Halloween Sculpts Next Month

This year, I'm on the case with getting stuff ready for Halloween. My plan is to sculpt spooky monsters from the D&D books. So if you have a monster you would like to see made, please drop it into the comments below.

The Crystal Princess

Zeek and zim hop a little with joy as the grader approves. "I knew your party would be right for the job". You still feel a little uneasy as Zeek brings you still deeper into the citadel.

However, that unease slowly seems to melt away. You hear strange harmonies as the crystals themselves seem to sing. You find the source of the singing. A geckold unlike any you've seen previously. Metallic sheened scales and oversized fins frame a form slimmer and a little taller than the rest. She looks up towards all of you as the crystals slowly quieten. She smiles before saying

"Finally, the ones the crystals speak about have arrived"

The Crystal Grader

Finally, we arrive at a workshop. Geckolds of every kind are working to and frow between spinning wheels and other contraptions. All working on stones of various size and colour.

At the end of the hall sits an imposing figure. A little taller than most and covered head to toe in gemstones.

Zeek approaches and bows low, saying "grand grader, I bring 4 souls who I deeply right for the duty the queen bid me preform. Will you grade them?"

The grader opens his eyes, both a dazzling swirl of colours. He collects a staff like wise, heavy with stones. You notice, unlike most of his fellows, this one has frills at the side of his head.

"Kneel, if you think your self worthy to stand with our most prized student."

You and your party kneels. He comes to each of you... his tongue splatting wetly against each of your foreheads in tern. You reflect briefly that at least his breath isn't too unpleasant.

He ponders for a moment before turning to Zeek "I deem them of quality, and high grade. Present them to the princess so she might be allowed to explore the new realms"

Jerry The Mad Seer - keeper of the big stone

As you move deeper into the keep, your parties wizard seems to be a little distracted. He keeps looking around suddenly. You carefully enquire what's wrong.

"Don't you hear that? That sound of whispering? No?... "

You shrug. This isn't the first time your friend has heard things. Suddenly, zeek calls out.

"Ah, friends, we need to go round."

Go around what? You ask cautiously. Out of the corner of your eye, you see another geckold. Lit by the glow of an immense stone.

zeek quickly squeaks, "DON'T LOOK, just follow me... all is fine. We don't need our fortunes told..."

Heeding his advice, you walk back and round. You can feel the eyes of the creature on your back the entire way.

Apologies friends, that was jerry... we call him the seer or keeper of the big stone. He appears from time to time when events of great importance arrive. He can read the ebb and flow of the future with great accuracy... and, as many have learned. You don't want your future read.

  • DM note - this character will be un stated, have fun.

Guard Captain

Further in the complex, there was a sudden commotion. Something fast exploded though one of the doors, scuttling your way. You recognized it immediately as a mimic.

Readying your selves for a fight, something brightly coloured dropped from the ceiling. One of the spiny geckolds landed atop the mimic, burring its axe right in its centre. Releasing an ululating shriek the mimic fell to the ground. Spilling its contents

Zeek growled softly, "dammed hiders... always trying to get their tentacles on our best crystals." zeek nodded and bowed to the guard captain as we continued on our way.

We are nearly at the grader's area... they will decide your worthiness to guard our future.

The Gem Splitters

You arrive inside the main part of the citadel. Its beauty takes you by surprise. Vast halls, all lit by crystals of varying size and colour. The place looks like the inside of a geode but more organized.

Zeek and Zim smile at you and the party. Saying "it's impressive, no? Vast halls of crystal... as we are heading in the right direction, I will introduce you to some of the others.

The next hall over features lines of miners holding their finds. At the end of each, you see a larger geckold carrying an immense hammer. A miner places their crystal on a stone plinth, where it is smashed by the hammer carrying ones. zeek explains these are the gem splitters. Only the important crystals can withstand the smash of these hammers.

Miners lucky enough to find an important crystal are paid handsomely. The rest are still paid, but not as much. There is only so much you can do with shiny rocks.

Your parties rogue seems to be having a fit at this sentence, knowing full well even a small handful of these rocks would set any one up for life.

The Guards - Spined Geckolds

You look up at the immense walls to see what look like far spiner versions of the zeek. zeek catches your glance and explains. There are a few different varieties of us gecokolds. Spineys' like those above tend to be guards and such.

