How to Figure Out Why You Enjoy Something

Yes, Missy and I watch the show Alone. And we laugh. A lot. Far more often than—and in places that—the people making the show would never expect. In fact, one of the things that guarantees a lack of laughter on our part is a contestant doing something they are sure is hilarious. That’s always comedy death. But soon enough a contestant will give themselves food poisoning, or accidentally drop a fish they are showing off back into the water, or get repeatedly outsmarted by a rodent, and I’ll be laughing again.

I don’t like to think that I’m a bad person, or that I take pleasure in other people’s misery, but on Alone, all of the misery is 100% self inflicted. These people worked hard to get on the show, and can end all their suffering with one phone call.

I do have to admit though, the fact that I’ve taken a fair amount of guff in my time for not liking hunting and fishing, from people who acted very much like the contestants on the show, probably does figure into my enjoyment.
