Sea Dream

Here's this month's illustration! I've been wanting to do another ocean-themed one for a while, so I'm glad that I was finally able to come up with something!

Wallpaper versions will be available in the Harvest tier in the next few days, and the set will come with both a daylight and nightlight version, which you can see above! (because I couldn't decide between the two LOL)

In the meantime, I've made prints, posters, etc available. If you purchase anything, be sure to use your patron discount.

May Newsletter

Hi all, I hope you've been enjoying the warm weather!

This month, I've decided to make some minor changes to the way things work around here, so I wanted to give everyone a heads up!

  •  Monthly Newsletter: Starting now, this will be accessible to all members, including those in the free tier! While I don't always have much to say, the newsletter will include info on what I've been up to, upcoming dates of note, etc.

  • Paid Tier Discount Codes: While I used to share these in the newsletter, I've moved them to this pinned post, which should always be accessible from my home page. Hopefully this makes them easier to locate! I've also increased the inprnt discount to 20%.

What I've been up to:

Most of my time has been taken up by work on our graphic novel The Netherlings. It's been a slow start, but I'm about halfway through thumbnails and hoping to finish this phase up by the end of the month. Unfortunately, my thumbnails look like this, so there's not a lot to see at this point lol...

After that is pencils - at that point things will get a little more interesting, so I'll share bits of my progress in the Harvest tier once those get going!

Beyond that, I've also been (slowly) working on another skirt design:

Things to look forward to:

Speaking of skirts, starting tomorrow two of the designs that I made in collaboration with Maya Kern will be available on miniskirts for the first time! Here's a peek at how those turned out:

A few of my other designs are still available on midi skirts as well, so I hope you'll check them out! And as always, Maya's skirts range from XS-8X, have pockets deep enough to fit a Switch, and are produced in a SEDEX and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified factory, certifying ethical labor practices and responsible textile production.

Final notes:

As always, thank you to everyone who's stuck around (or just joined) here! I always enjoy sharing work with you all.

And an additional thank you to everyone who picked something up from my store launch - I had so much fun designing everything, and I'm thrilled that you enjoyed it, too! I have so many more ideas, and I hope that I'll have time to put a fall/winter collection together. I'm also hoping that I'll be able to move my prints over so that everything is available in one place, but we'll see!

I hope May is good to you! 🌷

Sketchbook #57

Some sketches I managed to squeak out between work! First is a redraw of the cover for The Sprite and the Gardener (not sure I'll finish it though), followed by a handful of weirder throwbacks.

Since I've been working on our new graphic novel more I've been thinking about how my first big foray into "professional" comics was my run as the artist for the Steven Universe comics from Boom Studios. I didn't have a ton of artistic freedom back then, but the designs are kind of burned into my memory from drawing them so many times, so I wanted to try drawing them a little more loosely.

The third anniversary of my and Joe Whitt's graphic novel The Sprite and the Gardener is coming up soon, so it's been on my mind. So here's Wisteria on top of some camellias! (I might post a few process pics of this for patrons sometime next month, but probably nothing too fancy)

If you're interested, you can order it through just about any retailer that sells books, but you can also request it from your local library! Thank you to anyone who's taken the time to read it already :')

(ps, a close up in case anyone wants a better look!)

Shop Now Open!

Hi all! I've been working on putting together a little spring/summer-themed merch collection, and it's finally live!

✨You can find it here!✨

For the sake of transparency, I'm running this shop through Fourthwall and am leaving order fulfillment to them, but I have tested the quality of the items myself and am happy with them. I went this route because it addressed a few of my concerns:

1) I unfortunately do not have the time, space, or physical stamina to handle inventory and shipping myself right now, and

2) This method means that I don't have to worry about producing excessive waste if a design doesn't do well; an item is only produced if an order is placed!

Anyway, I hope you'll check it out, and let me know if you run into any issues! 🌻🌷🌼

PS, a reminder to paying patrons to use your discount code!

What's in a comic pitch?

Since our upcoming graphic novel was announced a while back, I thought it'd be a good time to talk a little about the pitching process! All of the included art is pretty old at this point (and not even relevant anymore), so bear with me haha!

