2023's Instant Pics

The "Selfie in Three Parts" was a significant exercise in self portraiture. It's three parts included the drawing (how I perceive myself), the instant pic (how others perceive me), and the haiku (my inner thoughts).

Presented here, and set to music is the collection of pictures taken with my FujiInstax instant camera!

2023 Gesture Drawings

It was a consistent year of posting gesture drawings. Created in my studio mirror.

This is a year of drawings. Compiled with all of the drawings I could accumulate.

This is how I've seen and drawn myself over the past year.

Selfie in Three Parts

Today was a busy day of planning while keeping warm inside.

Today’s haiku:

In the window’s warmth,

I make plans for the new year.

Awaiting its joys.

I was inspired by a cold winter sunset for this watercolor, gouache, and ink painting.

I like baking, however, I don't care much for sweets.

Thus, the behind the scenes look at my baking creation process!

Winter Solstice

In the light of the shortest day of the year, I danced and pranced in the sunshine of the shortest day!

It isn't particularly profound, but it does mark the change. From here out, the days get longer, and the darkness shorter. I look forward to the next rotation around the sun. I will play, laugh and live in the lengthening sunlight.

Wednesday Walk

Forget about the cold, let's go for a Wednesday Walk!

This walk happens to be smack in the middle of the deepest, darkest part of winter. But there was no darkness on this beautiful afternoon. At moments, the wind sends a chill into my heart while other moments the sun warms my face. It was a lovely juxtaposition.

Selfie in Three Parts

Being a self portrait artist can be challenging. It requires both physical and emotional assessment of self.

It occurred to me today that I’ve not had a lot of full body photos with the instant camera. So here’s one. This whole selfie in three parts practice was started early this year. As you can see from the last photo, I’ve accumulated a lot of them!

A haiku:

Frost on my windows.

Deep in the heart of winter,

Days are short and cold.

Tuesday Update

Happy Taco Tuesday!

It's cold outside, and I've been inside keeping busy and warm.

I have a new pottery piece to share with you, among some other footage of projects I'm working on.

I hope your week is going well.

Today's Drawing

Today's drawing in real time, as it was drawn.

I went for a bit of moodiness with the light while incense burns in the foreground. Creating a smokey atmosphere.

In the edit, I went with a bit of technicolor.

Selfie in Three Parts

I’ve completed work on the piece inspired by the illustrations of Edward Gorey. Taking inspiration from his solitary feeling ink drawings and using acrylic paint and wood cut outs of plywood.

A haiku:

Solitary man

Stands alone in a landscape

Looking far away.

Video help

Are you having trouble getting my movies to play?  Did you at one time have trouble and somehow fixed it?  I'd like to hear from you.  This is a problem that has come up from time to time and I haven't really been able to do anything to control it on my end.  Everything going back to August should be on an available setting for the corresponding tiers, however if that is not the case, I'd like to hear some details.  Maybe one of you knows the perfect fix and this is your opportunity to be a hero!  I like providing opportunities.

An instant photo in color, late afternoon demonstrates the grayness of the day. Not particularly cold or warm just wintry.

A haiku:

Gray looms overhead

Bringing the sky in closer

Just above the trees.

In Progress

Working more on my art inspired by the illustrations and work of Edward Gorey.

This is the second, or background component for the figure that I shared previously this week.

In the tradition of other works I've created out of plywood, the figure and the background will be joined as one piece.

The challenge with emulating this style is that the marks used by Gorey are very small, created in ink. These marks also feel very small as I create them with a little brush. But are in fact, acrylic.

Vote Redux

Wednesday Walk Redux

Revisiting one of my first freedom walks, with a bit more background information! There's more to it than meets the eye. Like that moment when I point to my mask. It's because someone drove by.

I like to look back at progress, see where I've been and how far I've come.

Selfie in Three Parts

My three part selfie plus today’s work in progress.

The sunshine and blue skies were very misleading today. I found out how much when I took today’s instant photo. Brrr! I’ll just stay inside.

Today’s haiku:

Another cold day

So I cozy up with art

Painting through winter.

Tuesday Update

Happy Taco Tuesday!

Here's what I've been up to already this week. Including: pottery makes in the kurinuki style (carving away from a solid block of clay) and a work inspired by the illustrations of Edward Gorey.

Edward Gorey works were once featured in the introductory segment of Mystery Theater, which was a regular feature on PBS.

Behind the Scenes: Today's Painting

A behind the scenes look at the creation of today's painting.

Using watercolor and a fountain pen, I created a abstract painting with a feel of earthy colors and organic shapes.

Selfie in Three Parts & What’s on the Easel

I brought out the watercolor and fountain pen today. It’s been awhile and there’s a great deal of satisfaction from completing a watercolor painting. I didn’t have a subject in mind. As I looked over my colors, the browns and greens really appealed to me. There’s an earthiness to the painting.

When the watercolor was dry, I used my fountain pen to bring ou some shapes and depth.

I’m wearing pigtails today, which were fun to draw!

A haiku:

Pigments in water

Floating, suspended in pools

Until they are dry.
