Requisite COVID-19 Update

Hey fam,

I'm sure you're sick to death of e-mails informing you of the Coronavirus impact on things, so here is one more. Owing to the nature of the work we produce we aren't going to be as impacted as some (film productions or, ahem, THEATER) but there will likely be some shifting around in both the short and long term, so I wanted to keep you all updated.

First, for our main YouTube channel, we are working on Cats content, as well as a tie-in Nebula Original, both of which we are hoping to get out by the end of the month. The concern there is schools and daycares inevitably shutting down, which doesn't effect me but does effect Angelina, so it is possible that one or both of these might be delayed, though hopefully not too much - the hope is to have both done by the end of the month.

Less certain is It's Lit! and Musicalsplaining - the former we shoot in Austin, TX, and I live in CA and Princess lives in NY, so obviously that is put on hold until either we can come to an agreement with PBS to shoot episodes remotely (which is looking less and less likely as more and more businesses shut down here in LA), or we decide when it's safe to resume travel, perhaps sometime in May. Where those episodes were planned for release every three weeks (with the next one on Afrofuturism scheduled to drop next Wednesday), it's looking like it's going to have some delays, though exactly how long we don't know and likely won't know for some time. Musicalsplaining we have a buffer up to episode six, but with all of the shows closing we aren't entirely sure how we're going to handle that yet - episode seven WAS going to be Book of Mormon, but that tour leaves LA on March 29th, and seeing as all shows have now closed to the end of March, well...

Since it's in late July my book tour will probably still happen, though I likely won't know details on that for at least another month. Really biting my nails for VidCon (even though I know you're not supposed to do that), but it's not looking good. In the mean time, Dan-O and I are hosting a stream tonight at 9 PM PDT on his Twitch channel (twitch.tv/foldablehuman) to commiserate and brainstorm online events we can do during the isolation period, since all of the going places is now cancelled. So in the coming weeks let's do our best to practice social distancing and try to not make this whole nightmare be in vain, that the epidemic curve might flatten, and be gone by the time spring... springs in earnest.

Wash them hands,

Lindsay

Axiom's End - Goodreads Giveaway

Just received this - tfw you hear about your own giveaway via e-mail blast.

So I'd been talking with SMP about how we can do Patreon exclusive stuff leading up to the release, but owing to Patreon's rules, I can't really do giveaways on Patreon, and here's why: Anything that might resemble gambling (in this case, effectively, paying a Patreon fee to enter a raffle) is against Patreon's rules. So even though I wanted to do a Patreon-based giveaway, I... can't.

Keeping within Patreon's rules, we can't offer ARCs as a perk (because those are not meant for sale, just for review, and are "uncorrected" regardless), and offering a finished book as a new tier perk just seems unfeasible since it would be a one-time reward and just doesn't make sense vis a vis Patreon's monthly model.

But here's what I can do, I *can* let you know that Goodreads or other external platforms are doing a giveaway, which is incredibly lame, I know! Also, incredibly lame, it's only for people in the US and Canada! Unfortunately, if I don't want to break Patreon's TOS, this might be the best I can do before July. Anyway, here's the link: https://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/show/304467-axiom-s-end

There will be more in the coming months, so I'll go ahead and post those here when they happen. Good luck, Bah-weep-Graaaaagnah wheep ni ni bong.

Posting this version because I can't use the music in the final video as it is the "Love Theme from Cold Mountain" and is therefore under copyright, but I am emotionally attached to it all the same.

Fall updates

Hey gang,

So ignoring hiatuses, the goal in general for my channel is to release at least one fully produced video per month. Obviously that has not been the case of late, and I figured I at least owed it to people an explanation of what's going on behind the scenes, since at the face the answer appears to be "nothing" when in fact it's "lots."

So the first ~ exclusive ~ that hasn't been announced publicly is It's Lit! is coming back to PBS Digital Studios in 2020, and this time for a lot more episodes! This will present some challenges with regard to my main channel and keeping that more or less on track for regular uploads, but I have a good team and for this round, we're also bringing on Princess Weekes (who by day is assistant editor at The Mary Sue) to be co-writer and co-host, in addition to some of the writing work she's being doing for my channel. We're also producing a mini-series for The Financial Diet on the subject of money and movies/film - look for that on their YouTube channel in early 2020.

But the biggest thing for me that I uh... forgot to announce here (sorry) you probably already know if you follow me on Twitter is that my debut novel that I've been working on for years in ~secret~, Axiom's End, is being published by St. Martins Press in July, 2020, it's got aliens in it (pre-order link here:  http://bit.ly/AxiomsEnd ) So while this book is more or less in the can (I'm at the copy edit stage right now, which, woof) thing is I pitched these jerks at St Martins a series, and this is only book one, so if you see me tweeting about neologisms and writing a thing that takes place in 2008, this is that. Hoofing it to get that first draft written as quickly as possible has been a big chunk of how I've been spending my last two months. And it hasn't even been announced yet and likely won't be until.... early 2020! I'm extremely burned out!

