the same day that Ben posted his DSKY solution, and you subsequently abandoned that project - meaning you may no longer have a use for this. Whatever - I enjoyed watching you play with this and found this somewhat enlightening.

I don't understand why you keep saying you can't use this scientifically...as a scientist I most often work with relative/comparative observation/measurements, without the need of a fully calibrated quantitation

I think you would be way better off with the HT-A1 unit. You can power it over MicroUSB, it can be hacked and has a better resolution (160x220 versus 32x32) I made a blogpost about my device: http://www.blog.zapro.dk/?p=469

This one really deserves a do-over. (First time I've *ever* said that about a FranLab video.) Thermal imaging is easy enough to do "good enough", but a bit tougher to do "right". However, even a cheap instrument can be "trained" to give great results! Before taking another look, please get some sleep. I think you invented a few new laws of physics during this one, and maybe broke some.

I wonder if emissivity is the reason why the temperature reading drops when you point it at the tip?
