A Man Changed my Opinion about a Whole Country [ES/EN]

Hace 5 años hice un viaje, en coche, a Portugal. Un road trip con dos amigas.

5 years ago I did a trip, by car, to Portugal. A road trip with two friends.

Y en ese viaje conocí a un portugués. Ese portugués cambió por completo manera de ver a los portugueses. O sea yo tengo la opinión que tengo de  Portugal por esa persona.

And on that trip I met a Portuguese. That Portuguese completely changed the way I see the Portuguese. In other words, I have the opinion that I have of Portugal because of that person.

Veréis, como ya he dicho éramos tres amigas de las cuales solo conducía yo ¿vale? Además que era en este coche,  en este coche hicimos el viaje ¿vale? Este fue el coche que nos llevó por Portugal.

You see, as I said, we were three friends and only I drove, okay? Also, it was in this car, we went on the trip with this car , okay? This was the car that took us through Portugal.

El Yarisito. ¡Guapo! Es que le amo.

The Yarisito. Handsome! I just love him.

Sorry. Perdón, me puede la pasión. Y entonces fue en este coche yo era la única que podía conducir porque era la única que tenía el carnet.

Sorry. Sorry, passion took over. So it was in this car. I was the only one who could drive because I was the only one who had my license.

Y entonces el primer pueblo por el que pasamos fue Monsanto. Y entonces este pueblito está encima de una colina.

And so the first town we passed through was Monsanto. And this little town is on top of a hill.

Nosotras empezamos a subir al pueblo con el coche con el Yarisito y como ya he dicho yo conducía.

We began to go up to the town with the car, with the Yarisito and as I have already said I was driving.

Yo tenía cinco meses seis meses de carne de conducir por aquel entonces.

I had five months six months with my driver's license at the time.

Y entonces ¿qué significa eso? Significa que no tenía mucha experiencia conduciendo, y menos aún carreteras que eran así, un ángulo de 45 grados, muy empinada la carretera. Era muy empinada y encima era muy estrecha, no era ancha era una carretera estrecha entonces entre que era estrecha y muy empinada Llegué a una curva y me quedé ahí atascada, no pude subir.

And what does that mean? It means that I didn't have much driving experience, let alone roads that were like this, a 45 degree angle, a very steep road. It was very steep and on top of that it was very narrow, it was not wide, it was a narrow road and on top of that it was very steep.

Entonces como no conseguía arrancar el coche, se me calaba tuve que volver a bajar.

So when I came to a curve and I got stuck, I couldn't keep going up.

Y entonces buscamos otro camino y buscamos el  sitio en el que íbamos a aparcar para pasar la noche.

And since I couldn't start the car, it stalled and I had to go back down.

El tema es que llegamos al sitio y conocimos a un gato en el sitio.

The thing is, we got to the site and we met a cat on the site.

Conocimos a un gato y una de mis amigas le llamó al gato Lucifer Yo no sabía lo apropiado que iba a ser ese nombre para ese puto gato. Qué apropiado iba a ser el nombre para el puto Lucifer, de verdad.

We met a cat and one of my friends named the cat Lucifer. I didn't know how appropriate that name would be for that damn cat. How fitting the name would be for that damned Lucifer, really.

Conocimos a Lucifer, dejamos nuestro coche ahí aparcadito, comimos y nos subimos caminando a Monsanto, el pueblo más portugués, ahí encima con un montón de rocas.

We met Lucifer, we left our car parked there, we ate and we walked up to Monsanto, the most Portuguese town, up there with a lot of rocks.

Volvimos cuando ya era por la tarde al coche ¿no? A preparar la tienda de campaña para dormir etc, etc.

We went back to the car when it was already afternoon, right? To prepare the tent to sleep etc, etc.

Y oscurece. Se hace de noche y nos metemos dentro de la tienda de campaña y nos ponemos a jugar a las cartas. Pues nosotras mientras estamos jugando las cartas fuera de la tienda de campaña hay un gato que se está intentando meter en la tienda de campaña, pero obviamente no le dejamos.

And it got dark. It gets dark and we get inside the tent and start playing cards. Well, while we are playing cards, outside the tent there is a cat that is trying to get into the tent, but obviously we didn't let it.

Eso continúa cuando nos vamos a dormir, apagamos la luz y el gato no solo está así, arañando la tienda, sino que se sube y salta encima de la tienda y la tienda se hunde encima nuestro.

That continues when we go to sleep, we turn off the light and the cat is not only like this, scratching the tent, but it climbs and jumps on top of the tent and the tent collapses on top of us.

Esa noche fue bastante caótica porque teníamos a un gato dando brincos encima de nuestra tienda de campaña.

That night was quite chaotic because we had a cat jumping on top of our tent.

