Dreams of Home Chapter 42
Chapter 42
The patronus that declared the need for help was from the familiar voice of Melania Black. It took a long moment to process what needed to happen, but the life that had previously been drained from Charlus had come back as he whirled around with a death grip on his wand. His features were now contorted with rage as he barked out, “Monty take the family to Potter Manor and raise the wards to maximum strength. Dorea and I will see to Arcturus.”
The wails of the Longbottom family could still be heard as Charlus began moving towards the door with a pale-faced Dorea following hot on his heels. Harry could hardly comprehend how such a night had fallen apart so quickly. Flashes of Bill and Fleur’s wedding that had been attacked by Death Eaters crossed his mind as he remembered just how fast a beautiful evening could deteriorate. The panic, the uncertainty that had seized him in the moments they fled plagued his mind.
“They are coming.” The voice of Kingsley Shacklebolt echoed.
The panic was instant as people began trampling over one another to escape. Black fog moving at a fast pace entered the massive wedding tent and the arrival of the Death Eaters was signaled by the killing curse taking the life of a red-head that Harry did not recognize.
Whipping his wand out to help he felt Remus Lupin wrap his arms around him to prevent him from helping. The screams to run were on deaf ears as he stood frozen. In horror, he watched Bill and Fleur duel with two Death Eaters attempting to escape with the rest of their guests. His heart lurched as he saw two other Death Eaters join the battle, and he escaped the arms of Remus attempting to assist the couple, but it was too late. A jet of green light struck the beautiful blonde in the chest causing Bill to roar in heartbreak and rage.
SLAP.
Harry blinked hard as his hand shot to his face. Someone was shaking his arm roughly and he snapped out of his thoughts to see Elaina looking at him with worried eyes, “Harry, your godfather.”
Sirius? No, Sirius had been his godfather in his time. His trauma seemed to cloud his judgment as his eyes went to the fallen form of Harfang Longbottom. How had he allowed himself to become so distracted? How had he not noticed someone pointing their wand at the Longbottom Lord? How had he managed to take two people before Harry had surged forward to do something?
“HARRY!”
Elaina now had her hands on both of his shoulders, “Harry, your parents could need us! Arcturus is in trouble. I need you here.”
Snapping out of his thoughts he finally nodded his head and began following the girl who was already practically running towards the Floo network. Monty however got in the way, “Wait a second, Harry.”
“I’ve already wasted too much time.” Harry said, attempting to move around the man that had attempted to lock him into place, “Let me go Monty.”
“If Charlus wanted you there he would’ve told you.”The man said sternly.
“What if he is there? Do you want to send dad to fight that madman with just mum’s help?” Harry spat back.
Monty seemed surprised by the boy’s tone, but shook his head standing strong, “If this Voldemort character is there then Charlus will cut him down.”
“You have no idea what he is capable of!” Harry said, shoving his grandfather back in desperation. The man stumbled shortly and looked at Harry in shock, but the boy shook his head sadly at the man, “I’m not losing anyone else to him.”
Without further thought, he chased after Elaina to the Floo network, but he didn’t make it far before Frank was running at his side, “You won’t make it out through the Floo Network. You need to make it to the grounds. I will show you.”
Harry didn’t understand until they came to the entrance hall where his eyes widened to see people fighting over Floo powder to escape. Cowards, Harry thought bitterly. Had the Death Eaters been attacking this crowd would have been easy targets. The wide eyes of Elaina seemed to show her trepidation about what would happen next, but he called to her and gestured for her to follow them as they pursued Frank through the panicking crowd.
They were out the front doors and running toward the woods in seconds. When they made it past a certain line Frank huffed, “We have cleared the wards. You are safe to apparate out of here.”
Harry offered Frank a grateful nod before saying, “I’m sorry about your grandparents, Frank.”
The teen wiped at his eyes which still had wet marks from the previous encounter before saying, “My family will get to the bottom of what happened tonight. That I can promise you, but go protect yours first, Harry, and be careful.”
Offering a final grateful nod Harry offered his arm to his companion, “Are you ready?”
“Let’s go.” She said with determination.
.o.
Arcturus Black was sipping on an aged scotch that he broke out on special occasions. He had become too old for the parties his friends, family, or allies held, and Melania had come accustomed to the smaller gatherings that didn’t raise the ruckus they enjoyed in their youth.
Taking a long sip, he took a sigh of content as the warm liquid gave him a satisfying chill. Glancing towards the clock he knew the New Year was coming and it was shaping up to be the best one in a long time. Charlus was back, and many of his old friends were coming together to prepare to crush a rising threat in their own backyard. It would be the last of his fighting years of that he was certain. He was likely already too old to be of such use, but when his mind went to thoughts of the Potter boy he nodded in content.
The boy was a powerhouse, and had fought him well on Christmas Day. He had also brought his best friend and sister back to the light of day and the Black Lord was grateful. The warnings the boy had brought were dire, but they had plenty of time to rectify the issues that had occurred in his time. If the boy could master the spells in the Black family grimoire he would be unstoppable.
‘Yes, that will do’ The man thought with a slight smile overtaking his features.
“What has you smiling this late, my love?” The voice of his wife said as she placed a soft hand on his shoulder.
“Things seemed grim for our house six months ago. I discovered a son of my house has run away due to one of my children being an incompetent parent and having a bitch for a wife.” The man blustered working himself into a fit until the woman squeezed his shoulder taking the wind out of his sails, “With Bellatrix marrying into the Lestrange family I only saw doom in that arrangement. Now Narcissa is wanting to lock herself to the Malfoy boy, which was displeasing in itself before I found out he was kissing the arse of this heir of Slytherin. Andromeda is rebelling at every turn, and Regulus is so far under his mother’s thumb that there is little hope of salvaging the boy. It was hard to think our house would rise above the coming challenges.”
Taking a long sip from his drink he then grinned slightly, “Then Alphard was hired at Hogwarts, Charlus came back into the fold, Harry stepped into the picture, and I think the boy is a good influence on Sirius. Perhaps he will make the boy see that the whole family is not like his mother. I am told that he has been getting on well with Alphard which is a bonus. It is good to see some of the men in this family taking a forward role. Even my brother, Pollux, has been writing more.”
