Exclusive: Spear vs dagger - WHICH DOES MORE DAMAGE?!?

Comments

I definitely agree with Shads basic premise. Fundamentally if you have the same blade on all your weapons, and your method of striking transfers the same force then damage will be equal. The difference comes in from the balance of secondary aspects, like form and strength determining how much force transfer you personally are capable of generating. (Example some of those dagger strikes were not the best edge alignment and thus some of the force was lost.) And penetration at equal force transfer will depend on blade structure. Shoot who knows how much a sharp blade vs a dull blade effects the ability to penetrate the target material... I know some material dull blades are better other sharpness is key! Lots of technical neuanse at play if you want to be technical! Also after reading lots of comments, too many people want to include " chance to hit" as part of weapon damage. From a dev/programming perspective damage only takes effect after a hit has been made and any defense modifiers are applied. So how easy it is to hit vs what the max damage should be on a perfect hit is apples and oranges in this context. It definitely is a valid part of DPS though...

I totally agree, form and skill will have a large difference in potential damage. And watching them test you can see there is clearly more force transfer with the dagger vs the spear. I definitely agree with Tyrith, that wable in the spear was hurting force transfer. I can also tell they are both more practiced with the dagger than the spear. Would really love to see a skilled spearman brought in to this test, and use a force meter to see how much actual force gets transferred, that will also let you test how much blade profile effects penetration. If force is equal then any difference should be blade profile. And you can see if you made a bad strike due to bad form if the force is way less than your normal. Extremely interesting πŸ€”

I would also like to mention that as a martial artist, something I predicted prior to watching the test, was actually that a dagger would do *more* damage than the spear. That it did. Why did I think that? Structure. I have noticed in my own playing around and experimenting that the structure is different in a subtle but crucial way that I can't quite explain in this exact moment. Maybe something about the centerpoint of your overall body structure in the strike or something? A good thrust with the dagger, roughly the way you and Tyranth were doing it, supports the force and structure with the structure and muscles of your back... at least more easily than with a spear With a spear the force and structure is supported by your arms more, and I tried putting more "back" and "waist" into it... but it's at least tricky for me, if not simply structurally different by its very nature.
