To me it's a Yule tree, I have a star at the top, it should be an Eagle but I can't find a satisfactory ornament that's light enough.

Canadians have Thanksgiving in October, and it's about colonising so the UK don't celebrate it - only our American friends get Thanksgiving in November!

Adventures and Naps

Awww - November is not so bad - it has the Thanksgiving holiday, although maybe that's not a thing in the UK - or in Canada? Is the famous poem "The Night before Christmas" known in the UK? It's all about the well known traditions, at least in North America. Are the reindeer names known in the UK? So many things we take for granted that maybe others do not. Best wishes!

I feel festive now 🙂 gonna put a fireplace DVD on get some whisky. We always did stockings, or rather hiking socks, and typically we'd get an orange, some chocolate coins and other bits. We've not done it since we were kids though.

Andrew

Nice,Fairy , Angel or Star for the top of the tree. Angel in this house. I always pick up a Christmas decoration from my travels,so have some from Canada and the U.S.

Graham Lavers

Lovely tree Alanna! My parents still allow my brother and I (we are both in our 30's) to decorate their tree with our awful school made ornaments. We all laugh at them each year. The best ornament is a garland my brother made with packing peanuts strung on some yarn.

The thing with ghosts at christmas or indeed any other time of the year, is they often have presence.

Sven Linton

Thanks this week's vid ..Love the tree ..I think we always have a star in top. 👍👍

Cheers for this , Alanna! It's a wee bit early for me to put mine up just yet - but over the years, we developed our own traditions and RULES about how our Christmas tree should look! We got fed up of the unpredictability of the shape of a real tree early on , so we invested in a good-quality, seven-foot artificial one and it's STILL going strong, thirty-years on! So - Rule 1: GREEN tree! NOT silver or white - it has to look natural! Then we always said you can’t have too many baubles on the tree, so we kept buying new ones, year after year - but we did reach a point where enough was enough, though! And our Second Rule was: Put as MANY different-coloured baubles on the tree as we want! Reds, greens, blues, golds, silver and sparkly whites! Mix them up - a good variety of shapes and types - spherical, droplets, arabesques and onion-shapes, boot-shapes and pine-cone shapes, as well as a few expensive-looking Harrods ornaments, like a Santa and a jack-in-the-box and a Christmas clown. Robins, too. A few, different-coloured six-sided snowflake baubles as well, and some red-and-white little artificial ‘candy canes’. All glorious and multi-coloured, like a kiddie’s Christmas - and our kids loved it! Rule 3: MOST important - and here’s where a lot of people go wrong - drape the branches afterwards with festooned GOLD tinsel only! NO MULTI-COLOURED TINSEL, please! ONLY GOLD! It looks perfect with all the coloured baubles. Finally, we always had a big star on top, though it was always heavy and needed propping-up with a horticultural green stick! Since I’ve been on my own, though, I’ve got myself a beautiful fairy topper from Lewis’s instead - and I think she looks just the job! I’ll try and put some pictures on Discord if I can.

What's your favourite christmas special?

Brett Carruthers

Definitely not a Charlie Brown Xmas tree there. We normally wait for the weekend after Thanksgiving here in the US, as is fairly traditional. Done both the fairy/angel and star as toppers. We have a tradition that when we travel we buy key fobs and other flat sparkly things to turn into ornaments. So, a bicycle and windmill from Amsterdam. A tower Bridge and Westminster from London, etc. This on top of the somewhat random collection of ornaments amassed over the years. We used to do a live tree, but switched to a pre-lit fake one a few years back. Just way less trouble. One tradition that we can't miss here will be the lights in McAdenville. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fgqj8RLbN5k They've been doing it every year for decades. So, a Very Merry Pre-Christmas to you and "The butler".

Bob Flynn

My parents died either side of Christmas so it is always a time of reflection for me and my siblings. Usually we all get together at my sister's house in Buxton but who knows this year. That is what i will be missing, family. My daughter has threatened to put a tree up next weekend which is about a month early!

Enjoy the upcoming festive season :). Fairy or star on the top? - Personally, I am a star person but I know a lot people who prefer fairies... Maybe an interesting video idea: Christmas differences between Canada/North America and the UK. - Also, I am slightly jealous, you were able to (pre-)order a PS5. Here in Austria they were all gone within literally a few seconds...

Martin Dobler

Great video Alanna, thanks. I think the only way this could've been more festive is if you were drinking Mulled Wine or Hot Spiced Cider, But we all know where the video would have gone if that were the case... 😂

Woooooooooo!!!!!!!!

Cheers pal!

I usually join up with the rest of the family at my Niece's (the only house that's big enough for us all!) so I only have a very old two foot tall tree with very dodgy lights back at home. Covid will probably put paid to any grand get-together this year so an upgrade is called for I reckon...maybe even stretch to 3 foot tall with some new lights. That stocking of yours looks very smart btw!

Malcolm Lawrence

Meanwhile, Alanna has ticked over 10M views on youtube: congratulations Alanna.

Happy pre-Christmas to you too! I'm not really one for decorations, so I usually just make do with a selection bag of mini babybels - after all Christmas is all about the baby cheeses.

Dr Philip J Naylor

Here in wonderful Dagenham some people have had their lights up for the past couple of weeks, I'm waiting until December just to give me something to look forward to during lockdown. As I come from a non religious family we always had a fairy on top of the tree, visitors were welcome to think it was an Angel if they wanted to.

Arthur Gatward

We've had our fake Christmas tree for so many years. Fairy or star on the top? we've had both. The star is a bit heavy so keeping it from drooping isn't easy. You do need to get some tinsel though!. When our kids were young we also did the stocking thing, just like you describe, to keep them occupied until we got up 😀 I was a teenager when my dad died. He passed away in the November, so that first Christmas I think I was still feeling pretty numb. You never forget obviously but life does move on and new people come into your life, It's good you have your partner with you this Christmas - I guess at one point this awful year you couldn't have been sure that would be the case! So I now have to go and tidy the garage today to locate all our Christmas decorations from the choas that's in there- that's going to be fun! Take care!

Stuart Summers

Hi Alanna. Think a lot of people will be doing their decorations early this year. Christmas decoration collection - In the good old days long long ago I'd take the train into the big smoke (London) in December and visit the big department stores like you mentioned Harrods & Harvey Nichols, Liberty, Selfridges just to soak up the atmosphere in their Christmas departments which was so over the top. Buy a few special ornaments (expensive) each year as they were so different to the ones could get locally. Took a few years before had a tree full. We had both angel and a star to choose from.

Ian

A possible Spooky Ding Dong Ditch and the gift of a tape measure basically sums up 2020. Great idea to start the Holiday Season early. Thanks for this Christmas A&N episode...🎁

Bailey 😭 I love him!

Adventures and Naps

Those lights are crazy!! We used to drive around town to look at Christmas lights and there's always a few streets that go bigger than other streets lol

David

My mum has to make sure that we have extra baubles because Bailey always takes them off the tree and starts playing with them because he thinks they're balls😂 When we catch him near the tree he hides under it and pretends that he's sleeping! Hope you have a lovely weekend!

Aaron Conway

Any other year, to anyone who’s already put up their decorations, I’d be like, “wtf it’s November!” But 2020 just needs to be over now, so bring on Christmas! Lol... I don’t get too involved in decorating, it’s usually the day of a million arguments, so I tend to sit as far away as possible & sort out the lights 😂 We have an angel on ours, I’d prefer a star, but that’d start another argument, so... Hope you’re doing okay 🙂