“You should try and do something nice for Sirius and Harry, maybe even invite James Potter to do something fun. If we want to show the boys that we aren’t as foul as Walburga or as impassive as Orion, then we need to show them that we care.” The woman offered sagely.
Arcturus patted the hand that was resting on his shoulder after a moment of thought. He was hardly the sentimental type, but he wanted his family to know that he was there for him despite getting up there in age, “You’re absolutely right. I should take the boys to one of the beach properties in Italy. I can send the Elves to clean it up and we can all spend some time together. Perhaps then I can show Sirius that the family is not turning its back on him.”
“And what of Regulus?” The woman asked curiously.
“The boy is easily swayed. A new broomstick, a nice lunch, or tickets to a quidditch game, and he will be satisfied. I fear had I done that with Sirius when he was younger we never would’ve had the issues we face today. Never in my father’s time did anyone run away. I think I have been too lax in my position, something I vow to change in the coming New Year.”
The woman glanced towards the clock and smiled happily, “It will be the best year for our house in many years.”
Arcturus rose to his feet gleefully, but before he could begin to propose a toast he felt a shift in the wards. Three arrivals started his confusion and created a frown on his face, “Were we expecting company?”
Melaina frowned at the change of demeanor and glanced towards the door expectantly, “Not that I am aware of.”
Arcturus held his hand up for the woman to wait and his wand fell into his hands as he stepped out into the hallway to greet the unexpected guest. When he stepped out he let out a breath of relief, “Cygnus, Orion, to what do your mother and I owe the pleasure? Bella, is that you?”
The two sons of Arcturus Black stood tall as Bellatrix pushed her way to the front with a look of triumph on her face. Her black robes covered her back while the front seemed to be a leather sleeveless jacket. Regardless of the sleeveless jacket, she wore three-quarter sleeves that went down to her hands that seemed to be made of some type of armored material. Her dark hair was curled and styled to the perfection of a Pureblood Princess, but the look in her eyes was anything but innocent, “Hello grandfather, I carry a message from the Dark Lord.”
Arcturus frowned at the young woman, “Since when does a daughter of my house become a messenger? I thought I made myself clear that we were to remain neutral.”
Orion shrugged, “We heard you, but you didn’t even ask for the opinions of your family. You allowed the Potter brat to dictate your emotions.”
“Emotions stay out of negotiations. Something Harry did admirably. It is you who has allowed your judgment to be clouded by this man. This is irrelevant however, because I am the Lord of this house and have no need to consult with the rest of the family for their opinions. My word is the law in this family, regardless of the fact you have been given more freedom than I ever should’ve allowed.”
Orion remained impassive while Cygnus stepped forward, “More freedom? You limit our access to the family vaults, attempt to interfere in our children's lives, and now you wish to prevent us from allying with an heir to Slytherin that has the power you could scarcely dream of.”
“You think me a fool, boy? I have seen what real power looks like, and I know the type of corruption it can cause. I fought for this country in its hour of need and will be damned if anyone in my family supports a man that would bring civil war to our streets.” Arcturus all but roared at the man.
Bellatrix finally held her hand up silencing the two men beside her. Arcturus glanced warily at the trio now. Clearly, Bellatrix was tasked with delivering the message, but were his two children sent here to persuade or intimidate him?
Bella offered the man a smile, “We have come tonight to implore you to see reason. The Dark Lord would like another meeting. He believes as well as we do that you can be shown the error in your ways. My Lord is going to change the world with his power. He is going to wipe out the muggle filth, and put those of lesser blood beneath our heels where they belong.”
“I am your Lord.” Arcturus seethed, “I am the Lord of this house. I am the Lord that pays for everything in this family. The Lord that would keep you from harm if any dared to lift a finger in your direction. All of you. This nonsense with that imposter Heir of Slytherin is at an end.”
Bella slowly drew her wand making the man tense as she waved it across one of her sleeves making it unravel until a mark with a skull that had a serpent coming out of its head was displayed. Slowly the two men behind her did the same revealing the same symbol on their forearms.
His heart dropped as he realized what was coming, and her words all but confirmed it, “We have taken our vows to a new lord. I can swear to you that you will be given a high position in the Dark Lord ranks. You will be rewarded above all the others for seeing his way of things.”
The woman’s voice was attempting to be seductive as she inched towards the man, and it did nothing, but disgust the man as he stepped forward with a dangerous tone in his voice, “Listen to me. All three of you. I don’t care what shit this man shoveled to you. I don’t care what promises were made. You will renounce this bastard. You will not bow your head to any man. I didn’t bow to Grindelwald, and I sure won’t bow to any other little shit that dares to breathe down my neck.”
Bellatrix was fuming as he spoke and her wand sparked dangerously, “You are making a big mistake, grandfather. We wanted you to see things our way, but if you refuse, if you continue to be stubborn, we will-”
“You will what?” The man questioned dangerously, finally pointing his wand in the direction of his granddaughter.
The two men behind the dark-haired young woman stirred in discomfort while she licked her lips in anticipation, “Find a new Lord Black that will listen.”
Resolving himself to what would happen next he seethed out, “I will have all three of you cast out of the family before the night is over. There will be no Lord Black among you three.”
Bellatrix finally smiled again, “I had hoped you would see it that way.”
His eyes widened as the woman flashed her wand in his direction and a jet of green light came sailing towards him. Without thought of the consequences, Arcturus conjured dozens of black moths intercepting the curse, before he was hit with an impact curse that sent him flying backward through a wall.
The pain of such an impact caused him to groan. In his younger years he’d have bounced back with no issue, but approaching 80 meant his body ached as he found himself back on his feet. The screams of his wife forced him to find the strength to get back into the fight. As he inched his way back towards the hallway he heard Bella berating her father, “Kill him! He could use the wards to rip us apart.”
The thought was certainly crossing his mind at the time, but he needed to know both of his sons were equally complacent in this thought. Orion had always been the least outspoken in the family. He did not wish to kill his children and grandchild if it could be avoided. If he could get word out for help perhaps things could be different.
