Dancing

Undoubtedly, there is something freeing about dancing like no one is watching.

In this case, however, you are watching!

Here, a short movie of dancing. Rainy day, sunset, bare feet on wet grass, funky, soul felt dancing. Making up my own steps, and my own beats.

Happy Saturday!

Two Ways

juxtapose: place or deal with close together for contrasting effect.

It's often said that there's more than one way to achieve a thing. Here, I've compiled two juxtaposed pieces of footage of a similar act to very different end results! One perhaps defined as glamour and the other inelegance. Both in good fun!

This is "Two Ways".

Today's Drawing

This is today's drawing, recorded in real time.

In an effort to capture the bubble gum pop mood, I set it to music that felt in keeping...

As I chewed my watermelon bubble gum, I was blowing bubbles. I captured those bubbles in my drawing!

You may also notice some serious blinking as I clear my eyes of the smoke from my incense.....

Selfie in Three Parts

Happy Friday! Back in my overalls today and chewing bubble gum. There’s something very 1980s about that combo!

A haiku:

Chewing bubble gum

Tastes of a watermelon,

Or summers of youth.

Le Freak

A special re-edit for my Patrons! This is "Le Freak". Named so for the music it is set to.

Freak out. Or, not. But I do hope you enjoy this special edit!

I cannot emphasize how sticky hot the weather is....

Wednesday Walk

A Wednesday walk on a beautiful afternoon!

Through tall trees along a winding path I walk in the name of equality. I've seen countless joggers and walkers topless lately, but none of them were women. There's a long way to go before women are not shamed or even prosecuted for walking like this on a hot day.

I set this to some hopeful music, and played with the light and color in the editing process.

For a little variety in today’s drawing, I put my hair up. It’s all bound together in a ponytail right on top of my head!

I’ve been enjoying the benefits of daily stretching/yoga.

Today’s haiku:

I stretch it all out.

From stiff neck to cramping feet.

Then I feel better.

Tuesday Update

Yay! It feels enough like autumn that I put on my overalls for the first time in months and months! I always get a little excited at the prospect of fall, even though the weather here is still consistently hot.

Anyway, here's what I've been up to the past week!

Five Minute Rant

I love being an artist. There's freedom in the creativity, and I enjoy using a wide variety of mediums to convey my vision.

There are, however, aspects that are really difficult. After several days of struggle, and a difficult task behind me,  I really needed to let off some steam. This is over five continuous minutes of a rambling rant.

Thank you for listening, and thank you for being here.

A sigh of relief,

The task is finally done.

Now to the next task.

Fok Julle Naaiers

A behind the scenes look at creating a work of art.

This is "Fok Julle Naaiers". Named so because of the song used by Die Antwoord.

It lends to the mood. But the work at hand is all about re-creating a Zagnut wrapper. A delicious candy. With an incredible font, style, and color scheme!

Dali in the Wild

If you should spot a dali in the wild, do not approach! They may be curious and approach you and you'll probably be fine. But no sudden movements!

In this fun performative piece, I play with my props. This time a Dali mask and head to toe black clothing. I think this piece really plays with context and perspective, plus it was fun to make.

Rage against the dying of the light.

This poem is "Do not go gently into that good night" by Dylan Thomas. It is about not succumbing to death even though it is ultimately inevitable.

I've been thinking about this poem recently, but more in a sense of  not giving up on life, hopes, dreams, and ambitions.  It seemed appropriate to be dressed as my version of a warrior for this short movie.

Today's Drawing

Today's drawing features some of my favorite pieces of jewelry. My handmade leather "Coyote" necklace and my face chain. I'm sure there's a more elegant name for the face jewelry, but I'm not sure what else to call it.  I feel appropriately suited up for productivity when I wear them.

This drawing is set to slightly moody music, and the smoke trails of my incense are visible in the reflection of my mirror.

Selfie in Three Parts

Today's selfie in three parts is inspired by Coyote, my altar ego that appears in my art. She's a wild woman, full of ancient wisdom. She is the part of myself that has protected me in difficult times, and encouraged me forward. Coyote is a representation of my higher self. The inner voice that refuses to give up.

A haiku:

Inner voice calls out,

"Warrior, come out and play!"

It's time to make change.

