Sketchbook #52

Some stuff I've been scratching away at recently! The Miku is a redraw of an older piece of mine - there's been some interest in making a wallpaper version, so I thought I might as well freshen it up while I'm at it! It's sort of on the backburner for now, so I'm not sure when it will be finished, but if you'd like me to prioritize it I'll be adding it to next month's poll.

Sorry for the watermarks on the final pic! These are for work, so I have to be a little more careful, but I wanted to give a quick peek! I'm really excited about them and I can't wait to show you all the final product!!!

March Coloring Sheet

Sorry for the delay on this one! A pipe burst and flooded part of our apartment earlier this month, so that had my full attention for a bit there haha! Anyway, I'm glad I could get this posted in time, and I hope you enjoy it!

"Minerva" Process

While I didn't extensively document this one as I went, I thought I'd post what I have since it's been a while since I put one of these together!

This was an illustration that I made for Procyon Gaming for one of their play mats.

If you have questions along the way (about brushes, my coloring methods, etc), you might be able to find answers by clicking through the drawing guide masterpost. If you still aren't sure about something, though, feel free to leave a comment at the end!

1) Thumbnails! I honestly cannot remember the last time I had to work with a horizontal canvas, so this one was super tricky for me lol... The first thumbnail was a suggestion by the company, the second was a low angle to accentuate the feeling of the character being a powerful entity, and the third is a more standard "show off the character" sort of image.

2) In the end, we decided that the third, while simple, was the most effective for this specific kind of merchandise.

3) From there, I got to work on a cleaner sketch - to do this, I lowered the opacity of the thumbnail and sketched directly over it on a new layer just to keep things more or less in place. I wound up implementing a few changes: her expression became a bit softer, the hand holding the staff became looser, and the hand holding the shield is reaching out to the viewer. In general, it became a more inviting image.

4) I got to work on lineart (in Sai, as always). I wound up following the sketch pretty closely, but I did change the shield hand a bit - this hand gave me so much trouble!! It's kind of a hard angle to pull off well. In the end I took a picture of my own hand as reference and then struggled with that hahah

5) Flats! As usual, I switch to Clip Studio from this point onward. I wanted this image to be bright and airy, so no dramatic lighting or limited color schemes. It's fairly straightforward. Since the main colors on the character are red and yellow, I figured I might as well go for a classic RGB color scheme - the red ended up popping really well against a blue/green background! The sky also keeps the image feeling light. I didn't want the background to bog things down or take attention away from the character.

You can also see where I started trying out ways to handle the pink trim details, but I ended up going a different route.

6) Kind of a big jump, huh...!? This is the completed image after I color the lines and render the colors. I wanted to keep this one soft, so I did a lot of airbrushing and gradients while keeping hard shadows to a minimum.

I focused on trying to make the image "glow," so I added a lot of highlights to the edges and colored the lines a bright reddish orange to give the impression of light. I also used warmer tones for the shadows - you'll see a lot of pinks and purples. I didn't want to use super cool tones that would contrast the rest of the image since dramatic lighting wasn't the goal here!

Printable Cards Set #4: "Sweethearts" and "You and I"

Here's another set of greeting cards, this time with Valentine's day in mind! The final cards should measure 3.5"x5" when printed, cut, and folded.

You can print two cards per sheet of A4 or 8.5" x 11" paper - each PDF contains an individual page for each design, plus one with both designs.

Notes: I recommend a slightly heavier paper for these - something like cardstock, if your printer can handle it. I also recommend cutting these using either a ruler and an x-acto (be careful!) or a dedicated paper cutter/trimmer. You can absolutely use scissors, but it may be harder to get a straight cut!

This one didn't win the poll, but I thought it was a really cute suggestion for Valentine's day, so I drew it anyway 😭❤️🧡💛💚💜 (the actual winner will be posted later in the month!)

Patreon Updates

As I mentioned in last month's sketchbook post, the sketchbooks are moving to a slightly more irregular "occasional" schedule - this is because work has picked up a little, so it's difficult to keep up with sketches on top of that since I'm trying to avoid overworking my wrist. I love sketching, though, so hopefully I can still slip it in here and there! This is mostly a "just in case" heads up.

On a more positive note, as far as monthly bonuses go, I'm planning to at least have one bonus wallpaper set, plus a Valentine's-appropriate printable greeting card set. I hope you enjoy them!!

And as far as non-work updates, I've been trying to carve out a little time to work on customizing those doll heads I mentioned before. I haven't gotten to do much, but I've finished the bulk of the carving work on this one! I just need to clean things up a little, and then I have to wait until the weather warms up before I can start sealing and painting.

Still not much to report just yet, but I'm hoping to have some news soon!! In the meantime, I've been getting into dolls a little more lol... I got an MDD body and two heads for a super good price, so I'm going to try my hand at customization soon. My plan is to make vampire and zombie-themed girls!

Whether I'll actually be able to pull it off is anyone's guess, though 😭 I've never customized a doll before, and I'm going to have to carve out the mouths... (please wish me luck, I think I'm going to need it)
