How to get a weighty kick using a trusted oldskool method
Added 2020-12-11 14:53:51 +0000 UTC
OK guys, something to KICK off the weekend (pun very much intended). Was mixing a song of mine, pulled this old trick out of the bag and happened to think, "Have I ever shared this method with my Patreon kru?" and I realized, no, I have not, so here we go!
This will work. And most of us have the tools needed for this.
This is an old, tried and tested method, afaik by Bob Power.
This is one from the archives.
Was mixing a track for John Summit in 2017 (we still work together).
Would love that!

No probs! These days I just duplicate my main kick track in Ableton and process that. Been thinking I should do that rack using Live's own plugins and share.

This is a really nice parallel technique. I’ll have to setup a chain in Ableton tonight and try it out. Thanks for this!

Sorry for being a total noob here but after almost pulling the trigger, I installed the trial version of Ableton to be sure and the choice is clear. I knew there was a reason I was drawn to the dark UI theme and how so many things seemed translatable when watching your tuts. I love that I can still use my REX files. Don't know what I was thinking lol. Thank you!

Thanks, man! That's what I thought (plugin == VST). I think that might be a good route for me to get up to speed with some of these VSTs then. For sure! \^^/

I just googled that quick and it does say Reason does support VSTs!
And hey, if you ever want to switch to Ableton, you know who'll offer some support ;-)

I mainly use Reason 4. I just realized that it isn't really a DAW ::facepalm:: I think I got it in like 2010, dabbled for a while and then let it sit idle. I picked it up again about 6 months ago with the intent of getting more serious. I have been re-learning anything I used to know and have been trying to figure out if I should upgrade (go with what I know) or switch to Ableton since I've been watching your tutorials. I feel like the things I know how to do would translate well. I thought if I upgraded, I would be able to use plugins like Pro-Q or Serum but now I don't think that they are available. I will do more research, but now I think I know what I need to do if I want to get serious, just hesitant to change I guess :D

Any compressor should do!
Also I feel all DAWs these days support plugins.
What DAW are you using?

Going to try this on the kick from Sesame St. Going to try with the compressor and EQ in Audacity for now. Taking note of that compressor you used tho. Do you think I can achieve similar results this way? I haven't really used any plugins yet. AFAIK my DAW doesn't support them.