Taking a deep breath he focused on his magic, deciding he would be brutal and efficient, but he could not bring himself to kill his family. He would incapacitate them if possible.
With quick flicks of his wrist, he summoned the moths once again and transfigured them into small blades that he came around the corner launching at his family. Bellatrix easily deflected them into the wall and Orion and Cygnus attempted to fire an assortment of curses at him, but easily he weaved them around and returned fire while caving the ceiling above them. This caused the trio to scatter and Arcturus launched a spell at Orion causing him to scream in fear as the illusionary magic took hold.
Bellatrix and Cygnus however didn't allow him one second longer to take down another as they barraged him with spellfire.
.o.
Charlus and Dorea arrived side by side with wands in hand outside of Grimmauld Place to find quite the scene. The neighborhood was on fire. Muggles were running in the streets and screams of agony filled the air. Dorea gripped the man’s arm tightly, “Charlus…what do we do?”
Gritting his teeth he shook his head, “We get to Arcturus first, and then we mitigate damage to the best of our ability. I need you to get us through the wards.”
Nodding her head she began to move forward as she whipped her wand in tight circles adjusting her outfit for the fight ahead while Charlus did the same to his trousers as he shed his cloak off into the street allowing the brisk winter air to rejuvenate him. His heart was pounding as he thought about the fate that may befall his brother if they didn’t act quickly.
Moving towards the entrance to the house half the block was on fire with people attempting to escape the inferno, and their path was soon blocked by six men who arrived in a puff of dark smoke that came from the sky. Five of the men were in black robes with silver masks while the leader wore no mask, and instead displayed a sinister smile with red eyes bearing down on the arriving war vets.
Charlus didn’t hesitate, “If you know what’s good for you, and you wish to see the sunrise tomorrow you will leave immediately.”
“Now, now, Mr. Potter, we should not intrude on family business.” The man with no mask chided.
Dorea spat out with her wand in hand sparking dangerously, “That is my brother in there. He is my family.”
“A family you ignored for so many years.” The man said patronizingly.
The woman was now gripping her wand so tight her knuckles were white. A blast from the house had both arrivals gasping and Voldemort chuckled, “Ah that would be Bella. She is a fine witch. I trust she and her grandfather will work out their differences…or they won’t.”
This made the gathered men laugh while Charlus pointed his wand forward making the death eaters scramble for their wands as he called out, “Final warning. Move or die.”
“I am done with warnings.” The usually soft woman said as she launched her wand forward with a surge of water she conjured while Charlus electrified it and then summoned a gate to intercept several spells that rained down on them at once. The spells blew the gate to pieces, but Dorea was ready with a shield as Charlus swirled his wand around transfiguring the rubble into various swaths of destruction, and hurled them at his enemy.
Voldemort moved to engage the couple, but before he could, spells began coming from down the street taking out two Death Eaters on impact, and causing Voldemort himself to shield his other three followers.
Harry and Elaina were sprinting down the street throwing massive blasting curses in conjunction not giving the man a moment to breathe. Charlus didn’t look the gift horse in the mouth as he pointed his wand toward the ground and with a mighty pull yanked the concrete up causing the world to shake as he paved a path of destruction.
Before the destruction arrived Voldemort held his wand close to his free hand creating a ball of dark energy before throwing his arms out at the same time causing a shock wave to send his four attackers back with no hope of shielding.
The man laughed as he surveyed the scene barking orders at his remaining followers, “Go inside and help Bella finish this. The Aurors will not be delayed forever.”
The Potters and Elaina had found their way back to their feet however and were all looking furious over what had transpired as the man held out his arms in mock welcome greeting, “I have heard so much about this family's prowess. You killed my faithful followers tonight, as well as that night in Godric’s Hollow, and on the Quidditch pitch at Hogwarts. All of this has been for you. Poor Harfang Longbottom and Arcturus Black were just casualties in my path to bring us all here together. There will be no running tonight.”
Harry felt the wards go up and his stomach sank. Charlus however glared at the man before turning his head slightly towards his wife, “Dorea, take Elaina inside and get your brother and his wife out of here. Harry and I will deal with this.”
Dorea looked fearfully between her husband and her son, but another explosion from inside the house propelled her forward, dragging Elaina by the arm as they charged into the house. Voldemort for his part didn’t even bother with looking at the departing females as he stared at the two men before him.
“Harry, Harry, Harry, you could’ve been a powerful ally to my cause. Unfortunately, you have upset many of my followers and killed more than I am willing to forgive even if you hadn’t. I am afraid your story ends here. Fear not though, I will do my best to make the rest of your family see reason before I have to make them meet the same sticky end.”
Charlus scoffed, “No Potter will ever join you. When my son and I kill you here tonight we will hunt down the rest of your followers and make sure they share your fate. You should never have stepped out of your hiding hole, Tom Riddle.”
Voldemort seethed at his birth name and began the fight by hurling nearby debris towards the Potter men causing them to go on the defensive.
.o.
When Dorea and Elaina entered the house it was to unfriendly spellfire trying to clog up the door. Thankfully Elaina was quick with a shield and Dorea launched a black curse at the closest masked man causing him to wail in agony as he dropped to the ground writhing in pain.
This allowed the witches to push into the doorway and realized the state of the house was irrecoverable. Much of the ceiling had caved in, and parts of the house were on fire. Had they not immediately been barraged with spellfire Dorea would have been hurt over the destruction of her childhood home. That however was not an option as a dark red curse that could only be the torture curse was heading towards Elaina. The Black daughter however pulled some of the debris to intercept the curse while Elaina set the wreckage on fire and pushed it back to their attacker with a spin. The witches then both sent blasting curses that impacted the cloaked man allowing them to swarm the remaining attacker with a series of curses few would have kept up with.
With quick waves of her wand, Dorea began restoring the house around her in hopes of getting to the sounds of spellfire that came from the other side of the kitchen. The task was arduous but the scream of her brother spurred her forward.
This was unlike the battle at Godric’s Hollow. They had expected them this time. Prepared for them. Divided their forces so they could not stand together. The Death Eaters were learning, but she had to get to her brother. She would stop his attackers, and get them to Potter Manor before returning to fight with her son and husband.
