POD 94: Bobby Beausoleil on taking LSD with Charles Manson

In this episode I speak with convicted murderer and former Manson Family associate Bobby Beausoleil about his time recording music with Charles Manson and how a peyote deal gone wrong set in motion a series of crimes that forever changed the counterculture and public perception of psychedelic drugs.

Bobby, Patricia, and Leslie have proven to be people of true integrity with age and time. What a tragic mess....

I had no idea Charles Manson was a short king

I believe that some of it can be accessed from the DEA website -> additional resources tab.

I would have liked to ask him why he wrote "Political Piggy" on the wall if the "Helter Skelter" narrative was made up by Bugliosi. If what Bobby claims is true about the murder, then I don't see why that would be on his mind to write on the wall unless he was influenced by Manson to do so. I know Susanne Atkins claims she only wrote it on the wall at the scene of the Tate murders to make it seem like a copycate to help get Bobby out of jail. Which would then line up with Bobby's claim that it had nothing to do with Helter Skelter, but then what would Bobby's reason to write it be? And why was "War" and "Helter Skelter" written at the scene of the LaBianca murders? Like I understand that he felt Manson was not smart enough to come up with some elaborate plan for a hoax that could start a war, but I don't feel what they did was that elaborate. Most people didn't even understand the context in which those things were written until Bugliosi put the pieces together, so it clearly wasn't a very good or well thought out plan. Seems fairly reasonable to think Manson could have absolutely influenced those around him to believe some noneses like an immanent race war, especially if he was so influential as Bobby admits. I also find it strange that Bobby would claim to know so much about what went on at the commune while also stating he wasn't part of the commune and didn't want to be. Why would Manson allow him to be there so often if we wasn't actually "in" it. Especially when there was a vetting process for members. So they wouldn't just allow anyone to join, but this guy was allowed to hang out there enough to have extensive inner knowledge of what went on but not have to actively be a part of it? I feel like this interview raised more questions then it did answers.

You sure know how to tickle my fancy when it comes to journalism. such a great job at conveying passion through your work. American and prison systems I hope one day will catch up on rehabilitation standards. Job well done to you both. Thanks for the nugget!!!!!

It does sound like that...but no.

After hearing his comment, it made me think the same thing. I’d always heard about strychnine being in acid back in the day. Urban legend or some shady chemist addition?

Jason MF

I think he was running out of time on the call so he just jumped to, "I killed him," sparing us the details. He stabbed him to death.

Kaleb

Mr. Beausoleil's story is very interesting. Sad how the tragedies unfolded. Thank you for sharing.

Hello everyone, love you all for being patrons here, QUESTION: Where would one submit an article they've written on psychedelic subjects, specifically a reaction to a disingenuous article found on dailymail. Anyone? Thank you!

Pvt. Idaho

Getting shit faced drunk and then adding really any other substance just isn’t gonna go well, the alcohol is just overwhelming enough as it is lol, your generally not gonna have a good time at that point, no one needs peyote at that point, pedialite, there ya go, there’s your least regrettable option lol

Jeff

Was not expecting such a quick escalation into the ending, gonna need to hear another few rounds of prison talk.….. soooo this dude thinks he killed a guy who died from bleeding out I guess, from being slashed in the face by another guy….. just because he didn’t take that injured guy to the hospital, is that why this dude thinks he killed a guy?

Jeff

Loved. Also, I'm working on my federal register comment for DOI and I was wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to see the data from the National Forensic Laboratory Information System referenced in factors 4 and 5? I'm interested in what's in these law enforcement reports and it seems we should be able to review those, right? Thank you!

It's interesting that Bobby said Gary knew to cut off the spines and skin of the peyote to remove the strychnine before boiling it down to powder. I'm sure peyote doesn't contain any strychnine, but there is all sorts of lore about strychnine contamination in LSD, which is also unlikely. I wonder how this urban legend about strychnine in psychedelic drugs got started.

Hamilton you are such a gift to our generation. Thank you for blessing my ears, soul and deeply my brain

102:30 Hamilton rippin that pen 👀👀

Salvatore Deschino

Peyote routinely makes people feel sick, I’m assuming Bobby didn’t know they were called tufts or trichomes. He probably hasn’t seen a cactus in over fifty years.

Hamilton Morris

If his memory of the ‘peyote’ having spines is correct then it’s possible that it wasn’t peyote at all. Maybe could have been matucana madisoniorum, which would explain why it only made the bikers sick

Tom Suazo

I’m intrigued. Can you speak on this a bit more?

Ryan Campbell

I appreciate the edit in the last few seconds of the interview.... *prison line goes dead prematurely, Hamilton mutters "Jesus". Bobby's personal story was fascinating and super tragic. Great interview, so cool that you have produced a new primary source on this historical crime 👍

Aidan

21:19 I wish he talked more about Lil Xan’s involvement here

Andy

Had no idea but can't get over the fact this man was one of the founding members of the group "Love". That's so cool.
