October Book Club Review!

Guess what - I didn't finish this months book! I just, couldn't!

The Girl With All the Gifts by the same author was a wonderful surprise. I really enjoyed it and read it only in a few days this summer. The "Big Twist" was interesting and really played a big role on the whole book.

Then this month, I tried The Boy on the Bridge. While technically it is not a sequel, a lot of people recommend reading The Girl before starting in on The Boy.

But I found that the "Big Twist" in The Girl was re-used in The Boy! But we already know it! And most of the entire book The Girl talks about it! So by the time I got around to The Boy, I wasn't that interested!

I think if I spent longer between each book, I probably would have finished The Boy and enjoyed it more. But it felt too similar and too repetitive to The Girl so I put it down and couldn't pick it back up again.

Did anyone read it this month?? I would love to know what you thought!

Hi it's Beverley here. I haven't read anything else by this author I was previously a Patricia Cornwell fan. So I thought, here we go, another post_apocolyptic melodrama, but I thought it was well written with engaging characters. Some technical\scientific details were vague or unlikely to work in practice. I thought the ending had a good twist, but the epilogue, really made you think about how 2 warring factions can make a difference to the future of humanity.

I think Fellside is worth a look, I agree with Malcolm's take on it

Will

Fellside is at its best with the ghost/spirit parts of the book but I found it gets a little bogged down with details of life in the prison where its set. I'd give it a 7/10.

Malcolm Lawrence

I agree! I think I have Fellside on my To-Read list - Was it worth the read?

You're totally right. Good point about skipping to the end, didn't think of that!

Adventures and Naps

The bar was set high with The Girl With all the Gifts and so my expectations for the next book (as you say, not quite a sequel) were right up there. Ultimately it never quite made it because it didn't 'move on' enough which was a shame. Incidentally, I didn't give up with M R Carey and read "Fellside" next, which is a complete departure from dealing with the Hungries.

Malcolm Lawrence

I agree, it felt like you know exactly where they're going to end up and where the story is going to end. Maybe skip to the epilogue though, it's kinda interesting.