The witch beside her wasn’t even hesitating to follow her every move as they weaved through the crumbling house. Elaina had been unshakable and despite her questionable past Dorea had come to trust the girl quickly. Being an empath gave her the ability to sense certain things, and knowing the young woman beside her was honorable was one of those things.
A wave of betrayal hit her suddenly when they came into the long hallway that would lead to her brother's office. A cackle of glee was heard in a feminine voice, while she cried, “Grandma, wants to play? Run while you still can from ickle Bella!”
Dorea’s stomach dropped, Bellatrix? Voldemort had said this was a family matter, but she didn’t understand initially. Dorea had guessed that the Death Eaters had found some way to breach the wards by some miracle, but now realization swept over her.
Firmly Dorea said, “Watch our backs. I will deal with this.”
The witch had a furious tone that left no question in her voice. Dorea stalked forward into the study where Melania Black was overcome with a gleeful Bellatrix cursing her as the room crumbled around them. To her left was the body of Cygnus Black, and a comatose Orion Black. Surely they had not been involved in this madness?
“Bellatrix, enough!” Dorea barked out causing the younger woman to freeze as Melania collapsed in exhaustion.
Slowly the dark-haired girl turned to face her aunt, and grinned, “Hello auntie, it seems my lord was right that all of you would run to your Lord Black’s aid.”
Arcturus was on the ground twitching and moaning with his eyes rolled back into his head trying to find the strength to get up. Dorea recognized the effects of the Cruciatus curse and immediately spat out, “Our Lord Black you daft girl. You get one chance. Drop your wand, or I will kill you.”
Bellatrix seemed gleeful by the offer as she now raised her wand to the woman, but Dorea didn’t hesitate as she blasted the girl through the wall caving in the next room. The usually soft-spoken and kind woman was gone, and in her place stood the woman that killed Ivonne Rosier in the Great War.
Calling out over her shoulder to her backup Elaina came into the room looking ready for anything as the older woman commanded her, “Get my family to safety. I will see to it that you are not ambushed in your escape. Go out the back door to the kitchen and you will be able to apparate.”
Elaina swallowed heavily, “I can’t apparate all three of us, Dorea.”
The woman nodded thinking quickly as she watched the wall carefully that Bellatrix had been banished through. Summoning a book from nearby she turned it into a portkey and tossed it to Elaina who fumbled it in her hands before nodding gratefully as she put an arm around a sobbing Melania Black and cast the levitation charm on Arcturus carefully trying to get him out while Dorea began putting the room back together to prevent the house from coming down on top of them.
No sooner had Elaina made it out of the room did the wall that Bellatrix had previously been banished through exploded forcing Dorea to shield herself from debris and slap away a purple curse she recognized as her family's magic. Bellatrix was standing there fuming with rage as she glared hatefully at the woman before her, “Where is she taking them?”
“It doesn’t matter. You won’t get to them.” Dorea said calmly.
With a cry of frustration, Bellatrix launched a wide range of spells towards Dorea, which she shielded, dodged, and deflected. The girl was good, but Dorea had been training for a confrontation such as this. She remembered Harry telling her about how powerful Bellatrix was in his time, but it was clear the girl was still in the early stages of her training with Voldemort, because she dueled with her emotions and rage instead of her head.
Dorea was having little trouble deflecting or dismantling the girl's magic, but her speed was her greatest ally. It was a speed that Dorea had trouble slipping spells into, but before things could get heated the house was blasted apart and debris sent Dorea flying into a nearby wall.
.o.
Fighting this Voldemort was very different from the fight he had experienced in the graveyard, or even the fight he witnessed between the Headmaster and the Dark Lord. This Voldemort was fast, methodical, and destructive. This Voldemort was not having to adjust to a new body, or a soul that was split seven times. This was the Dark Lord that everyone had feared to the point that his name had become taboo long after he was gone.
While those thoughts may have been true, Charlus was proving he was every bit as capable of dueling the man to a standstill, and with Harry’s assistance the duo had managed to make the man work for every inch of ground he attempted to win.
The block had been leveled at this point. Muggle first responders would take hours to get through with the amount of destruction they had caused in the duel. Harry had attempted to save the lives of the Muggles, but Voldemort demanded his full attention. The destruction they were causing with their duel was unavoidable if they wished to survive and the lives lost in the crossfire were horrific. If there were any survivors by the time this was over the department of magical catastrophes was about to have a very long few days, as well as the Obliviators.
Voldemort had displayed magic neither Potter had ever seen before and the men had worked together admirably to disarm every attempt the man made to lay waste to the surrounding area.
When Voldemort laughed and created a massive golem of fire Harry knew they were in trouble. Something like this could destroy the borough of Islington if they couldn’t contain it. Charlus however roared out to Harry, “I will contain the fire, kill him!”
Seeing the battle of wills begin as Charlus attempted to wrestle with the fiendfyre controlled by Voldemort, Harry took a deep breath and leveled his wand with the Dark Lord who had his red eyes on him. Harry reared back to deal a devastating blow to the man, but before he could he felt an invasion of his mind, and he screamed out in pain as the man attempted to lance his mind with legilimency.
Quickly he tried to cover up visions of his past, but the memory from the wedding was fresh on his mind. Then the battle of Malfoy Manor. Then the fighting on the grounds of Hogwarts. Memories of violence swirled before his eyes as the Dark Lord attempted to unhinge him, but before he could get too far he felt the man exit his mind and when he opened his eyes he held his head with one hand as he attempted to push himself to his feet.
Charlus was standing over him protectively with his wand pointed at the surprised Voldemort. The cursed fire was gone, and Harry was uncertain how long the man had been in his mind. The Dark Lord continued to stare at Harry, before a twisted smile crossed his face, “Oh the secrets you carry my boy. A rare gift you possess to see the future. I will take so much from you. I see why you oppose me now, but if you think what you have seen is bad, then I assure you I am now capable of much worse.”
“We can’t let him escape.” Harry said in a panic as he stumbled to his feet.
“Wait, Harry!” Charlus said, making the boy lower his wand as the wards lowered around them and dozens of pops went through the area.
