THE NEWSREADER EP 1-2 FULL LENGTH REACTION ( Favorite Pilot of 2025??!!)

Dang I totally missed the coercive undertones of that scene with Helen and Lindsay during my first watch, but you’re totally right! Yikes. And I think you hit the nail on the head by pointing out that Noelene is a minority in two different ways as a Korean woman. These first two episodes do a great job of capturing the types of systemic and interpersonal barriers women in that industry had to navigate in the 80s.

I'm SO excited that you're watching this and also that you were so on board right from the first episode. This show is incredible. Sam Reid is such a talented actor. Dale Jennings, especially in these early episodes, is a loser in a way that we never saw Lestat be and it's impressive that one actor could play both of those characters in back to back season (this first season was filmed before Interview with the Vampire started but Newsreader season two was filmed after IWTV season one). I love Anna Torv in this but I've never seen her in anything else. Your praise of her might have convinced me to finally watch Mindhunter!

Shrinking, eh? Did not realize who it was by 👀

I forgot how freaking GOOD this show is! It's been well over a year since I've watched this. I love seeing Sam lose himself into Dale, as he does with Lestat. I remember her from Fringe, loved seeing her years later in Mindhunter, and think she's absolutely phenomenal since the Newsreader. When I try to explain this series to others, I reference Mad Men as an example of that show being a behind the scenes look into an ad agency in the 1960s, and the Newsreader of a live news network in the 80s. There's drama, there's laugh out loud moments, there's times when you want to cry. SO underrated, I wish more people watched this, but I'm so glad I get to finally chat about this with folks here!! Your mom is born the same year as my older brother who is a decade older than I am! Funnily enough, my brother is born on the exact same day when Lestat asks Louis, "September 8th, 1973... September 8th, 1973... did you hurt yourself?" I send a photo of that scene as a Happy Birthday to my brother ever since we've watched IWTV when it first came out 🤣😂🤣

YESSS FINALLY!!!!!!! I'm so glad you're finally on this train!!! Also the story you told about trying to be present through depression while being a councilor is quite literally the plot of the show Shrinking, written and directed by Brett Goldstein who plays Roy Kent ;)

Anna and Sam really are incredible in this show! this is where i discovered them both and it made me watch their other projects. Also, Helene is personally in my top 3 favorite tv show characters ever! the evolution of her character throughout the show is top tier Very excited to see your reaction to the rest of the series, so far, I'm really enjoying your thoughtful commetaries. I subbed for only a month but I'm definitely going to renew my subscription !

Please be careful about anything even slightly spoiler-ish for future seasons.

Yeah… you know exactly where it was going with Lindsay. That’s why I love the female direction here, because there’s a real element of danger. He gave her Valium (allegedly a low dose but she was very relaxed and out of it) and plied her with alcohol, and then started the long song and dance about how she owes him. Then he IMMEDIATELY bounced once Dale came in, like his hand was caught in the cookie jar. Foul behavior. Thank you, Dale. THANK YOU, Dale.

This is my first time watching, loving it so far!

And that improv’d scene is easily in my top 3 favorite scenes of the whole show. Still makes me cry. They’re really both just so good at what they do and so good playing off each other.

One of the many things I love about this show is its depiction of what it was like trying to be a career woman in the 80s. You can see it through Helen, of course, but also through Noelene (who I adore!). The misogyny is not even veiled. The way they talk about Helen behind her back infuriates me. I love that Dale is so kind and caring that he makes Helen feel safe enough to show and share her vulnerability with him. I think it's a big part of why she's drawn to him.

So happy to see you react to this. Anna and Sam are incredible in it. And it's just so cool to see Sam playing a character that's so different to Lestat. He's an incredible actor. Also, I listened to Anna Torv on an Australian podcast for season 3 and she said one particular scene in it was all improv with her and Sam. And it's a pretty big scene. And i think she did say they're pretty free with what they do, and they can change things up and improv a bit. I love that. Adds to how real it is. The portrayal of racism, sexism, and homophobia is also so well done - from the smaller micro-aggressions to the bigger more obvious stuff. It's just so well written and acted.
