September 28 Update

Unusual time for a weekly update, but it's been an unusual week. Going to quick let people know what has been going on, plus bring up a couple issues in case people have anything to say. My week has been scattered among various things...

TLS 0.75.5: New public build. Don't like to do this, but I also don't like to leave the main build with any issues that inconvenience players.

Final Optional Dungeon Work: This week was less productive than the last on this account, but I'm getting more and more pieces in place for the next major build. There are various elements to wrangle, but once the core pieces are ready, it's not that huge or complicated.

$10 Art Post: Posted another one, as Annikath continues to work on more scenes. These three will be available in the 0.76.x builds. Rescued Erosians, Orilise x Altina, Robin Transformation - fun set!

Narrative Developer: I imagine some of you have seen the trailer for Threads of Time? It is very pretty, which as everyone knows is all that matters in an RPG. The reason I bring it up is that the company actually posted a job listing for a Narrative Designer - this is the first time in my life I have ever seen an indie studio treat writing as a real skill. I would have said it never happened, but looks like I'm wrong at least once. Canadians only, though. T-T

Random Companies: Has anyone heard of Mythcarver Games or Cathar Games? I know some of you are indie lovers, or pay attention to the indie space, so please speak up if they (or their attached projects) have any kind of reputation.

Writing: A post with writing updates has been long overdue, but TLS things keep happening. Maybe I can get it in before the optional dungeon update?

Alright, I think that's everything. It's a long shot, but speak up if you have any information on the companies. With this I have cleared out my head a little, so hopefully next week will be more focused on major objectives instead of playing whack-a-mole with little ones.

Thank you for checking with people.

A couple of days back I talked to a couple of gamedev friends of mine (one of whom is currently pretty high up in a moderately well known game company, and the other who is currently not working as a gamedev but did work for a very major game company in the past) and neither had heard anything good or bad concerning Mythcarver or Cathar Games. I've personally never heard of either of the two studios either. After looking them up I recall being vaguely interested in one of Mythcarver's games "One Lonely Outpost" based on a trailer I saw at the time, but I never looked into the game further when it released into early access to mixed reviews.

Now that we're touching the end of the story, and most mysteries have been revealed, I wonder what would be the result of a new popularity pool.... I also wonder what would be the most hated characters. Just to rank them of course, because I already have a good idea on who would be hated XDXDXD

I don't know if it's because of something I've done, some threshold I've reached or something one of the new versions introduced but V0.75.5 is noticeably "hitchy", laggy and delayed for me. Trying V0.75.4 and 0.75.3 there seems to be a bit less of a problem but I can't rule out it being completely gone yet and it's hard to tell as it isn't consistent. It's especially noticeable in dialogue scenes where sometimes pressing enter to advance doesn't register and sometimes just takes a second or so, but some scene or location transitions are also quite a bit slower/laggy/delayed. Saving and loading has being been getting progressively slower as well, possibly also more in the newer version, but in general it is getting pretty bogged down by the time of "Return to Stineford" for me overall.

Makes sense for the prologue, So Kai can have a Bust and simon not have a bust in the prologue, But Tal and other chosen.....Oh and I always found the Skullpounder not having a bust was funny.

Q-Riff

That's true, but I'm not sure it's a bad thing. Making the Chosen seem important will help with the prologue twist, and I hope it makes the Skullpounder's death more of a surprise for new players.

Sierra Lee

One thing I had the problem is in this update cycle is the busts for chosen and incubus kings like Skullpounder; Giving them busts implies that they are important characters but in reality they have the lifespan of a.mayfly.

Q-Riff

Hello, glad you're enjoying it! Don't worry: saves are almost always completely compatible in both directions. Version 0.76.x will add content to the very end of the game, and while it will polish some other elements, it won't change anything that would really affect your run.

Sierra Lee

I don't know how much they'd count my experience for, but I guess I won't find out because I'm ineligible. -_-

Sierra Lee

> It is very pretty, which as everyone knows is all that matters in an RPG. Oh, come on. Brand recognition also goes a long way into making numbers!

Rachnera

It does say SENIOR Narrative Designer, at that, so it does look like it will need pretty significant experience in order for them to hire... but then, you have that. :D

SEEQYR

I forgot to mention the estimate time of the release of the new major update? and sorry for the long reply

SilverMKX

Hi Sierra Thanks for creating this complex game, it's probably my best H-Game that I played so far. I have a question and I hope for your reply. I have started my first TLS with update 0.74 and reached till the very beginningof chapter 4, but after seeing the new update 0.75.5, and how beautiful it looked, I decided to start a new run (and I wanted to because I made a lot of bad decisions in the 1st run LOL). but now I'm concerned about if the new major update (0.76) will affect my run in update 0.75.5 , and I wanted to ask if it will "affect" my run if the next major update drops and I decide to transfer my 0.75.5 saves to the new one (0.76)

SilverMKX

Yeah, I read the job description as being brute writing filling out a game. Not the most exciting part, but it's not like I don't do all of that for my own work anyway, and I think there'd be hypothetical value in working with a larger team. Thank you for asking around!

Sierra Lee

Narrative Designer isn't solely a writing job, though that depends on the listing (yeah, that listing is writing-based). Still, well up your alley, given the entirety of your oeuvre. I should know, I'm doing it atm for an indie studio, in conjunction with every other design task since we're a tiny team (:P). It can be about designing systems in line with integrating the writing, not necessarily doing the writing itself (that's what specific writers are for). Oh yeah, they're a JRPG. We're also doing that, kind of, at a significantly lower budget level. Cereal Killaz from Mythcarver sounds VAGUELY familiar, but that's about it. I'll ask my team lead since he's much more knowledgeable about the game industry, being as he's much more well-connected in the indie space. Albeit, American indie space, which is not quite the same thing as the ones above. Edit: He's not heard of either of them. Nothing bad, definitely, though.

SEEQYR

Ah, makes sense, I must have gotten a bit confused. Most games can be improved with a good story added on, with strategy games such as people looking back fondly on the Dawn of War games for their writing, or in more recent examples the success of Tactical Breach Wizards partially due to their snappy writing

Treeman4

They make strategy games, right? I don't think of those as being writing heavy, but I may be mistaken. In any case, they're a publisher, so they're looking for complete teams.

Sierra Lee

Thank you for the updates on everything! ^~^

Argo The Ratfolk

If looking at companies that support writers and stranger products, Hooded Horse is a good publisher/indie company from what i've heard. They tend to focus on games that are made for a pretty narrow group of interest but its made specifically for that group.
