How to Gain the Perspective That Only Comes with Age

Yes, I wrote this during the Olympics. Specifically, while watching the BMX Freestyle competition. If you have seen none of it, I suggest you check out the highlights, at least. Yes, I was aware of the X-Games, but the state of the art has progressed since I last paid any attention, and these riders were regularly doing things that caused Missy and I to shout, “What the F?!” in unison.

Several of them started with a move called a “tail-whip,” which literally was not possible on the bikes we rode, because our bikes had brakes, an antiquated bit of equipment that would literally just get in these riders’ way.

I was surprised to see one rider go forward up a ramp, then do a front flip, which seems to me, should be physically impossible.

A couple of riders later, someone did a front flip with a twist, which is just showing off.

Seeing the kinds of things it’s possible for a kid these days to attempt on a bike, I defy any sane parent to not at least bug their kids to wear a helmet. Most probably consider making them wear one of those padded suits they use to teach self-defense courses.

I will be skipping next week to deal with other business. The comic will be back the week after that. Sorry for the delay.