The Aurors had arrived, but to no surprise Voldemort did not flee. He merely offered a bow of his head to Charlus who held his wand firmly in hand preparing to attack. An Auror that Harry instantly recognized as Alastor Moody cast the sonorus charm announcing, “Wand down and hands where we can see them.”
Voldemort chuckled as he reversed the Auror’s charm and cast one for himself, “Aurors, I plead with you all now to leave from this incident. The Potters and I have unfinished business, and I am afraid if you are not with me then you will be against me. I am afraid Lord Black and Longbottom found that out the hard way this evening.”
Moody looked feral as he attempted to shout, but had seemingly lost the ability to do so. Voldemort continued to eye Harry as he called out, “I can see why your parents would hide you from me, boy. With those gifts at your disposal, you are almost too valuable for me to kill. For that reason, I offer you all one final night of peace. Bury your friends and family. My followers and I have shown the wizarding world what happens when you stand in our way. I AM LORD VOLDEMORT, and I am the Heir of Slytherin. When you speak my name, say it with fear. When you speak my name, know my followers will come for you. Stand against me, and die.”
With that, the man cast a spell into the air causing the dark mark to appear and disappeared before the Aurors could even throw a spell.
Dreams of Home Chapter 41
Chapter 41
The days after Christmas had been some of the best of his life. Harry’s parents had taken Elaina with the family to Paris for two days, and it had been one of the most magical experiences of Harry’s life. The Montmartre made Diagon Alley look poor and rugged in comparison, and the sheer size of the French Magical Wizarding District was something to behold.
Harry and Elaina had been guided by a woman that the youngest Potter was familiar with from the memory of his parents' wedding. Alexandra Dupont was quite the excitable character, and she had nearly shattered Harry’s eardrums with the excited screech she let out when the Potters arrived at her home outside of Paris city limits. Dorea had told Harry that Alexandra had been one of the few whose company they shared over their years of isolation, so had confided in the Veela about Harry’s true nature.
The woman had been very excited to meet Harry and was pleased to know her aura didn’t affect him in the slightest. Harry had come to enjoy the woman’s company and had laughed at the discomfort she had caused his father repeatedly throughout their visit. It had become evident that at one point the French Veela had carried quite the torch for his mother, and had joked with Charlus that he had better be treating his wife well or she would do it for him!
The food had been amazing, the sights were beautiful, and they had even been given a chance to watch some professional dueling one evening in the Palais De Champions. Needless to say, Elaina and Harry had been impressed by the speed of the highest-level athletes, but were not so impressed with their overall magical abilities. Of course, on a dueling platform, you could only do so much, but they were both fascinated by the creativity of the duelist. It led to many discussions between the two on how they would evolve her game to be successful after they graduated.
Talks of visiting America were discussed after the New Year, and after their taste of magical France, the two teens were ecstatic about the possibilities.
Paris wasn’t the only blessing Harry had been given over the holidays. It seemed that Harry and James had broken the ice with the exchanging of gifts and while the two definitely had some awkward tension between them for now the time-traveler was just going to leave it be. Instead of going to Charlus with advice, Harry had decided to approach Fleamont. Figuring no one would know how to deal with the young man better than his father, Harry had found himself in Godric’s Hollow on New Years Eve having lunch with his paternal grandparents while James and Sirius were out with the other Marauders.
Monty and Mia Potter had been ecstatic to have their grandson for an afternoon and Harry had saved the purpose for his visit until the end so he could enjoy stories of his father growing up, and even learn a little about his great grandfather William Potter. The man was a touchy subject as he had been killed by Grindelwald in the Great-War which was what drew Charlus into the fighting, but the stories were fascinating. Harry had learned that the two had good relationships with their father, and that their mother had died giving birth to Charlus himself. Not for the first time, Harry had to wonder if his family was cursed, but let it lie in his thoughts without mention.
Eventually, Harry knew his time to return home to prepare for their evening at Longbottom Manor was coming and decided to broach the subject. Asking the man to take a walk with him around the block led to an understanding look and the two began treading through the soft snow. Harry pondered for a long moment how he would broach the conversation when Monty chuckled, “Take a breath, Harry. I know you must have questions about that son of mine. As pleased as Mia and I were to have you this afternoon, we have spent enough time around the Marauders to recognize a teenager with a lot on their mind. Tell me what troubles you son.”
“It’s James,” Harry started, “I am having a hard time understanding him. He sounded so prepared to commit to training with me and learning to protect himself after our Quidditch match, but then he started ignoring me for the rest of the term, or making excuses. I guess I am just having a hard time seeing this James Potter as the one who sacrificed himself for his wife and son.”
Fleamont nodded in understanding, seemingly contemplating his answer, “I fear some of the blame lies with your grandmother and I. We have doted on James his entire life, and he has hardly known what a day of hard work looks like off a Quidditch Pitch. I don’t know what happened to my boy in your time that made him into the man he was, but I have little doubt that if James had his back against the wall he would rise to the occasion. Our world is seeing the signs of a coming conflict, but we have for years. Only recently have things progressed to a tipping point that could indicate true war in our world. These flashes of determination James is having I truly believe is a good sign, but I fear what it will take to truly drive him into action.”
“I want him to be ready for what is to come, grandpa.” Harry confided, making the man smile at his title, “I don’t want James to be doomed to the same fate that awaited him in my time.”
The village was quiet this time in the afternoon. Undoubtedly the town was preparing for the evening's festivities and resting until the time came. The moment reminded him very much of his time with Fleamont Potter at King’s Cross before he was sent back in time. The silence was near eerie and the man seemed to deeply contemplate his grandson's words. Taking a deep breath the man let his face drop, “All Potters are very stubborn, very proud people, Harry, I suspect you are beginning to understand that. No one can force James into what needs to be done. If we tried he would just rebuke us. You came for my advice and the best I can give is to wait. I know it probably is not what you were hoping to hear, but I believe it is the only choice for now. If it is how you believe it will be then it is only a matter of time before his hand is forced into action. Then he will come to you. With a mindset of whatever it takes. That is the James Potter you want training with you, Harry. Not one that doesn’t truly understand what he is going to be fighting for.”
