My band, the JER band is playing a weekend of shows in SoCal in December!!! These are our last 3 shows of the year, as well as my first west coast shows in about 2 years!
We announced a few weeks back that we are playing NO EARBUDS FEST, a dope festival showcasing amazing underground bands from across the alternative music sphere. I am particularly stoked to share the stage with these bands! I first saw Prince Daddy & The Hyena over 10 years ago on one of their first tours. Their energy is raw, and they're awesome people! I've wanted to play a show with them for the longest time! And i'm learning about so many amazing new bands, like Yungatita (who I cant stop listening to)! We wanted to add NorCal onto these, but we have fill in musicians who are local to socal and unable to stretch it up there! As I always say, touring is real expensive. HELLO PATREON! it's been a bit, so here's a little update post!
I wanna start out by saying, HELLO TO ALL THE NEW PATRONS!!! THERE'S SO MANY OF YOU THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE! I think we're at over 60 new patrons this week?! Y'ALL ROCK MY SOCKS!
The support here is the only reason I am able to create art at the capacity that I do. Thank you so much for everyone who's supporting. I haven't been active here a ton over the last month or so because I have been touring with the JER band, and life just calmed down back to normal. So I want to address first that i will be updating all the perks! The next youtube video will have an updated outro including everybodys names. This week, i'll be updating the google drive that has wav files of all my covers to date, and for those who wish to join the discord, I will be posting an updated invite link to the discord, and for those who have songs you'd love to hear as ska, I will be posting an updated link to the patreon request form.
Patreon is supposed to automatically send those perks, but over the years, it's simply never worked every time i've set it up lol so I have to manually post it. Which is FINE! as long as everybody is getting the perks!
NOW BACK TO ME BEING BACK! bare with me, I am adjust back to life. I have been gone since september 12th and I travelled nearly 4000 miles by van over 14 days, with 11 of them being days we played a show with 0 days off. Then we had one day to do laundry and pack and fly out to Japan for the JER shows. We landed a week ago and immediately had to prep not only for the JER fest show, but the skatune network Fest show AND playing on the Link 80 and Jeff Rosenstock sets.
NOW IF YOU'VE BEEN FOLLOWING... you know I did NOT have the smoothest time. Starting with our last tour. Touring is integral to being a musician in this day, but it's also incredibly volatile. Especially when you're the opening band. You're throwin in the worst position. You're paid the least, with our daily performance fee barely covering the cost of our van rental and gas. You also open the show, and many people actively show up late and avoid the opening band, which directly effects our merch sales and can be the difference between us affording to do the tour and not. AND TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, I was hit with a several thousand dollar financial situation that was out of my control, and has thrown me in the red. pair that with United fucking up our flight to japan where we had to rebook our bullet train and book hotels out of pocket... it's been stressful financially. This was why some of our merch has been delayed AND we had to cancel shows.
I say all this as a level of not only transparency on how financially volatile all of this is, but how integral this support is. Patreon is supposed to cover my rent and living expenses so I can focus solely on creating, but lately it's been supplementing a lot of tour costs and covering unexpected finances. I may need to take my car into a shop with my next patreon payout, and Im hoping I have enough to pay rent.
And On top of patreon, I have several jobs that I work. I teach marching band with multiple schools, as well as 2 independent drum corps. I also do freelance private lessons, session work, recording work, touring, and stuff. So imagine balancing rehearsals through the week on top of all the work that goes into touring that they dont tell you about like ORGANIZING BOXES OF MERCH, doing LOADS of laundry and cleaning your home when you get home, loading and unloading a van / all the gear, its a huge adjustment going from being home to on the road and home again. On top of fighting the jet lag going from Japan to Florida lol
My goal is by the start of next week to be back in a recording flow and bringing y'all some more videos and content! To everyone who has been here supporting, thank you so much. To everyone who is new here, THANK YOU SO MUCH! This wouldn't be possible without y'all!

Someone left a comment saying "im surprised you haven't done this one yet" which it's def one of those covers i've thought about every year, but never got around to doing haha. I took inspiration from my boy lollipop by Millie Small, and that traditional jamaican ska sound just fits so perfectly!

Some of the little things that never get talked about is stuff like all the time that goes into editing these videos! Dragon Roost Island (Legend of Zelda Wind Waker) SKA COVER
THE RE-RECORDING THAT IS SOOOOOOO LONG OVERDUE! I recorded a cover of this tune like, 7 or 8 years ago! I have lived sooooo many lifetimes since then LOL but I was never super stoked with how that one came out, and knew I could do wayyy better! AND SO I DID!
SO HERE'S THE RE-IMAGINING OF DRAGON ROOST ISLAND AS SKA! A slept on banger, and classic imho of not only the legend of zelda soundtrack, but video game music in general. One of those types of tracks that everyone definitely loves and it gets it's flowers, but it also deserves the whole garden. But maybe i'm just nostalgic beause this was the first game I got with the gamecube
As you can see, this is a more involved cover. Opening with a brass quintet, followed by a multi-meter ska-punk section and then a TSPO-esque trumpet cover, and ending with a jazz outro. I love creating these types of musical journeys through my arrangements, and even though they take more time, i think they payoff is well worth it!
Full transparency, it's getting harder and harder to keep videos like these up! I have a lot of ambitions, goals, and plans for the channel, but the support is dwindling and I've had to take on more and more external work, leaving little room to increase what I am doing here! I know the world is on fire and the economy is ass, so I always wanna end these with a serious appreciation for those who are here supporting! Some are new, many are very old! This video, as you can see, was a full on production. As someone who normally makes a ton of videos by themself in their room, it was so cool to be able to go to different locations, and have help not only from friends but camera people too!
I did edit ALL of the video myself (except the opening sequence) and it took quite a long time to do it all, which is a big reason why the uploads haven't been frequent (pair that with the fact that I spent 6 weeks out of my summer not at home)
The record dropped 10 days ago now, and is streaming everywhere you stream music! I have a lot of bonus content from demos to recordings from the studio. I want to make lots of stuff around this record too, from clips live / from tour to whatever else I can think of! All the support here helps me do the thing, so thank you for the continued support, y'all!

