Its not viewed as an act of "love", because they don't even have the word "love" during this time period. So the idea of western love and pillowing being a core sacred aspect of that love, is not same for the Japanese (as portrayed in the book I don't know what 1600's japan was really like historically). Which is why the conversations are so open
