Mini Review #133: Star Trek DS9 4x10/4x11 "Homefront" and "Paradise Lost"

NO ONE TOLD ME THIS WAS GOING TO BE A TWO PARTER!! I thank you all for not telling me as well because when I saw that to be continued sign at the end I lost it. I have been sick for the past week as you may have noticed from lack of mini reviews (as well as finishing up my degree which is done now yay!) so I haven't watched a DS9 episode in two weeks. Needless to say these two episodes were an insane way to jump back into the show! I'll talk about them together because they are connected after all. I really loved the tension and paranoia that the Dominion and Founders have inflicted among the galaxy. We saw it in The Way of the Warrior with the Klingons expanding their empire and now we are seeing it again with Earth. After what was basically a terrorist attack on the planet by the Founders, the planet slowly becomes wrapped in the grip of a very militaristic Starfleet admiral. My favourite part about the first episode was the slowness of its pacing and the methodical way it increased its tension. I found myself holding my breath countless times as it felt like the episode was ramping and ramping towards something major. I also love how the show writes this paranoia. For example, I thought I was being all smart when I guessed that Sisko's dad (legend by the way) was a changeling. Turns out, the show WANTED me to think that so that when he was revealed not to be one, I would feel bad about it and see my own paranoia on the situation as well! Not only this though, but the first episode had a lot of great character moments within the heavy tone. Dax and Odo, O'Brien and Bashir, Jake and his Grandad, Sisko and his Dad, Nog and Jake, there were so many small character driven moments of levity that just felt so good.

Now, the first part ended on what could only be described as a spicy cliffhanger. The prospect of a Jem'Hadar attack ON EARTH after a worldwide power failure occurs was frightening and exciting. This is not what we got in the second episode, however, the outcome remained very satisfying and I may have actually enjoyed it more than an attack. The fact that the admiral faked the attack in order to gain public advantage in increasing military protection of Earth was actually fairly shocking and I didn't see that coming at the end of the first part. I loved the slow build up to the reveal of what actually happened, as well as the tense moments at the end of the episode where the Defiant was pitted against an Excelsior class ship in what could have been the start of the end for Starfleet. The small battle was really fun to watch and the resolution was satisfying and left me with some questions about the future of Earth and Starfleet. My favourite part of the episode though was when a changeling had a little chat with Sisko. The fact that there were only 4 on Earth this entire time and this much chaos was achieved was shocking but what blew me away even more was when it said "this is only the beginning". WHAT DOES THAT MEAN HELLO???? Anyways, I am so excited for more DS9! This two parter was fantastic and I love not knowing when a sneaky two parter will appear!

Mini Review #132: The Matrix Revolutions (2003)

The third instalment of the Matrix franchise and the original ending to the saga has come and I can see that it has a 34% on Rotten Tomatoes and for that I have to say... why? The movie may not be perfect. It may be fairly tedious in in its first hour and then rushed in its second with character moments that I just don't care about. It may be the weakest of the three and have an ending that I did not understand but even still.. do people hate fun?? This movie was entertaining as beans and the final hour especially was non-stop epic-ness at every turn. The music in this film was dialled to eleven and listening to the insane opera go ham in my ears kept giving me chills with just how awesome it was. The visuals as well were outstanding. For a movie that was made 21 years ago all the visuals pretty much hold up and look stunning. This is blockbuster filmmaking at its finest at times. Big, loud, dumb, and fun. The Wachowski's really understand how to frame and film action and there are some really cool shots in here. From the incredible wides of Zion as it slowly falls to ruin to the intense and fluid movement of the camera as it follows a ship racing down a maintenance tunnel, every single action sequence is nuts to butts intense and the camera work just pulls you right in. I was thinking during this film that the Wachowski's should direct a super hero film for DC because their directorial talents would bring some of the coolest actions to a superhero film in my opinion. I was also thinking they should direct a Star Wars film but that was just wishful thinking. But imagine the lightsaber fights they could pull off with their knowledge of filming Kung-Fu like action. While there is so much that could have been better in The Matrix Revolutions, there is so much that it did right as well. I think if you haven't seen this since it came out in theatres many years ago, give both this and the second one a chance as they are still insanely fun action films. I will be watching the 4th... oh boy I have heard things about that one.

