Big Time Storage

She's the last of the V-8 interceptors... a piece of history (a lot like myself) better than a truck and definitely the best hauling machine ever made in America.... And invaluable now that the big move-out has begun! How do you increase the capacity of a storage unit another 100 square feet? By adding a mega storage shelving unit, that's how! I fabricated the pieces for this dense pack shelving unit at the FranLab factory and am installing at the storage locker. It will hold 100 crates, is completely modular, and can be disassembled for transport. Should have it completed in a day or two. Just one of many engineering challenges in the big move out, many more to come.

I just love your attention to detail and neatness; inspiring :)

My great uncle had that exact car. It was awesome to take trips in. You could haul everything and bicycles along 6 people with room to spare. Keep n mind 3 passengers were kids.

Got to love the ole wagons. Good luck with the move Fran!

I was just trying to be cool by quoting a line from The Road Warrior.

Since you mention "Interceptor", I imagine yours is a Caprice ... I had a 1992 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon for 5 years or so. It was, strangely enough, my "dream car" from when I was an impetuous buck (I really wanted a high-power sleeper in a station wagon.) I drove it halfway across the U.S. 3 times and it sure was swell. As I blogged about it ( http://jayceland.com/LunchNStuff/Archives/2007208.html ), it was "twice the weight of my Civic, twice the power, half the gas mileage, a full foot wider, 10 inches taller, and 5 feet longer".

Way back in the 50s when I was small boy, one of my Dads had an American friend who imported his Chevrolet wagon. I can' remember the model, but it was the one where the saloon had those wonderful curved horizontal wings. It was huge. It would fit two sets of parents and six kids with no trouble. Cruising round Glasgow was magical. It was a very bright sky blue, and by far the brightest thing on the road!

Oh dear! My memory isn't what it was. The Volvo on Seinfeld was a 960 Estate which would normally have a 3 litre V6, but this was custom built for David Letterman (not Steve Martin) by Paul Newman's racing team. They had already built one for Paul, and it had a Ford V8 and gearbox from a Mustang! I love the idea of a muscle car disguised as a station wagon. I once had a Volvo 122S wagon and that was huge fun. If I had been living in the US in the 90, I would probably have owned something that looked like a gentlemans cruiser, but that could burn of the boy racers at the lights!

maybe an articulated truck could be the new franlab? breaking bad style.

And best of luck with the move.

BTW The nearest I have seen to that sort of thing now is Steve Martins Volvo Estate. You'll find it on Jerry Seinfeld's "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" on either YouTube or Netflix. The motorway cops in the UK have some of the slightly tamer T5 version for chasing boy racers. I was cruising up the M1 at 70mph about when they first appeared, and a BMW 5 series went passed me very fast, and about 30 secs late one of those Volvo's followed with only his blue lights, but even faster!

That looks like an interesting beast to own! I looked it up on Google and found this: http://hooniverse.com/2014/07/04/hooniverse-obscure-muscle-car-garage-the-1994-96-buick-roadmaster-estate-wagon/

The last of the full sized rear wheel drive positraction V-8 wagons.

Roadmaster - with the mid deck sunroof and three rows of seats...

I remember those big "family truckster". One of the selling points was you could get a 4x8' sheet of plywood in the back and still close the tail gate. Best of luck on your move Fran. And please take care of yourself, too!

Looks like you've begun fighting back the smart way. The wagon reminds me of my 88 XF Falcon wagon in champagne gold....and the 73 XB Falcon Coupe (V8 interceptor).

Just a 'wee bit' bigger than my trusty (1983) Subaru Wagon! Wish you all the very best with your forced move, Fran. You never know what might be just around that corner, he says optimistically :-)

Piero Davies

My Nissan Quest van is bigger than that (last week I put 3 boxes in there that originally held kitchen appliances, without folding them down - we're working on something for Halloween) but I approve!

Jac Goudsmit

I guess that's gonna have to be FranLab's future--all mobile, ready to bug out at a moment's notice once these dickhead landlords close in....

That's for border crossings :)

Look at that beast! I like wagons. Had a Passat and for the last 10 years a Volvo. But yours is truly a behemoth. Glad to hear that a task is keeping your mind and hands busy.

What on earth is in those GIANT side panels in the back?

EEVblog

But ya can’t shut the gate on this one, Fran... it’s the ducks guts!

This is the last of the oldtime full size Ford station wageons? Love them. The last one we had was a 1968 wagon we drove for 15 years.

Emily Meyerding

Is it a Buick Century?

My favorite car was my 2000 Saab 95 Aero wagon. It could fit 2 APC 5000 kvA rack-mount UPSs in their shipping boxes.

lohphat

You will make it!

Dang! If you weren't 3000 miles away, I'd be happy to do some hauling duty for you with my 1990 3/4-ton Dodge.

Gee Bee

Nothing helps dealing with stressful situation more than taking action. When all is said and done, the new FranLab will be better than ever! Good on ya Fran!

Awesome photo. I'm seriously tempted to buy an old station wagon now instead of a truck.

Emily Allan

I have always said they need to start making station wagons again! So very useful. And the small pickup trucks too.

William Alsing

Very organised storage. Is that a Jensen Interceptor with an enormous engine to go with the enormous car?
