Make The Ultimate Center Punch!

A quick video to show how to make one of my most used tools - a modified spring filled center punch that I call a 'pinger'.  Enjoy - and Happy Pinging!

Make The Ultimate Center Punch!

That's cool. Leads one to wonder what other tools could be likewise modified...

Very cool.

I would not call this the "ultimate" center punch for at least a couple of reasons. First is that now it takes up significantly more space in the toolbox. Second, the sideways handle applies pressure at an angle to the line of operation instead of inline to the line of operation making the operator have to grip it harder, not put downward pressure on the away end of the handle, or to take other countermeasures to force the pressure to stay in line making the tool less efficient to use. If the problem is the discomfort that pressing with high force on the small area at the end of the tool causes, I would recommend beveling the end of the same dowel into a rounded shape, then cutting it off about an inch or so down and drilling the flat end to accept the shaft of the punch. That way, it would disperse the pressure over a large area while maintaining pressure in line with the operation of the tool while not significantly increasing the size of the tool. You probably wouldn't even have to grip it at all once palm pressure was applied to lessen the chance of discomfort from gripping a tool too tightly if you have carpal tunnel issues.

Great idea for people with keyboard RSI like me. Thanks Fran!

I had never heard of an optical punch before this, interesting. I could see using an optical punch for specific use cases, but a standard center punch or automatic (spring actuated) center punch are more versatile. Fits in a pocket, works on round stock and in the case of an automatic center punch, doesn't require a hammer or mallet. I've never had an automatic center punch I liked. I can't seem to consistently get them to activate. Probably user error, though I have been told it's because I have never bought a quality automatic center punch.

I like this but I've gotten used to using an optical center punch.

I love it, I will go and do this to mine right now.