Leopards like me make up most of the population and will fill in anywhere, there are others, but they tend to be quite rare so ill point them out as we go.

You tilt your head a little more as you pass under more walls. Each of these guards seem to be equipped with crystal axes, while having a similar shape, each are different colours. Matching the crystals they were on their chest and arms.

Magic crystals, eh... they must be worth a fortune.

Cik & Klak - The miners

Zeek explains that their coloneys princess is demanding an opportunity to explore these new lands. While the queen is happy to grant this request, she would prefer if locals of good quality were to act as her bodyguards/ guides.

Zeek also explained the payment would be in gemstones similar to the ones the thieves had attempted to steal. Your party confers briefly, realizing you are largely broke, this wouldn't be a bad job to take on.

3 weeks of travel later, you and your party are at the fortress, entrance to 'the nest'. It is a hive of activity. To your astonishment, there are many more of these geckolds than you supposed there would be.

Some sunning themselves on walls and roofs, while others seem to be mining or squabbling over large crystals. Zeek explained that right of ownership is based on who licks the stone first... a simple system but effective.

Most of these crystals aren't worth much until one of the graders tests it for magical potential.

Zeek & Zim - Geckold Bard

There have been rumours abound about a new fellow in town. Half of the debate is about whether it's a short dragon born or some kind of thick tailed kobold. But the second is that he's paid for his stay in gemstones. This last rumour has reached the ears of some of the town's thieves, so the barkeep has asked you and your party to keep an eye on them.

The evening rolls around, and your party is set up to watch and listen to the goings-on in the tavern. Eventually, the newcomer arrives at the stage and begins to sing. It's an unusual melody, but he plays well and the smaller ... creature on his shoulder sings in harmony.

His songs come to a close and the bar gives him applause, and he heads to the bar for the evening, shaking hands along the way. Of course, in the process of going from stage to the bar he is robed blind by a few thieves, and you spring into action.

All told, the local guards have 3 new inmates and newcomer's belongings are returned. Speaking in surprisingly good common, he invites you all to sit and talk. Much food and drinking later, he explains he is a 'geckold' and is here from distant lands with a task most important for the future of his people... and by our actions this day... he has found what he's looking for.

OK, so we are getting somewhere. This time I've made it a little slower, but still quick enough to not get boring. What do you think?

Wolf of the Weave & Thundercat Illustrations

Can you tell I've been trying to improve my understanding of colour? Not an easy thing, I can tell you.

The wolf I've tried to make as unusual as possible, strange purples and reds moving into a nice white coat on top. Your players should look at it, saying... it's a wolf... but not as I know it. The 3rd eye should help too.

As for the thunder cat, I borrowed a colour scheme from the thunder boar I made some time ago. Would make for an interesting encounter, eh?

Shorts Test

ok so im a little all over the place with my social posting. Im trying to work out the best way to share and promote via shorts. This is one of my tests... what do you guys think?

View Post

Nure-Onna

The last page... and finally you see it. The tall form, the horns and the body snaking across the page. The name reads Nure-Onna, taking from a forgotten language. This half snake creature while similar to a yuan-ti has no relation to their kind.

It is a ghost, a spirit that haunts the material plane. In the guise of a beautiful woman, it enchants its victims. Unlike many, it doesn't kill them outright straight away. Instead, removing their soul which she stores inside her clutch of eggs kept safe.

Gestation is usual around 2–3 weeks. Smashing the eggs allows the soul to be unbound, so normal resurrection spells will work. Alternatively, finding and destroying the egg close to the original victim may allow the soul to return.

You sigh... of course it was a woman. When will that idiot learn. First it was a succubus in a tavern and now this.

View Post

Moss Bringer

Two pages left. Your hope slowly turning to desperation. First one ... not even close. Some strange creature called a moss bringer.

Small stout and normally found around ruined settlements. Its strange magic presence causing stone and wood to decay, slowly becoming mossy and eventually falling apart. Its effects are similar to that of rust monsters but for other materials. Very dangerous in towns.

Useful to know about I suppose should we need to break in somewhere over time. Carry one of these around, and suddenly stone walls aren't such a problem.