Anyway, the next video I release (for my main channel) will be about that and the unholy hell involved in pursuing a career in traditional publishing (hope ya like rejection), and I'll have some semi-gratuitous Phantom of the Opera-related content after that. I don't know how realistic it will be to keep to the schedule of a fully produced essay per month next year, but we'll do the best we can.

Thank you all for your support and for generally being cool dudes,

Lindsay

Game of Throne Part 2 update

Hi friends! This is Elisa, Lindsay's assistant. She is winging her way to Ireland for WorldCon and the Hugo Awards as we speak, but we need to correct something with the Game of Thrones video. She's asked me to reupload it, which I am going to do right now, but that means deleting the existing one. So if you have any trouble watching the video in the meantime, we beg you to be patient while we experience technical difficulties. I'll drop a note on this post to let you know as soon as it's all finished and reuploaded. Please stand by, and thank you for understanding!

April Showers bring May... updates!

Hello! Angelina chiming in with some exciting news from Lindsay and the rest of the team! Just wanted to keep you looped in on what is going to be a very busy and exciting summer:

  • BIGGEST McLARGE NEWS: The Hobbit Duology is nominated for a Hugo Award in the category of Best Related Work! We’re up against some really stacked competition (Ursula K. LeGuin and David Naimon! An Archive of Our Own! Jo Walton! The Mexicanx Initiative! Alec Nevala-Lee!), but it’s an honor just to be included with all of these greats. We couldn’t have done it without help from Dan Olson, Rajneel Singh, Tom Augustine, Elisa Hansen, and, of course, Nella! For a full list of nominees, check out: http://www.thehugoawards.org/2019/04/2019-hugo-award-1944-retro-hugo-award-finalists/
  • As the various maternity leaves start wrapping up over here (wooh), Lindsay will be back with a regular schedule of YouTube content in mid-May. (Is the next video Disney-related?.... In the name of #brand, yes.)
  • Over the summer, Lindsay will be working on Other Secret Projects (aka the book) that still haven’t been publicly announced because of #reasons, but please read between the lines, kids.
  • Lindsay will be at VidCon this July as a Featured Creator! More to come! As for me, I'll be there wearing my most embarrassing t-shirts.

As always, thanks again for your patronage and patience! We’ve been able to accomplish so much over the last year, and a HUGE part of that comes from your support. We’re so excited to get back on schedule and to have you along for the journey.

Cheers!
Angelina M.

Pre-announcement and other things

This is a challenging post to write, as at its crux it is effectively "this is an announcement that there will soon be an announcement", but I want to get this in place now as we aren't producing anything this month, and possibly next month, and want to give Patrons (especially at the $10+ level since your main reward is video production-related) the option to pause or lower .

So the first announcement, is, well, that - after some consideration, I've decided that after going pretty much nonstop for, well, a while (minus one small break in October) that it might be a good idea to build some breaks from production in from time to time, and now is a good time for several reasons.

First, if you follow me on Twitter you may already know that my co-editor, co-writer and Blingee artisan Angelina has just welcomed her first baby. In addition to that, Elisa (who moderates my YouTube comments, general correspondence and is generally in charge of this Patreon) is about to welcome her second baby in, oh, about a week. This is the winter of babies, and subsequently of maternity leave and me running the whole show by myself.

But there are other factors at play - the first (the one I can sort of talk about) is the process of leasing studio space here in LA! Wow, we're inching towards professionalism! Problem is I've a) never done this before so I have no idea what I'm doing and b) turns out that leasing commercial space means you need to go through all these "processes" with "permits" and "being ADA compliant" and "fixing the flooding issue that has happened because it has rained so fucking much this winter." Turns out, it's a whole thing! This has eaten up a lot of time this month and given that we're not even to the "go to the city to ask for permits" phase yet, it looks to be a while.

The other Thing that I'm working on is a non-video-related project that I have been working on for a long.... long... long...

long...

long time. One that has been confirmed but which I cannot yet announce. I'm hoping it will be made public within the next month or two. But rest assured, we are doing things! Those of us who are not nurturing precious new life and the future of humanity are keeping busy behind the scenes. As always, we thank you for your support and for keeping the lights on and giving us the means to have health insurance in our dystopian hellscape of a country.

Draft - Product Placement and Fair Use

I seem not to have the ability to do sponsored videos that are not themselves about the very concept of sponsorship.

This one blows through a LOT of facts and concepts, and we're still working on the sourcing but even then it's possible some things slipped through the cracks. As always, I encourage you to give feedback to things that may not work (or may be wrong), provided that they are changeable within a timely fashion. Also, don't be a jerk - I know I said "incidences" instead of "instances", nothing I can do about it at this point. Wouldn't want Skillshare to be mad at me because I missed a deadline.
