Background tutorial - forest pasture

Hello and happy monday! Hope you have had an amazing weekend ❤️

Today I want to provide you with a background tutorial, more specific a pasture background.

Hope you find it helpful!

Step 1: Start with blocking in the base colors. Don't mind how messy it looks, the messiness will gradually disappear as you go!
PS: keep in mind to make separate layers for each new thing you put down, to make it easier to work with later. For example the sky in one layer, the trees in the back in one, the grass in the back in one, the grass further to "the camera" in one and so on.

Don't get overwhelmed with how "detailed" or "complicated" the base looks, cause I have only used regular round brushes, both soft and hard, but also the "more detailed pine tree" in my summer brush pack, but nothing else!

Step 2: break it down layer by layer so you don't get overwhelmed by all the stuff going on on the canvas. We're starting with the trees the furthest back. The mountains doesn't need any more attention since they're so far away that you don't need details. Add more depth and color by starting off with a regular round brush on 50% opacity and blend together the colors afterwards.

Step 3: If you want to you can add slightly details with using the "more detailed pine tree" brush over the tree tops, but this is not necessary.

Step 4: move on to the next layer, the trees in front of these again, add more contrast, depth and color. Again, I have only used one brush for these trees, the same as mentioned above. I have used several different colors to create depth.

Step 5: repeat step 4 on the next tree layer.

Step 6: create simple shadows and the grass area furthest back. Don't worry about details here since it's so far away.

Step 7: repeat with the grass on the next layer

Step 8: on this layer you can start adding a bit of details. Here also I have only used grass brushes from my summer pack. I have used several different grass brushes to make it more realistic.
Brushes used: "grass base (or distant grass)", "grass details", "grass" and "clover". Just splatter them randomly around.

Step 9: Repeat step 6, 7 and 8 on the grass layer in the front, but here you add even more details.

Step 10: add some foliage/shrubs in front of the trees in the front, to make a more natural transition from the grass to the trees.
I have used the "tree base", "tree build-up", "thuja bush" and "tree texture" to create the shrubs. I have also added shadow on the bottom and highlights on the tops of the shrubs.

Step 11: I'm horrible at adding details to pine trees, so therefore I have done it very simple with going over the trees with the "pine tree needles" brush with several different colors from the summer pack + shaded and highlighted slightly with the burn and dodge tool, and it kind of works.

Step 12: adding clouds to the sky. Here again I chose to work smarter and not harder and just used my cloud stamps and brushes from the summer pack!

Step 13 (optional): if you're one like me who likes to gradually blur your backgrounds, then you can do this step too. Layer by layer I'm blurring, starting with the sky and mountains with the most blur, and then I blur less and less the further to the front I come. Choose the blur % how you like it, but I started off with 5% furthest back.

And that completes all the steps!

Feel free to ask away if you have any questions!

I have included the final result in the attachments, if you want to use it for your artwork. Feel free to add/change anything you want to make it fit your style!

Easy/quick reins tutorial

Hello everyone, I hope you're having a great Monday!

Here comes a quit easy and quick tutorial on how i make my everyday reins for my art.

1. Base
I first draw with a hard brush the base i want the reins to be in. I many times do them in sections as it can be easier to shade them then. Use a color that is the same or simillar to your tack. If it is black take a dark grey and not black as the base.

2. Harsh shadow
I then take a darker shade of the base with the hard brush and kind of follows the shape where the natural shadow would be. Reins are in most cases square shaped, so i either don't blend this or just slightly blend it to make the edge not as sharp looking (here i did not do it) Sometimes i change the opacity slightly if i think it looks too dark. Here i decided not to.

It might be hard, but don't think too much when you draw this line to get a more natural flow of it. Reins can be anything from a bit hard to more soft, so they can live their own life a bit when it comes to how they natural falls.

3. Shadow and highlight details
I then draw a few lines or dots that a smudge out to get some contrast and depth in the reins depending how the harsh shadow turned out. Where could it maybe be a "wave" in the reins flow and not.

4. Buckle attachment
Here is a more close up how i do where the attachment to the buckle is. I draw the harsh shadow a bit bigger here and removes a bit of it at the bottom so it looks like the metal of the buckle is going in between.

5. Rein buckle
You can do this in so many different ways as there are so many options for this nowadays, but i usually does the standard old school looking rein buckle.
I first draw the base in the same color as the metal of the bridle. I then does a quick shading with a darker shade and then a lighter of the metal color to add shadow and highlight to the buckle. Super quick.

6. Reins...end...start?
Hahah i hope you get what i mean. But i add this underneath the rein buckle and do the exact same procedure as with the reins; base color with the hard brush, harsh shadow, then the shadow and highlight details

7. Holes in the reins
Underneath the buckle do i add some black dots in a row with a tiny bit white/light color as a highlight detail on the side of the black dots. I then slight smudge it.