¿Y cómo se sujetaba el gato a la parte de arriba de la tienda de campaña? Pues clavando sus garras y haciendo agujeros en la tienda de campaña. Lucifer, el puto gato Lucifer. Qué apropiado el nombre ¿verdad? Pues sí porque sonará como bueno no pasa nada un par de agujeritos en la tienda de campaña, nadie ha salido herido, estamos bien, hemos sobrevivido la experiencia ¿verdad?

And how was the cat holding on to the top of the tent? Well, by digging its claws and making holes in the tent. Lucifer, the damn cat Lucifer. What an appropriate the name right? It was, because it might sound like everything was, nothing happened, a couple little holes in the tent, nobody was hurt, we were fine, we survived the experience, right?

Pues no, no. Porque al cuarto día del viaje llovió. Y aquí viene la segunda parte de la historia.

But no. No. Because on the fourth day of the trip it rained. And here comes the second part of the story.

Ese día había sido un día muy nublado y fuimos a acampar a un descampado ¿no?

That day had been a very cloudy day and we went camping in an open field, right?

Fuimos a dormir a un descampado, pero en cuanto llegamos una- La chica, mi amiga, la que estaba atrás. Estaba sobando, estaba durmiendo. A pierna suelta además, o sea bien profundo el sueño. Y entonces estábamos mi amiga aquí en el a siento del copiloto, y yo ¿no?

We went to sleep in an open field, but as soon as we arrived one- The girl, my friend, the one in the back. I was sleeping, she was sleeping. A lot,  a very deep sleep. So then it was my friend, here in the passenger seat, and I, right?

Así: llegando al descampado. No había nadie, no había nada. Estaba vacío, había como un cuerpo de agua, no sé si era un río, si era un lago, si era un- No sé lo que era, pero había agua al fondo y el cielo estaba encapotado, estaba lleno de nubes. Y la miré, a mi amiga y ella me miró a mí y dijimos como que como que no se sentía seguro.

And we were like this: arriving at the open field. There was no one, there was nothing. It was empty, there was like a body of water, I don't know if it was a river, if it was a lake, if it was a- I don't know what it was, but there was water at the back and the sky was overcast, it was full of clouds. And I looked at her, at my friend and she looked at me and we agreed that like it didn't feel safe.

Ese sitio no se sentía seguro y nuestro instinto nos estaba diciendo que no nos quedáramos allí. Que nos fuéramos. Entonces dijimos: no ¿verdad? Y me dijo: no.

That place didn't feel safe and our gut was telling us not to stay there. It was telling us to go, so we said: no right? And she answered me: no.

Así que buscamos un sitio cerca de la zona donde quedarnos. Seguimos nuestro instinto, animal de supervivencia y dijimos: aquí no dormimos. Así que fuimos, vimos en el mapa que había dos campings cercanos. Y uno tenía muy buenas reseñas ¿no?

So we looked for a place near the area to stay. We followed our instinct, our survival instinct and said: we won't sleep here. So we went- we saw on the map that there were two nearby campsites. And one had very good reviews, right?

Decía que los del camping eran muy majos y que había un servicio muy agradable.

He said that the people at the campsite were very nice and that the service was very pleasant.

Y encima estaba cerca, entonces dijimos: pues aquí. Vamos, estaba cerca de la playa, y fuimos. Pues hicimos eso y empezamos a hacer nuestra cena, ahí a prisa, estaba ya todo a oscuras. Era de noche estábamos con velas, intentando ver lo que cocinábamos.

And on top of that it was close, so we said: well here. Come on, it was near the beach, and we went. Well we did that and we started to make our dinner, there in a hurry, we were already in the dark. It was night and we were using candles, trying to see what we were cooking.

Y entonces empieza a chispear.

And then it starts to rain lightly.

Empieza a chispear y terminamos la cena y nos metemos en la tienda.

It starts to rain lightly so we finish dinner and head into the tent. 

Y en cuanto nos metemos en la tienda ahí estamos con nuestro saco de dormir, intentando entrar en calor, que hacía una noche fresca, y vemos que empieza a llover más fuerte ¿no? Empieza una lluvia torrencial.

And as soon as we get into the tent, there, we are with our sleeping bag, trying to get warm, it was a cool night, and we see that it starts to rain harder, right? Heavy rain.

Pues como la tienda de campaña tenía agujeros empezó a entrar el agua dentro de la tienda y nos empezamos a mojar.

Well, since the tent had holes, water began to enter the tent and we began to get soaked.

Creo que ha sido una de las peores noches de mi vida, yo la recuerdo como una de las peores noches que he dormido.

I think it has been one of the worst nights of my life, I remember it as one of the worst nights I have slept.

