Good question that! It all depends on the wall thickness of the tyre and the type of compound used as to what hysteresis losses are encountered when you deform the tyre. Pretty much all of my 'proper' gravel rides on this bike are avg speed <20kmh so aero is not a consideration for me at all, the wider more supple tyres definitely seem to roll faster on rougher terrain. I have a pod soon with Dylan Johnson, and again with Dan Bigham so i will be discussing tyre dynamics with them do not worry!

You had mentioned in the podcast that mtb tires are faster than gravel tires for the same size, but what about 27.5" mtb tires? My bike's max clearance is 700x47 and 650x54. So would a 27.5"x2.1" (650x54) be faster than a 700x47 (including aero @30kph as a consideration)? Apologies for the mixed units, I'm American.