8. Finishing touches
I then add some more shadows around where the reins is going under and between the hand, and then add a leather texture over the reins - Done!

Don't forget the other side if the reins is hanging so it should be visible on the opposite side. I to be honest just usually duplicate the reins i already did and just puts them on a layer that's underneath the horse. Think smarter not harder ✌️

That's basically just it. This is just my standard and quick way. Sometimes i do this more in depth and adds more details, but most of the time it is just like this.

I hope you found this interesting!

Free item - 3/4 view saddle pads

Hello everyone, hope you have had a great weekend 🫶🏻

Sooooo this is me, forgetting that I was supposed to post the running martingales today and made the saddle pads in stead, sorry! You'll get the martingales in two weeks 🫢

Anyways, I have made two different saddle pads in 3/4 view; one western styled pad and one show jumping pad. But ofc you can use it for whatever style you want!

All the pads come in 8 different color swatches + one black leather and one brown leather, so really a total of 32 different pads! You're as usual allowed to tweak and recolor if you want to!

Also since we know it can be hard to find specific items you need here on patreon, we have decided to make it easier to find different viewed items, so this post will both be placed in the "Saddle pads" collection, but also in the new "3/4 view items" collection. We will try to create new collections for each view, and sort old post in there as well, hope this helps!

Free item - Lunging and long-reining set

Hello everyone! I hope you have a good day.

Something that has been long on our to do list - a lunging and long-reining set in one!

This is quite the set with not only the surcingle, but with three more things + a brush!

The surcingle/girth comes in the base colors and metals. It is a lunging and long-reining girth in one depending on what you want to do.

The elastic/resistance bands attached to the saddle pad is a core training equipment.
It can be used both during lunging, long-reining and riding! If you want to search on it look up "Equiband". The pad comes in both black and white.

A long whip that you can just paint in the end in the shape you want it to be. Comes in our base colors and base metal colors. Can also be used as normal dressage whip.

Instead of providing with finished lunging lines, did i choose to just make the start of the lines. Like that can you decide yourself on the shape. But also use it for lead ropes etc!
I also added a texture brush if you want the whole line to be of the same texture. You will have to rotate and warp it to make it fit the best.

As always are you free to recolor, tweak, warp etc to make it fit your work the absolute best.

I hope you'll like it!

Patreon changes

Hello everyone!

Remember we mentioned that some things would change in 2024? Well, here comes a list of what! And don't worry, it's nothing drastic!

MONTHLY MYSTERY BOX

The monthly mystery box is mostly just that now, a mystery box. Even if you are still able to join it as a challenge we first advertised it as, do we understand that the majority won't be able to join it every month.  Nothing will however change with the box itself, only the text on the tier and in the text in the post will change a bit. In other words, it will only be a box with mystery items, most likely a theme in each box, but we will not make it a challenge. If you want to make it a challenge, then you are of course free to!

THE TIERS

We have done some slight changes to many of the tiers, but nothing huge and nothing you in general will notice, but:
- We have changed the free edit request to one free yearly horse portrait (with simple background) instead in the gold tier. This because neither of us really edit much anymore on a general basis, so it ends up with 90% drawing anyways.
Both this new addition + the annual commission that has always been on the gold tier, will be printed and sent out to the patron who ordered it.
- We have also added one free annual horse design/offspring to each patron that's a part of the bronze, silver or gold tier. This will replace the previously advent/christmas batches we have done in the past

Please keep in mind that all free annual requests is your responsibility as a patron to request, so if you would want to place your annual order, please contact us!

THE ESTATE

Yes, we know, we know, we have totally abandoned the whole thing and we are truly sorry for that! But to be fair did we realize afterwards that it was a bit too much work for us to have two separate, different estates (one sso inspired free to use for the public + one made from scratch for the patrons).
The plan now is to remake it and instead work on just one estate together. This new estate will be one only patrons can use, both if you just want backgrounds (for example you and your horse travel to a stable to train in your rp), but you can also board there if you want to.
We will however not push it as a boarding stable at all, just to not feel overwhelmed into making a lot of backgrounds in a short amount of time. So backgrounds will be coming out from time to time. The old estate backgrounds will still be up, just not as the NorthStar estate backgrounds.
The estate will be available for bronze, silver and gold patrons.
This means we will eventually delete the estate discord, since we all will be gathered in the normal patreon discord. But some changes will happen there too in regards of the new estate, maybe you have already spotted something? 👀

COMMISSIONS

Some changes will also happen with the commissions, but since that's a whole topic by itself, we will post that info in a separate post!

If you have any questions regarding these changes, don't hesitate to ask us!