Harry had suspected this was the truth, but he needed another opinion. An opinion that knows what fate currently awaits the man if nothing is done. He couldn’t live with the guilt of what could happen to his biological father if he didn’t take every logical step to prevent it. A hand on his shoulder broke him out of his thoughts and he realized the two had made a small lap around the village in silence returning them to the front of the house that would be razed to the ground in 1981. Fleamont offered him a smile, “Harry, it may not feel like it, but your arrival here has made a great deal of difference. The way I understand it, Rudolphus Lestrange did a great deal of harm in your time, and that is a threat you neutralized. You have also spurred me in my duties as Lord Potter to take a more active stance, and for the first time in hundreds of years, we are in true alliance with the House Black even though the rest of the Wizarding World does not yet know it. My brother and sister-in-law are also returning to the fold. Harry, I truly believe with just what you have done so far you will have made a huge difference.”
Or I could have pushed my family to annihilation faster, Harry thought morbidly. He did however not voice these thoughts as he offered his grandfather a weak smile and returned the embrace that was offered to him.
When they re-entered the cottage Harry was surprised to see Sirius and James lounging around. He was immediately grateful the two had gone for a walk to have their discussion and greeted his friends with forced optimism, “Padfoot, Prongs, excited for the party tonight?”
James grinned at his cousin and elbowed Sirius gently, “I think Padfoot is excited to have another opportunity to woo Marlene. She has seemed more receptive to his charms since you broke her heart, Harry.”
“Thanks for that, mate!” Sirius exclaimed happily.
Harry rolled his eyes and Euphemia pursed her lips at the boys and turned to her grandson with a look of disapproval on her face, “I hope you are not leading on Ms. Essex and breaking young girls' hearts, Harry Arcturus Potter.”
James whistled, “All three names, rough luck, mate.”
Rolling his eyes Harry shook his head, “Of course I’m not. Marlene was a massive misunderstanding followed by the typical Potter luck.”
“Notice he didn’t mention anything about the bird staying in his house.” Sirius said with a suggestive tone.
“And on that note, I’m going home to get ready. I will see you all tonight at Longbottom Manor. Thanks for lunch Auntie.” Harry said, offering the woman a smile and offering the closest thing he had to a grandfather a nod before apparating home.
.o.
Harry had chosen to relax for the remainder of the afternoon when he returned home to Potter Manor. With Dorea and Elaina out dress shopping for the evening he was largely left to his own devices as he sipped on a glass of firewhiskey with Charlus as the afternoon faded away. The women had spent the early evening getting ready while Harry had dawned on some formal dress robes for someone of his station. Thankfully he was not the heir to the family so his dress code was a little less formal than what would be expected of James and Sirius, but still, he found the tradition a little tedious.
The tedious nature of the dress code didn’t turn down the excitement of the event in the slightest, something that became apparent to Harry from the moment his family arrived. It was clear the Longbottoms spared no expense. A dozen house elves in professional attire were seen levitating platters of food and drinks around the large entryway to the home. Elaina whistled quietly and spoke softly enough for only Harry to hear, “I thought Potter Manor was extravagant, this is amazing.”
Nodding his head in agreement Harry allowed the girl to loop her arm into his as they stepped away from the Floo Network they had arrived in. The entryway had a line of fireplaces that would allow half a dozen guests to arrive at a time. The entryway could also comfortably fit fifty people without a second thought. Nice portraits, and beautiful art also lined the walls of the high ceilings with a chandelier that could’ve easily cost thousands of galleons. Looking out a nearby window also indicated to Harry that the grounds of Longbottom Manor were easily as large as Potter Manor.
Before Harry could comment on the house a feminine voice called out to him, “Harry, Elaina, welcome to Longbottom Manor!”
Turning his head slightly Harry took in the face of Alice Fortescue, who had a huge smile for her arriving friends who had no choice but to accept her hug as she threw both arms around them. Elaina chuckled, “Frank put you on the greeting team?”
When she separated from the pair she offered her left hand dramatically, “Well Augusta thought since I am going to be a member of the family, and have spent enough time in their home over the last year that I should be put to good use!”
Harry observed a ring with a rather impressive-sized diamond attached to it and he whistled appreciatively, “Wow, congratulations Alice.”
“You will both of course be invited to our wedding. Hopefully attending together?” Alice teased.
Elaina for her part merely smiled, “We would love to come, Alice. We will look for Frank so we can congratulate him as well.”
Harry wanted to chuckle at the look of surprise on the young woman’s face, but she merely flicked her wrist behind her, “Frank is with Lord Longbottom in the formal living area. I am sure he would love an excuse to get away and talk about something other than this party.”
Taking the casual dismissal for what it was, Harry and Elaina stepped aside to stand with Charlus and Dorea who were being swarmed in greeting by many in the hall. It was the first time the couple appeared together outside of the Hogwarts region since the death of their oldest son, and the return was triumphant as Dorea pulled her son and Elaina into the gathering introducing them to so many names and faces Harry could not possibly remember all of them.
In time the family was allowed to pass and the older Potters seemed to be in high spirits as they moved into the formal living area where another large gathering of people was found. Harry spotted familiar faces from all around the room from Hogwarts. He even recognized a few from the Wizengamot memories he had seen from Charlus.
Harry had led Elaina beside his family to meet with a man who was using a cane to keep himself up straight yet still managed to look stout and imposing. He had met this man at the Black family meeting and watched respectfully as Harfangs face lit up at the sight of Harry’s parents and he quickly moved to embrace each of them, “Charlus and Dorea Potter, it has been too damn long since you have both graced these halls. Welcome back, old friends.”
When the man finished his embrace, Dorea provided introductions, “It is good to be back, Harfang. I am sure you remember my son, Harry, and this young lady is Elaina Essex, she is the young woman that is under the protection of House Potter.”
Harfang’s eyes scanned over both of them analytically before offering Harry his hand with a grin, “Now here is the chip right off the old block. Sorry, we didn’t get a chance for a proper introduction last time lad. You know them Blacks can be right messy to deal with, and it wasn’t my place. I usually let my wife do most of the talking in those situations.”