View Post

Wolf of the Weave

Further and further into the pages of this book you go with still no luck. A distant howling cry makes you pause as you look into the once again. On the page is a strange looking wolf, 3 eyes stare back at you

Wolf of the weave is the title. This unusual creature is said to inhabit between the weave and weft of magic, sometimes aiding, sometimes hunting down those who would travel its strange lands. It is intelligent enough to converse with but suffers from an Ellough detachment, making it unreliable as an ally

known to have a taste for miniature giant space hamsters... no idea why.

View Post

Stone Shark

Worryingly, you seem to be reaching the book's end and no closer to the information needed. The next creature of note gave you a start when a string of music started playing... seemingly out of nowhere.

Building to a crescendo, you felt inclined to run away. The creature described in the book was truly a strange one... the stone shark? A long deceased sea creature, its bones now replaced with stone, allowing it to swim through the ground at a rapid place.

Underlined in the book were the words, "you thought you were safe on the land?"

View Post

Thorn Gorilla

Now a little more weary, turning each page further along, you narrowly avoid being spiked by an oversized thorn.

Excitedly, you look at the page... alas, it's not the creature you seek. Though still noteworthy. A thorn gorilla. Described as a guardian of the more tropical areas of the fey wilds. This normally fairly placid creature becomes enraged when the jungle is under threat.

Strangely, while made from wood and leaves, it is largely fireproof, allowing it to deal with small fires before they become larger problems for the area. Avoid making camp fires in such jungles...

View Post

Sea Foam Naharwhal

A few more pages over and the room is suddenly filled with the smell of the sea, the rush of a sea breeze and the cold of the depths. You look at the page careful to find a shard of horn... encrusted with salt

the entry reads... The sea foam naharwal, (come up with clever celestial name). This creature found with some areas of the water plane is known for its mischievous nature. They are guardians of the sea currents. Swimming in the ocean, largely unnoticed.

Providing the waves and tides are respected, they will leave sailors alone, or even aid those in need. Earning their eyer is dangerous. Their horned heads are adept at destroying ships below the waterline and impaling unweary sailors.

While Ironclad ships are a reasonable defence, but not a perfect one. Best respect the sea, lest these guardians drag you into its depths.

Mud Hippo Painting Reference

So what do you guys think? Would this be useful to you if you were inclined to paint the model? Or wanted a preview before joining?

I should point out this model can't be downloaded yet. This is just a turntable preview.

View Post

Thunder Cat

A few pages along and something gives you a small shock. You look carefully at the page to see, taped to the inside, a few hairs. They glow blue and black.

The page reads. Tonitru Felis maximus, the thunder cat. Said to inhabit the demi planes of wind, these creatures are known for hiding in thunderheads before descending from the skies to catch and kill their prey. Coming down as a bolt of lightening, most don't see their deaths coming.

Warning signs similar to a thunderstorm, however, listen for the sounds of a low growl before the strike or a cat's yowl after the strike.

Recommended defence, rubber lined metal armour or specialized lighting conductors. Once grounded, they aren't too difficult to deal with.

Mud Hippo

"A book on Uncommon Creatures? How uncommon...?" the librarian stares you down with the kind of contempt only librarians have.

You cough a little, "uncommon creatures 6th edition by Griswold Finder...?"

The librarian huffs before walking off with another contemptuous "follow me... and don't touch anything"

Deep within the hallowed halls of this cities library resides the last known copy of uncommon creatures. With any luck, you'll be able to find what you're looking for. Your friends' life hangs in the balance.

After a few formalities, the librarian places the tomb in front of you. "You have 1 hour before we close for the evening. Find what you need and begone before then... or you will be locked in here with the books... not something I would recommend."

The first page shows the lifecycle of something called a mud hippo? All things considered it looks rather friendly... but with a sinking feeling you realize this tome isn't alphabetical... and there's no index.

Best get to work then…

*well guys, it's been 3 months away... I've learned and improved much about what I do... hopefully you'll enjoy the new and improved printed obsession.

Elemental Creatures 2 - WIP

Well this break has been great so far. Really helped get a lot into perspective and bring everything together for the future. So just to make sure I wasn't losing my edge, I made a start on some of the models to be released on the 1st of august. Let me know what you guys think?

We've got a water naharwal and a mud hippo.

Loyalty & Backups done

Thanks to a few of you who reminded me I was a little behind on both the backups and loyalty rewards. The break is going well, I'm starting to get a sense of where things are going to go once I start up again next month (sculpting wise) so watch this space.