Wednesday Walk

It's a beautiful day and beautiful weather, the perfect time for a Wednesday Walk! This is called, "Leather Britches".

Not because I'm wearing leather britches (I'm not), but because that is the name of the fantastic song that my walk is set to!

In Progress

Much tediousness goes into a background like this. I hope that the difference is visible. I’ve been staring at it so long, I’m not sure I can see the difference!

The first photo is where I started today. The second is where I currently am.

Tuesday Update!

Happy Taco Tuesday! I am thrilled with all the new Patrons this week! It feels me with gratitude and inspires me. Thank you so much for being here.

This is everything that's going on with me this week, plus some bonus footage of a spider that was hanging out where I was planning on standing to film this! Luckily, I spotted her before setting up.

I hope you're off to a great week.

Making My Own Waves

I am a bit intimidated by the ocean,  so I have never imagined that I would be a surfer. But, I was so impressed the first time I saw someone surf skating. I was so impressed with the grace and beauty of the motions!

It is a sport that is often used by surfers to maintain skills and practice during the off season.

Over the past few months, I've made some real improvement with surf skating. I'd never so much as set a foot on an actual skateboard, so I wasn't sure I'd be able to learn this at all. I haven't had this much fun since I learned to ride a bicycle!

I've also learned a few tricks about filming this. I'm pleased to be making my own waves where I'm comfortable: on land. And I'm thrilled to be able to capture my progress and share it with you!

The Horse That Had a Flat Tire

A poetry reading. This is The Horse With a Flat Tire, by Richard Brautigan.

I still dream of writing poetry, like really good poetry. I will keep practicing and continuing to read stuff like this! Which in turn, gives me the opportunity to record and edit in new and interesting ways.

Out of context images

This image was created for a specific purpose.  It was meant to promote a movie that I had made about a seemingly magic toy that can let you look into other worlds and a hero that could travel to them.  The parallels that danced in my mind between Buckaroo Banzai and the View Master didn't enchant as many people as I had hoped, and it remains one of my least viewed videos.  This image, and its haunting quality is a side effect of another project and may have ended up being better than what inspired it.

Today's Drawing

Picasso said: Inspiration exists, but it must find you working. It's been stuck in my head often lately, and I try to hold those words of wisdom in my heart and mind.

It's important for me to create daily. So in addition to my self portrait drawing (completed today in charcoal pencil), I used myself as a canvas for Picasso's inspiring advice!

Happy Friday! We’re heading into a holiday weekend here in the states! It’s Labor Day Weekend. If you’re celebrating your labors, I hope you have a happy and safe weekend! If not, I wish you a great weekend anyway.

A haiku to accompany today’s photos of a drawing and instant photo:

For inspiration,

I hold those words in my mind.

No idleness here.

Work in Progress

I'm returning to a piece that I'd previously started. While the majority of the work is done, it never has been quite "finished".

My large self portraits, such as this one, often include an elaborate background. It is often the background, or the landscape portion of these works that requires a lot of work. Such is the case here. While the figure is complete, I want to make sure that it exists in a plain that looks convincing.

For this piece, the convincing part includes a lot of attention to detail. All those petals not only need to be individually painted, but also cast an appropriate shadow. Plus, there's an added element of foreshortening to create depth of field.

It's a beast of a painting, but will be worth another round (or two) of layers of sheer paint!

Tuesday Update!

It's been an interesting week. Let me tell you all about it!

I'll share why the feed has looked a bit different of late. There's a root cause for that.

Also, I'm really grateful for all of you! It's such a privilege to be an artist that you've chosen to support. Thank you!

Golden Hour

The Golden Hour is perfect for photography and film. Whether it's morning or evening, the light is magical, beautiful, and golden (thus the name).

I wanted to take advantage of the evening golden hour with this short movie. Just playing in the light, taking advantage of the golden glow it gives my hair. The way the sun beams dance, and the translucent fabric of my dress contrasting with the silhouettes of form.

Of Water and Light

There are days, especially this time of year, when it is simply too hot to enjoy a walk. My problem is that I always miss the sunshine and outdoors, regardless of how high the temperature.

My alternative, or compromise, is finding relief from the water.

In this case, the water as it was filmed in the sunshine of the golden hour, took on the very essence of light itself.