Qué mal dormí. Yo creo que apenas dormí esa noche. Era un- O sea el agua se acumulaba, como que la tienda tenía dos telas ¿no? La de fuera y una de dentro y se acumulaba en la de dentro ¿no?

I slept so bad. I think I barely slept that night. It was a- I mean, the water accumulated, like the tent had two canvases, right? The one on the outside and one on the inside and it accumulated in the one on the inside, right?

Y se iba hundiendo por el peso del agua y nos iba goteando encima.

And little by little it sunk due to the weight of the water that was dripping on us.

Fue una noche horrible. Yo no sé cómo llegamos a la mañana, pero a la mañana ya dejó de llover, y dimos gracias a que no habíamos dormido en aquel descampado, porque en el camping teníamos un par de arbolitos.

It was a horrible night. I don't know how we got to the morning, but in the morning it stopped raining, and we gave thanks that we didn't slept in that open field, because at the campsite we had a couple of little trees.

O sea no me quiero imaginar lo que habría sido esa tormenta a la intemperie.

I mean, I don't want to imagine what that storm would have been out in the open.

Es decir nuestro instinto fue correcto.

In other words, our instinct was correct.

Así que bueno, nos despertamos y dijimos: Bueno vamos a desayunar, vamos a secar los sacos y vamos a prepararnos y nos vamos a la playa.

So, well, we woke up and said: Okay, we're going to have breakfast, we're going to dry our bags and we're going to get ready and we're going to the beach.

Entonces metemos los sacos de dormir en el coche, enciendo el aire acondicionado, y así para que se sequen más rápido, o la calefacción, lo que fuera no me acuerdo.

So we put the sleeping bags in the car, I turn on the air conditioning, so they dry faster, or the heating, whatever I don't remember.

Creo que puse la calefacción para que saliera el aire caliente, y entonces la dejo encendida tal, nos ponemos a recoger el resto de cosas, la tienda-

I think I put the heating so that the hot air comes out, and then I leave it on like this, we start to collect the rest of the things, the tent-

Y entonces sacamos el coche y dejamos los sacos de dormir que todavía estaban mojados, en el baño. ¿No?

And then we took the car out and left the sleeping bags that were still wet, in the bathroom. Right?

A que se secaran en el baño y nos fuimos a la playa. Y en la playa pues mis amigas se pusieron a jugar con el agua, hacía frío, no se bañaron. ¿O si se bañaron? No lo sé, estaban muy locas. Así que a lo mejor si se bañaron. Pero yo no me bañé. Entonces yo me fui a dar un paseo y me encontré a un señor, que es el señor protagonista de este vídeo. Y ese señor era un señor portugués. Y nos pusimos a hablar.

To let them dry off in the bathroom, and we went to the beach. And on the beach, well, my friends started playing with the water, it was cold, they didn't bathe. Or did they? I don't know, they were very crazy. So maybe if they bathed. But I didn't bathe. So I went for a walk and I met a man, who is the protagonist of this video. And that man was a Portuguese man. And we started talking.

Estuvimos hablando como media hora. Él no hablaba español y yo no hablaba portugués, pero estuvimos hablando en la playa en la orilla, a entendernos como pudiéramos ¿no?

We were talking for about half an hour. He didn't speak Spanish and I didn't speak Portuguese, but we were talking on the beach by the shore, trying to understand each other the best we could, right?

Y me dijo que era de Lisboa, que venía a este camping en verano, de vacaciones, que estaba muy bien que siempre repetía que le encantaba...

And he told me that he was from Lisbon, that he came to this campsite in the summer, on vacation, that it was very good that he always repeated, that he loved it...

Hablamos de algo de unos agujeros y no sé de qué más. De Cristiano Ronaldo a lo mejor, de fútbol... No me acuerdo, pero hablamos de varias cosas y bueno y terminamos la conversación y nos volvimos al camping.

We talked about some holes and I don't know what else. Maybe Cristiano Ronaldo, football... I don't remember, but we talked about various things and well, we finished the conversation and we went back to the campsite.

Estamos listas para irnos, volver, continuar con nuestra aventura, volver a la carretera, enciendo el coche, meto las llaves en la ignición y no pasa nada. Lo vuelvo a intentar y tampoco pasa nada. Pues bien ¿qué había pasado?

We're ready to go, come back, continue our adventure, get back on the road, I start the car, put the keys in the ignition, and nothing happens. I try again and nothing happens. So then, what had happened?

Que esta lumbreras de aquí, brillante genia cuando había puesto a secar los sacos de dormir aquí para que se secaran con el aire acondicionado o la calefacción.

That when this bright person here, a brilliant genius put the sleeping bags out here to dry with the air conditioning or heating.

