The Megaluminum Monster - Update Video

Got a quickly-made video detailing the updates and tweaks I've made to the recent Windows 98 PC build. SCSI cable extended, HDD indicator soldered in, DVD-ROM drive added, Noctua case fan connected, expansion cards rearranged to allow a little more Voodoo3 breathing room. Satisfying stuff.

And yep, this is on another channel I'm calling LGR Blerbs. Just a spot for unscripted updates and random things like this that don't merit a full video on LGR but are too large for something like Twitter.

One step closer to my Truman Show dream of a 24 hour live feed of LGR muttering to himself while phone notifications come in

How come you're using a flatscreen these days? In your older build videos it was always a nice CRT. Is it just that it's easier to lug around?

I love how flames = Guy Fieri LMAO

My main computer case has a blue power light and red HDD light! ...but since it's a "gamer" case they're shaped like lightning bolts. XD

Less a matter of security and more of convenience. Just way easier to read from an SD card than plug in an ethernet cable and bring up a network connection on another machine. I move this thing around multiple times a week so the fewer cables tying it down, the better!

Bleeerbbss!

Love the setup! Out of curiosity in regards to the front facing sd card, is it possible/worth considering a local server that hosts all the things you want on there and push it to the machine? Or would any network connectivity cause security risks? (.... Do people still write malicious code for 98?hahahaha)

More expensive cards that are often hard to find in local stores, annoying to use interface with bendable pins in card readers, and there can be irksome read/write problems on newer CF cards through IDE. Don't have any of those issues using SD 👍

LGR

Question I forgot to ask on the build video: why didn't you want to use Compact Flash?

Steve Lovelace

Yeah it's something I should've thought to do from the start. Thanks for that!

LGR

Glad to see you took my advice about the Voodoo card! :) This thing looks amazing!

Carey Brown

That does seem to be a risk with enough usage in the long term. But really, even if it might thoroughly destroying the drive someday I honestly wouldn't care too much. The old SSDs I have lying around are not being used at all otherwise, may as well give them a purpose even if it's short-lived!

LGR

Three that you *know* of ;) Happy new year to you, too!

LGR

Before you install a ssd, check how windows 98 handles a ssd as it might destroy the drive because of the amount of data it writes to the drive.

subscribed to blerbs! 3 LGR channels now! :D happy new year clint.

ogspeace

Sure does, as shown in the previous video(s) featuring this build 🙂

Seems like a pretty boss ass computer, I assume it runs everything well?