“Because he has gained some wisdom in his older years.” An elderly woman chimed in as she offered the Longbottom Lord a drink.
Harry recognized the woman as Callidora Longbottom Nee Black and he offered her a short bow, “Lady Longbottom.”
Elaina copied Harry’s action, but said nothing as the woman pursed her lips, “Ah my mystery relative. I was wondering if you would be coming out of hiding tonight.”
Harry felt the hand of Elaina clench his arm tightly, but he kept his features schooled, “I assure you Lady Longbottom I have not had to hide from the world for many years now. My parents kept me in solitude because the Potter family has many enemies lurking in the shadows that would attempt to do us harm if they thought us vulnerable. We were merely avoiding violence before, something you may have noticed is no longer the case after what happened in Godric's Hollow back in November.”
“Oh, how I wish I had been there.” Harfang bemoaned, “I haven’t had a good fight in over thirty years. My grandson tells me you are a sight to behold with a wand just like your daddy. I was given a chance to witness some of that on Hogwarts grounds just a month ago. The Lestranges are a dangerous sort, and I was very impressed by your ability to throw off the Cruciatus curse. Truly!”
“I am my parents' son, Lord Longbottom.” Harry offered with a smile.
The man nodded his head, “I believe you, lad. You keep working with that grandson of mine, Potter’s and Longbottoms have been fighting side by side for centuries on the winning side of each conflict we arrive in. When I heard your grandfather was enlisting in the Great War, I was right behind him. I was also damn proud to follow his son when he had arrived to replace him.”
Callidora rolled her eyes, “The fighting is over now though, Harfang. Nothing but a bunch of upstarts trying to stir up trouble now.”
Shaking his head Harry immediately protested, “Lady Longbottom I assure you this Voldemort wizard is much more than a simple upstart. His legacy is already being written in blood, and it is only the beginning.”
Dismissively the woman waved her hand, “He is already being shunned by the Blacks, Potters, and Longbottom’s. He will have nothing but the shoulders of minor families that barely qualify as Purebloods to stand on.”
Harfang mumbled, “He even had the nerve to use my old friendship with Mikew Yaxley to set up a meeting with me. I insisted that my family would never take part in the violence I believed his cause would create, and something told me he was displeased with my answer.”
Dorea glanced at Harry as the boy stiffened. Charlus had a morbid look of curiosity on his face however as he asked, “What did he say?”
Harfang snorted, “Said that he hoped I would rethink my options, because he would hate to see me on the wrong side of history. I thought he would curse me when I told him that I looked forward to opposing him on the Wizengamot. ”
Harry felt his stomach drop at the words. He no longer had to wonder why so many of the Longbottoms had been killed in his time. If this was similar to how the meeting went in his time, then Voldemort would have made it his mission to see the family eradicated.
“It is only a matter of time before a wizard of his caliber begins removing obstacles that stand in his way.” Elaina said carefully, “History is littered with powerful witches and wizards who have adopted similar tactics. I watched this man stand up to Charlus and Harry without a hint of trepidation. He goaded them into a fight after we had decimated his followers in combat. Any wizard with that sort of confidence is dangerous.”
All eyes in the group went to Elaina who looked suddenly uncomfortable by the attention. Harry for his part felt his stomach turn a bit at her words as the horrible feeling increased. He knew she was right, and how long was it before Voldemort began attacking families that stood against him one at a time?
“What would a silly little Mud-, Muggleborn girl know about wizards of a war mages caliber?” The woman said coldly.
It was not missed by anyone in the gathered group the slip-up, and Dorea coldly cut the woman with her tone, “I would trust she has a bit more experience than you in that field, Calliorda. Elaina has been spending her holiday training with Charlus and I. She has now had a taste of battle at our side, and now had a chance to see what it is like when a war mage is standing opposite of you. Something I am quite confident you have never experienced, cousin.”
Callidora looked like she would rebuttal with something viscous, but Harfang broke it off with a chuckle, “Relax ladies. A new year is coming out, and friends are getting a chance to catch up after many years of being apart. You Black women are just as vicious as the next, even with each other!”
The Lord of the house then turned his attention back to Elaina, “You must be the lass that the young lad here killed for?”
Elaina nodded stiffly and seemed to tense under the question, while Harfang merely grinned at the girl, “I certainly see why my new friend here took umbrage to those bastards attacking you. Especially after he went through the trouble of getting you placed under the protection of the Potter family. I doubt anyone will be so keen to try it again.”
Turning his attention to Charlus the man questioned with a frown, “What do you think of your charge’s thoughts, old friend? Is this Voldemort character a bigger problem than the Wizengamot is leading us to believe?”
“You have known me long enough to know that I would not have called my son to a battlefield if I thought he was not needed.” Charlus said without hesitation, “I believe Ms. Essex is correct. This Voldemort would not have approached a wizard of my reputation so confidently if he was not supremely talented. We have not yet seen whether that confidence is unfounded or not.”
Huffing Harfang pulled a pipe from his sleeve and took several puffs as his wife rolled her eyes and stormed off, “You’ve given me a lot to think on, but let’s not give it anymore thought tonight. Let us reminisce and make plans for the coming year. You will not let a whole year pass before we gather again.”
“I wouldn’t dream of it.” Charlus offered kindly to his friend, before turning to Harry, “You two go link up with some people closer to your age and get up to some trouble. Those are my standing orders.”
Harry grinned at his dad while Dorea scolded the man, but the grin on her lips told Harry all he needed to know as it finally replaced the scowl that had been left on her face by Callidora. Harry didn’t hesitate at the invitation to depart the older couple's company and dragged Elaina off towards their friends who were gathering in a circle that was seemingly increasing in size.
When the group approached Sirius greeted the pair first, “Uh Oh, Potter, I’ve been in enough dog houses to know you’ve landed yourself in one. What happened? Not enough snogging?”
Harry rolled his eyes at the boy before saying, “Just a run-in with one of our family members. Frank, let’s just say your grandmother likely won’t be too pleased to see us at your wedding.”
The boys guffawed while Elaina huffed in annoyance, “She nearly called me a Mudblood, real charming woman.”
