The mystery trip to York!

A few years ago, two of my girlfriends and I took the train up to York for the weekend. And naturally, I left my camera at home!

Here's a few shots that my friends took - they were kind enough to let me steal their photos.

York was rainy and cold but such a beautiful city. I'd love to go back eventually - perhaps this time in nicer weather!

I went to York a few years back predominantly to see the National Rail Museum. Just so happened the JORVIK Viking Festival was going on at the same time. What a fascinating experience. Great cozy Pubs, The Cathedral and of course "The Shambles."

The problem with the railway museum is a load of fantastic exhibits, but the presentation and information with them is often disappointing, I have a nasty feeling it has been "dumbed down" rather. If you do go into the NRM, then buy a guide book and scan it, ideally before you go.

If you're going near Whitby - then the museum of Victorian science is a must. N.B. You'll HAVE to book. And if you're up North, both the Leeds and Bradford Industrial Museums are fantastic - stuffed full of social history too. All, as you pass through N. Yorks, Fountains and the other Abbeys too. https://www.museumofvictorianscience.co.uk/

I did a 3 day trip to York in 2019, it's lovely isn't it and everywhere you turn is pretty without (mostly) overdoing it. I stayed at the hotel opposite the main entrance to the Minster which was perfect for exploring just about everywhere. The Shambles is a lovely area for shops and walking on top of the old city walls is great too. I was also surprised how much I enjoyed the railway museum too, not being a train buff, but there's so much history on show there that you don't need to be - especially all of the old Royal Trains from over the years.

Is this where the York Peppermint Patties come from? lol

The Cathedral is amazing! Thanks for sharing the photos with us...

York is such a beautiful place to walk, and we even took our two young sons with us the last time. There's a great railroad museum, and an underground Viking museum right in the city. You can walk all the way around on the city wall, and shop in the "Shambles"!