There are so many ways to pitch a book - I'll try to provide some broader context, but keep in mind that I'm not an expert! I'll be speaking from my own experience, but hopefully it will be useful or interesting.

(PS, you can find all previous posts that discuss my approach to making art here!)

Where do you even start?

Scenario #1: Let them come to you. Sometimes an artist is directly approached by editors who are interested in their work and would like to know whether the artist has any ideas. This is actually what happened with The Sprite and the Gardener; I had done a little work with Oni Press on one of their monthly series, and after that was done, I was asked to pitch. Sometimes editors will contact artists they see on social media, too.

Anyway, while this may seem ideal, if this happens to you and you don't have an agent, start querying. Learn from my experience: you'll want an agent before you agree to anything. This is actually a good opportunity to go agent searching, too, since it signals that you're in demand.

Scenario #2: Go to them. This is what we did with our current book, The Netherlings, and in my experience you'll need an agent for this.

In our case, we tossed the idea out to our agent who felt that it was worth pursuing, worked on putting a pitch together under her guidance, and then had her send it to editors that she felt would be receptive.

So, what's in a pitch?

There's a huge range here. A pitch can be a single idea. It can be a synopsis, or an outline. It can include character and concept art. It can include a few sketched pages, or even a few complete pages. In rare cases, it can be a fully completed work (this typically happens with webcomics that were later picked up by publishers). It just depends!

Our PDF included, in this order:

  • A cover sheet with the title, our names, and the name and contact info of our agent.

  • Drawings of the main cast and a short bio for each. We wanted to keep it snappy and to have the vibe of the book come through - so a little sincere, but also a little silly. Here's one as an example:

  • Sample pages. These are to help the editor visualize the final form of the book, and in our case, to try to "hook" them. Our agent felt that it would be best for us to include... the first 30 pages of the book as samples lol...! Most were sketches, but we did throw in a few colored ones!

  • We then included a summary of the rest of the book. It was one page and covered the major plot beats all the way to the end.

  • Artist bios. After introducing yourself, there's a lot of wiggle room here depending on what you have behind you: you can include where you went to school, past projects, any publicity (articles you were featured in, exhibitions), etc.

A lot of things that might not cross your mind can be relevant. Do you work in a library, and therefore have a good grasp on what's popular / a network that ensures a better chance of getting your book on shelves or holding events? Do you have a large social media following that could potentially translate into greater reach? Etc.

  • Short ideas for potential sequels. 1-3 sentences, nothing too wild - this is more just to show that you're open to turning your book into a series and that you've considered how that might look.

  • Lastly, we actually included a more in-depth book outline that was 4.5 pages long. I don't think this is necessary, but we figured we would give them the option to dive further into detail if they were interested. But if not, it didn't distract them from any previous sections.

  • While we didn't include this ourselves, it's very common to include a couple of "comps" - basically, list a few books that you feel are similar in spirit/style/subject/etc that the editor can refer to. This helps them understand the general vibe of things, but also lets them consider how well those books sold and whether there's room in the market for more.

What's the timeline like?

Who knows! There's a huge range. In our case, though, from casually pitching our book to our agent to actually signing our contract and getting to work, it took nearly TWO YEARS. Wild, right!?

Even after that, we actually hit a snag during scripting where things just weren't working out in a way we were all happy with, so we rewrote the whole thing. We pitched this book to our agent in September 2021, and I've only just begun drawing it in the past month!

Granted, The Sprite and the Gardener was much quicker. It was pitched in late 2018 and fully completed by the end of 2020.

All this to say: there are a lot of factors! Every book will have a different timeline, whether that's due to page length or complexity of the art, whether it's part of a best-selling series and they need the next book RIGHT NOW, whether it has multiple people working different roles (writer, artist, letterer, colorist) or one person handling everything, etc.

In all seriousness, though, I wish we all had longer timelines. Making a book is hard work!!!

Misc, etc

Hopefully this was a little illuminating! Maybe it wasn't a very fun read, though. Here are some (very early) character sketches for anyone who made it this far, haha!

Anyway, to anyone hoping to get their story out there, best of luck!!!!!! I hope I get to read it someday!

April Update + Shop Discount Codes

Shop Discount Codes

A (hopefully) exciting update! In addition to the print shop discount, from here on out I'll be posting a monthly code for 10% off of my newly launched merch shop. This month's code is HELLOSPRING (let me know if you have any issues using the code!)