Mini Review #131: Rocky Aur Rani (2023)

This was the exact movie I had been craving for a while. A cheesy, big budget, romantic comedy with some excellent songs to dance to and interesting family dynamics to boot. Yes the message is very on the nose and the movie lacks anything subtle, but it makes up for it in my opinion with its big heart and fun energy! The songs are almost all go big or go home style. There will be 500 million backup dancers in the same room as our protagonists as they dance big sweeping moves with intense and vibrant visuals. It is definitely overwhelming on the senses but in a good way. I really enjoyed how many of the songs had some classical feel to it as Rani and her family loved classical songs. It gave the movie a much more unique feel compared to the endless films with pop songs thrown into them. Rocky and Rani as well were very fun to watch as the main romantic pairing and there was so much energy between them that it felt electric. Their chemistry was off the charts at times and there were moments were they made scenes so steamy you could cut the air with a knife. The message of equality and breaking away from tradition, while very on the nose, worked in the film as it was central to many of the characters beliefs. It was really satisfying seeing Rocky's super traditional family slowly break the mold and see life differently. So yeah, don't have much to add really. It's a movie that feels like a big budget soap opera but it has lots of energy and heart on screen!

Mini Review #130: Star Trek DS9 4x8/4x9 "The Sword of Kahless" and "Our Man Bashir"

Two more fantastic episodes of DS9 today! Season 4 is a rollercoaster and it just wont stop. The Sword of Kahless, as I guessed before watching, was a Klingon episode focusing on Worf. He meets an old hero of his Kor who sets him and Dax up to go on a quest to fetch the Sword of Kahless, a mythical sword that is said to unite the Klingon Empire when found. A really interesting premise that starts out feeling like Indian Jones as they go searching in a tomb to find the sword. All I could think about during this episode though was how the sword was basically the Ring of Power from LOTR. Like hear me out. The sword is a powerful weapon not just physically, but in symbolism and identity as well. It forces two characters who respected and admired each other to fall out, distrust each other, and eventually try to kill each other. It manipulated their minds with thoughts of power so much so that they were willing to kill to get what they want. Yes, the sword does not contain the soul of a dark lord inside of it, but there is a fight between Kor and Worf that is eerily similar to Frodo and Gollum in Mount Doom. Anyways that aside, I really like the slow pacing of Worf and Kor becoming more and more distrusting of each other. At first you hate Kor because he is being unreasonable but soon after, you start to realize they are both being unreasonable and that the sword may not be the best thing for the Klingon Empire after all. Dax was pretty epic in this episode as well and felt like a mother watching over her two annoying children at times! Really fun and intense episode at times with a bittersweet ending.

Now for Our Man Bashir. This was an episode that I was anticipating immensely and WOW IT DELIVERED. Not only was it an episode with my man Bashir as the main character (my favourite character mind you), but it was also a satire and parody of JAMES BOND?? Like who would have ever guessed that Star Trek would make an pretty much James Bond spoof but here we are and it was so much fun! The episode itself didn't contain much character development besides Bashir earning Garak's respect even more but what it did contain was entertainment. It was crazy seeing the main crew memebers like Sisko and Dax be stuck in teleportation limbo at the start but when I saw Kira appear in the holosuit as a Russian KGB officer I knew I was in for a treat. Of course, everyone was fantastic as their James Bond characters but Sisko really stood out as the maniacal evil villain with an absurd and over the top evil plan. I mean come on, he wanted to laser beam the surface of the Earth which would then shrink the planet and cover the entire surface in water expect for his little island. So James Bond. I also really enjoyed seeing crew members who don't usually take the spotlight have to deal with something that the main cast would usually deal with. Seeing Odo, Quark, Rom, and Eddington have to work together in roles that usually Dax, O'Brien, Kira, and Sisko would fill was a treat and they managed to make it work. Overall a top tier episode that feels endlessly re-watchable. Make Bashir the actual James Bond ASAP!!

Mini Review #129: Planet of the Apes (1968)

I came into this movie knowing the twist as it is pretty famous and as someone who loves film I was of course going to have heard about it even if I hadn't seen the movie. While knowing the twist obviously kept me from being as surprised and shocked as I would have been, it did help me see all of the little bread crumbs the film drops for the audience up until the big moment!

I had always thought, for most of my life, that this movie and the other older Apes movies were cheesy and boring. I used to think that the makeup looked bad (in still images) and that the whole film couldn't hole a dime to the newer trilogy which I love so much. Turns out younger Oliver was stupid because this was a fantastic movie. I was expecting a movie about Apes and Humans which I got, but I not expecting a movie that discusses scientific and religious beliefs. I was not expecting a movie that has something to say about race and class and I was not expecting a whole courtroom drama for 20 minutes. The movie explores a lot of themes really well and in ways that are both interesting and parallel to our little old human world. Jerry Goldsmith did the score for this one and it was so fantastic and haunting. It felt like a jumbled mess of a score at times and I think that was the point. It was different and unnerving which really gave the feeling of an unknown planet. The cinematography and camera work as well was actually really good. At the start especially when our three astronauts were walking endlessly though the desert looking for life, there were so many amazing wide shots of vast nothingness that it made my hands and mouth start to feel so dry. Everything else about the film was also so fun from the slow buildup in the ultimate mystery to the Apes slowly learning more about Taylor. Really enjoyed my time with this one! Not sure how the other films hold up but if there are any good ones let me know!!
