In the funeral scene, I always interpreted the shift in Light’s expression as a mix of anger and disappointment. I think he genuinely enjoyed being challenged. But now, in this final moment of gloating, there's no reaction, no rival to spar with. He’s speaking to a wall. There’s nothing left, and I think that realization hits him.

Re: the Shinigami, Ryuk was telling him the story of Light because the Shinigami was curious & wanted to know about the human world. It was a fan theory that the Shinigami is Light but there’s nothing really to back this up. Re: the funeral, the scene was cut a bit short. The rest of the police were there saying goodbye with Light, which is why he looks respectful at the start. They left Light to have a private moment. Which is funny to think they’ve only just left while Light is screaming at L’s grave. I also think the change in expression after Light claims he won might be disappointment & the realisation that L can’t respond or give anything back anymore. Re: the speech, it was about L himself but Near was remembering it & how L said he’d be eaten by the same kind of monster & that helped Near realise what Light probably was. I do find it interesting how L says things like eating without experiencing hunger (he’s always eating sweets), studying not caring about academics (number 1 detective), seeking friendship but not understanding love (tries to befriend Light). Before the Kira case, L just spent his life locked up in a room talking to a computer & had no human connections outside Watari. It sounds like he’s interpreting his emptiness, depression & disconnection from humanity as him being a monster, which might be the most relatable thing about L in the whole series.