And this month's print shop code for 15% off is M0YX5MD

Unfortunately, while Inprnt's promotions can cover all types of prints and merchandise, I believe my personal code does not cover art cards, frames, etc - this is out of my hands, I'm sorry!

April News / Personal Updates

So as I mentioned above, I've finally launched a general merch shop! Right now you can find t-shirts, tote bags, and drinking glasses with spring and summer-themed designs! My hope with this shop is that I can make items that can be used in everyday life and that I can release a new collection once or twice a year.

For the sake of transparency, I'm running this shop through Fourthwall and am leaving order fulfillment to them, but I have tested the quality of the items myself and am happy with them. I went this route because it addressed a few of my concerns: 1) I do not have the time, space, or physical health to handle shop inventory and shipping on my own right now, and 2) as someone who tries to keep my environmental impact low, this method means that I don't have to worry about producing excessive waste if a design doesn't do well. An item is only produced if an order is placed! Anyway, I hope you'll check it out!

Beyond that, I'm slowly working on the Netherling book, so hopefully I'll have some behind-the-scenes progress to show off soon!

I hope you have a lovely April! 🌷

A while back a bunch of my friends were challenging each other to draw Hazbin characters, so I gave it a try, too. They're REALLY hard to draw...!??

The last two in the set are for skirt designs! The wildflower one should be showing up in Maya's shop in the next few months. I'm not so sure yet on the blueberries!

March News / Personal Updates

Not much has changed since last month - still (carefully) trucking along! I'm planning to open my non-print shop sometime this month, but I haven't decided on a concrete date yet; first day of spring, maybe?

In other news, my latest design (Clovers) for Maya Kern is now available in her shop! I have a lot of memories of making clover rings as a kid, so I wanted this one to evoke that sort of nostalgia. As usual, Maya's skirts are produced using certified ethical labor, fit sizes XS-8X, and have deep, spacious pockets!

Anyway, wishing you good things and a very painless tax season!

January News / Personal Updates

If you've been a patron for a while, you might remember me talking about having arm and hand pain a while back - unfortunately, that never fully went away, and while it seemed to be getting better for a while, I've been stuck at a stubborn plateau these past few months. I've been having to continue my reduced workload, but even full rest doesn't seem to resolve it. With that being said, I don't currently expect this to further impact Patreon - this month is largely squared away, and as long as I can safely work, this space will be my priority. I love drawing, I love sharing what I draw with you all, and I appreciate your support more than I could ever express; I always want to treat that support with the utmost care.

Still, I want to give a heads up that my intention is to seek out further professional opinions in order to figure out where to go from here. On the off chance that path includes halting all work, you'll be the first to know, and I'll update you with a plan from that point onward. Thank you again for being so patient with me throughout this. It's been scary and frustrating, but you've made it much less so.

But, for now, on to lighter topics: back in November, we were taking a walk at night and came across a sweet stray cat. Unfortunately, once the light hit him, we realized he was missing an eye! We took him in and got him stitched up, neutered, and vaccinated, and since then we've been fostering him while working with a rescue to find him a home. And recently, he had a visit with a sweet couple who have now put in their adoption application - so everyone please wish this little guy luck!! We have our fingers crossed that it all works out!

And in art-related news, I have a few merch updates! First up, I've been working here and there on expanding my upcoming spring/summer collection with Fourthwall, and I ordered samples of a few different things to check the quality - here's a peek at how they turned out! (the glass photos are just quick phone pics - I'll get nicer ones later!)

All in all, I'm happy with it, and I'm excited to finally have a way to create more than just prints!! I'm not sure whether Fourthwall supports promo codes, but if it does, I'll be sure to share one with everyone here.

Lastly, one of my more recent designs (Aurora) for Maya Kern is now available in her shop! As usual, Maya's skirts are produced using certified ethical labor, fit sizes XS-8X, and have pockets big enough to hold a Nintendo Switch.

Anyway, I hope you've all been enjoying 2024 so far! Here's to a great February!!

The drawings at the end are some rough ideas for glassware! I want to make one that looks like the characters are snorkeling in your drink.
