I think the inconsistency with the best friend being welcomed in the house makes a lot of sense when A) the mom seems to act different when a friend is around and B) the best friend has no family. Kamala specifically brings up how he doesn't have a family and plays into that sad part of his life to try and go to the convention, which means the family also are fully aware of it and would naturally be more welcoming of him than any random white kid - hence why the mum made all that food for him as well.
