there's a deleted scene from this movie where it's explained why Beckett had Jack branded a pirate... it's because East India Trading Company was into the slave trade and Jack freed one of the ships. Beckett tells him he had a contract to ship cargo, and Jack tells Beckett "people aren't cargo, mate"