Capitalism Breeds Devastation (Official Video)
MUSIC VIDEO FOR THE SECOND SINGLE OFF OF THE RECORD!
This is one of the earlier tracks I wrote for the record. I was noodling on guitar while in the studio for another band, and came up with the verses of this tune. At the time, I was hooked on the specials, listening to them a TON! I was really obsessed with the energy of that LP, and was thinking about how barely any bands have truly captured that energy, and that really drove the record into the direction it took.
Lyrically, it also ties in well with themes from the 2-tone movement (you can watch the lyric video on the skatune network youtube) Something else that really moved me about the specials was the way they conveyed working class ideals. Ghost town's a song about once thriving towns running dry when the economy goes south. Instead of investing in infrastructure and the people of the towns producing the value, the towns were rang dry by the capitalists who ran the industries, leaving the towns as ghost towns.
This song really leans into the new tone idea, which is less about the sound of the song (in spite of what people think), and more about the attitude. Bringing the 2-tone ideas to modern day. While ska formed and translated to the UK, the states was going through the civil rights movement, and bringing us many civil rights leaders. Activists across the world were going through their development during this time.
Now, in 2025, we have a TON of text and recourses from these activists talking about the root causes of these political instabilities the 2-tone bands were singing of. Addressing capitalism and white supremacy at its root. Embracing intersectionality and how other marginalized groups like Queer and trans folk fit into the system we are trying to dismantle... acknowledging all of that WHILE living a life of love and celebration... now THAT is New Tone. Revolution is building up more than it is tearing down. I hope that this song and record can help convey that energy!
ANYWAY! I hope y'all enjoy this video! It was so fun, and tried to pay an homage to the 2-tone era of the genre!

I wanted to give an update on where I’m at and what’s happening! I basically haven’t been home since may lol
I’m sure you all have seen the JER band is announcing a bunch of shows and new record stuff! I’m organizing all of this while on the road 😵💫 I teach marching band and drum corps between all the touring I do around the summer and fall, so I’m editing videos for hours after teaching in the sun for 8+ hours lol
So sorry if I haven’t been as active! I have a few covers I will be uploading over the summer, as well as new original JER music!

WHY IS THIS TRACK SUCH A BANGER! I always had this in the faintest corners of my memory. Born in 95, Doug was just ending syndication when I was starting to watch tv more as a kid.
It wasn’t until way later when Brent (my friend / booking agent) said it would be a banger, so it stuck out when I saw it a few times in the Patreon request folder. The fact that the fictional band the beets is obviously a parody on the Beatles, it made it work well with the British vibe to adopt it into a 2-tone vibe!

Pokemon Red & Blue (Title Track) SKA COVER
POKEMON HEP AND RUDE!!!
YEARS AGO, I covered this one and i really loved the arrangement, but I definitely did not have the chops as a producer to pull it off exactly how I visioned it.
The opening starts out with this ska-punk riff, but quickly shifts into a homage to the skatalites. The record hi-bop ska in particular. The drums are as close to a Lloyd Knibb trad ska style, with the bass being directly inspired by many basslines found on that record, the authentic Jamaica ska style just fits this tune perfectly
If you've been around for a while (or simply dug deep to my earlier covers) then you'll probably remember this one from over 6 years ago! Maybe you saw the skatune network live band perform it once or twice at magfest or PAX! I re-recorded this one hopefully to get it (and maybe many other video game covers) onto streaming! I havent uploaded a cover onto streaming for a while now, since 2023! Partially because it cost a lot of money. Hopefully with the addition to y'all, we can reach a higher level where I can return to uploading covers to streaming!

This one has been requested quite a bit! Especially back in 2020, when I was doing the cartoon network cover record, I meant to do this one, but also glad i've held off because I've grown so much over that time! This show was one of my favorites when i was REALLY YOUNG (it stopped airing when i was like 5 lol) SO it's cool to finally bring this one to light

I finally have the chops to pull this one off lmao, something that comes with these video game songs is the fact that they are MUCH harder than they seem. The melody line is SUCH a large range, and I first tried to cover this I wanna say... in 2020? I could barely pull it off with every horn. The Trumpet part in particular goes HIGH as HELL!
BUT i've been getting better at trumpet (and every instrument in general) SO I feel so accomplished finally pulling off this CLASSIC! Big thank you to everyone who's requested this and been patient! hahaha, this was requested on patreon quite a few times. I actually covered this one years ago, but it's one of the few covers that's no longer up on my channel, SO i decided to finally tackle it over 6 years later!
This song is so nostalgic for me, I didn't really grow up listening to rock or anything like that. I had a friend of mine who introduced me to some bands and while I never got TOO into the Foo Fighters, this was a song he would play on his ipod on the bus in middle school hahaha I think it translates well as ska!