No había encendido el coche, ¿vale? No había hecho esto: 

She didn't the car, okay? I hadn't done this:

Solo hice esto, mira: hice así y ya está. Hice con el aire ¿vale? No hice esto:

I just did this, look: I did like this and that's it. I did with the air: okay? I didn't do this:

Y no encendí el coche, no lo arranque ¿vale? ¿Qué significa eso? Que coche se quedó sin batería. Efectivamente. Había vaciado por completo la batería del coche y no quedaba batería.

And I didn't start the car, I didn't start it, okay? What does that mean? That the car ran out of battery. Exactly. I had completely drained the car battery and there was no battery left.

Entonces me bajé del coche dije no sabía lo que estaba pasando pero al momento dije: Ha tenido que ser la batería, lo he fundido, la he fundido. Me he dejado el coche sin batería.

So I got out of the car and said I didn't know what was happening but after a moment I said: It has to be the battery, I've drained it, I've drained it. I have left the car without battery.

Y entonces me meto en la recepción del camping, y veo que está el señor con el que había estado hablando media hora en la playa, y le digo así como puedo, en señales que no tengo batería en mi coche, que mi coche no arranca, que si tienes unos cables de para la batería ¿no?

And so I went into the reception of the campsite, and I see that the man with whom I had been talking for half an hour on the beach is there, and I tell him as best I can, with signs that I have no battery in my car, that my car does not start. And if he had some cables for the battery, right?

Y me dice: ah "cabos de bateria!" Y entonces se pone a preguntar en recepción, en la cafetería a todo el mundo tenéis unos cables de batería unos cables para la batería.

And he tells me: ah "battery cables!" And then he starts asking at reception, in the cafeteria, to everyone: does some battery cables? Some cables for the battery?

Nadie tenía cabos pa bateria" ¿vale? Nadie tenía los putos cables. ¿Entonces qué pasó? Que salió la camarera, salió de recepción, salieron clientes... Que estaban cuatro gatos eh.

Nobody had cables for the battery, okay? Nobody had the damn cables. So what happened? The waitress came out, the receptionist came out the customers came out... We were four cats, eh.

O sea salían cuatro personas, pero salió la camarera, el cliente, la de recepción, y el portugués.

I mean it was just four people, but they all came out: the waitress, the client, the receptionist, and the Portuguese man came out.

Súper majo ¿vale? Y salieron, y entonces ¿qué hicimos?

Super kind, okay? And they came out, and what did we do?

Empujamos el coche para arrancarlo. Y se subió la camarera y el resto empujamos el coche hasta que consiguió arrancar y de ahí me dijeron: conduce, conduce, conduce hasta que se te recargue la batería, y ya ahí si quieres vete a carrefour que hay un carrefour y cómprate unos cables para la batería por si acaso.

We pushed the car to start it. And the waitress got in and the rest of us pushed the car until it managed to start and from there they told me: drive, drive, drive until your battery recharges, and then if you want go to carrefour there is a carrefour close by, go and buy yourself some cables for the battery just in case.

Y entonces eso hice. Por suerte compré los cables para la batería pero no los necesite. Pero cuál es la conclusión que yo me llevé de este camping, de este señor, y de todo.

And so I did. Luckily I bought the cables for the battery but I didn't need to use them. But what is the conclusion that I took from this campsite, from this man, and from everything.

Pues que los portugueses son unos putos majos, ¡qué majos son! No me lo puedo creer.

Well, that the Portuguese are fucking nice, they are so nice! I can not believe it.

Yo he tenido la suerte de que me he cruzado con un portugués majo. Ese portugués para mí ha cambiado mi percepción, de cómo son los portugueses y Portugal para mí, Portugal es como: I love you, ok.

I have been lucky that I have come across a nice Portuguese. That Portuguese for me has changed my perception of what the Portuguese and Portugal are like. For me, Portugal is like: I love you, ok.

Me encanta Portugal. Y ese señor tiene un gran papel, o sea espero conocer en el futuro a más portugueses iguales de majos que ese señor, y...

I love Portugal. And this gentleman has had a great role in this feeling, so I hope to meet more Portuguese in the future who are just as nice as that gentleman, and...

Porque volveré a Portugal, obviamente, con mi furgoneta. Así que nada.

Because I will return to Portugal, obviously, with my van. So yeah.

Espero conocer a muchos portugueses majos y a pocos capullos porque seguro que también habrá algún capullo. Y cuando conozca a algún capullo, espero que eso pues no... No me estropee mi percepción de los portugueses.

I hope to meet a lot of nice Portuguese people and only a few jerks because I'm sure there will be some jerks too. And when I meet some jerk, I hope it doesn't... It doesn't spoil my perception of the Portuguese.
