Alien Trees

Here are some of my sketches for new alien 'trees'. Few of them are actual trees, but the game engine categorises anything larger than a non-colliding shrub as a tree.

The biology of new planets is supposed to be quite different from what you're used to on Nauvis. There are land corals, succulents, wing-ferns, fungi, a few things based on crinoids, and a whole load of things that can't be categorised. I intend to have some more conventional things like cacti, tree ferns, and more conventional coral shapes, but I don't need to sketch those if I can use photos as the concept instead.

Each region of a landscape is a delicate balance of layers, from the ground layer, grass and flowers, bushes and shrubs, and then the tree layer. It should look cohesive enough to have a strong identity, have enough contrast to be easily readable, and have some visual interest from different colours (but not so much that it becomes a generic splattered rainbow).

These sketches are very rough because they are just the starter point for adding shapes and colours to the various landscapes. Many will get removed, replaced, recoloured, or otherwise changed as I refine the the personality of various sub-biomes.

Do you have any favourites?

(In no particular order, top 3) 1.Near the bottom, a teal/purple octo-leafed looks alternate prehistoric. 2.Just above that, the mushroom jellyfish thing looks cool. good shroom or aquatic feel. 3.And near the topleft of the middle, the purple water bowl with slightly viney melty fungi. Give a cool odd feel or swamp/damp amazon life. (And if top 5) So many interesting things to choose from for different reasons. 4. far left, slightly down, would be the pink pentagon plant 5. right wall, middle. double log plant holding water (or acid, like venus fly trap). (on the right, middle - Biasd toward the deep blue feathery plant)

Love then, they are looking indeed very alien 👾

They look fantastic! I think/in my eyes they absolutely achieve what you intend: cohesive, strong identity, readable, colourful without creating RGB vomit. Some of them even look like these fantasy "adult" "toys". Sry, I was on the internet recently XD

Yes

Are you able to have other resources drop from trees? Could one space science need to be farmed from deconstructing and replanting trees?

Joe Hickey

The coral one looks more like a stone than a tree

Andrew Romashkin

All of them! But coral looking ones are my favourites