Frank wasn’t laughing anymore, and sighed, “Sorry about her, Elaina. I assure you no one else in my family holds those types of prejudice, and I don’t think she does either. She was just raised a Black, and as you likely know most of that family is quite…”
“Psychotic.” Harry and Sirius offered at the same time.
Frank nodded in acceptance saying not looking apologetic, “Their words, not mine.”
James, Remus, and some of the other boys Harry recognized from the Gryffindor Quidditch team laughed at the words. Lily for her part shook her head and came to embrace the pair together while she dragged Elaina away so they could talk about all the intricacies of Wizarding Paris which seemed to instantly lighten the dark-haired girl's mood.
When Harry was left behind he offered Frank a grin, “Love the house, Longbottom. Do you actually live here with your parents?”
“Not usually, but we are here a lot. Mum and dad are actually out of the country right now visiting friends in Nepal. They travel a lot, so I spend lots of time with my grandparents and other relatives who often pass through here.” Frank explained and even pointed out a few of his relatives, “My uncle Algie just passed his final year of training to become a full Unspeakable for the Department of Mysteries. My Aunt Samantha is a widow, but she works with dragons in Ukraine. She apprenticed under Professor Kettleburn. I have twin Uncle’s running around here. They both play Quidditch professionally for the Tornadoes and United, Chasers, the pair of them which is how I became such a good Keeper.”
Frank went on to point out more family, and Harry began to fidget under each of the names. He now understood why Arcturus and Charlus had reacted the way they had when he had told them that Neville and Augusta were the last of the Longbottoms by the time he had been killed. All these people…had they been hunted down by the Death Eaters? Harfang himself had said that Potter’s and Longbottoms’ fought together, but how many had fought with the Order of the Phoenix?
There was so much history Harry wasn’t sure of that he deeply regretted now not having a chance to speak with Neville more about his other family members.
“You alright there, Harry? You look like you have seen a ghost.” Frank said, looking concerned at his friend.
Shaking his head he tried to offer a smile, “Sorry Frank, I guess I am just not used to such big families. You know how few us Potters are.”
Looking embarrassed now Frank scratched the back of his head, “Of course. Sorry about that, Harry. It’s easy to get carried away once I start on my family. I just love all of them, you know?”
Harry heard the man’s words and looked over to Sirius who put his arm around Marlene McKinnon who looked receptive to his advances for the first time. Then his eyes shifted to James offering Lily and Elaina each a glass of champagne with a small smile on his face, while both witches thanked him. Nodding his head Harry merely nodded, “I do know what you mean.”
Frank patted the boy on the shoulder and Alice came around at the same time as a soft song came on the wireless that was playing in the room, “Sorry Harry, I need to steal my fiance.”
“Get a drink, we will catch up more later, Harry!” Frank called out over his shoulder.
Harry grinned as Alice dragged her fiance to the dance floor who was looking quite pleased for himself. Moving towards the table to find Remus alone Harry bumped the man gently with his elbow to signal his arrival, “Lots of pretty witches here Remus. Shouldn’t you be trying to start a pack?”
Remus grumbled, but a grin tugged at the corner of his mouth, “Not funny, Harry.”
Chuckling Harry looked around and asked, “Where is our missing Marauder?”
Remus answered the question softly, “He was feeling under the weather, but he might be coming later.”
Harry knew the man was coming off a full moon from a few nights prior and offered him a pat on the back as he tried not to contemplate Wormtail's absence, “Well I am glad you are here Moony, someone has to help me keep these two in line.”
As Harry said this he watched as Sirius put his arm around Marlene McKinnon who looked receptive to his advances for the first time as she offered the dark-haired boy an amused look. The smile on the young man’s face was one Harry was unfamiliar with, and was surprised to see the affection in his eyes for the young woman. Perhaps his feelings were beyond what Harry had originally guessed.
His glance then moved to Elaina and Lily, who were sipping on their glasses of champagne with James. The three were all smiling, and Harry felt his heart speed up at the sight of his family being so happy, “I am glad you are here as well, Harry. James is too.”
Questioningly, Harry looked to Remus who shook his head slightly, “You two are more alike than you know. I see the amount of content you feel just being here with your family and friends. After your years in isolation, you just have a deeper appreciation for the little things than the rest of us do…something I have come to understand better than perhaps the others.”
Nodding his head in agreement Harry patted the young man on the back. He looked so much younger and more care-free than the man he knew and respected in his time. Remus had been questionable in his time as a father, but as a mentor and friend he was unwavering. A shoulder to lean on when he was left with nothing, “I know you get it Remus. A New Year is coming though, and there is a bright future ahead…for all of us.”
Remus sighed deeply, “I hope you’re right, Harry. My condition may make it difficult-”
“Difficult.” Harry agreed, “Not impossible. Not with all of us behind you, and don’t forget, we are all behind you. As your friend, as a Marauder, and as family.”
Seeming to resonate gratitude Remus just offered Harry a grin, “You’re not going to cry are you?”
This made Harry immediately burst with laughter drawing the eyes of those around him. Trying to silence his laugh with a sip of his drink he felt like his heart was full. Seeing this side of Remus was a gift, and he was grateful to see the lighter side of the Marauder that he had only heard stories of from Sirius in his time.
A soft song began to play and Remus bumped Harry as he gestured his head towards Elaina who had been left alone as the others took to the dance floor with different partners, “Better get a move on mate. If you don’t I might.”
Chuckling, Harry handed the boy his drink and nodded in agreement as he approached the girl. The green and blue eyes of the girl looked questioningly at him as he approached and he merely bowed, offering his hand with a mischievous grin on his face. Turning red the girl said, “Harry, I really don’t know how to dance.”
“You danced with me on Christmas Eve.” He countered.
“If you can call it that.” She grumbled taking his hand with defeat in her tone, but a happy look on her countenance.
The two danced back and forth slowly swaying to the music, keeping it as basic as possible. As they stepped around Harry caught sight of his parents looking at the pair with a smile and he groaned quietly, “I can already hear my mom's voice in my head about how cute we are.”
Chuckling the girl moved him slightly so she could see what he saw and shook her head, “This was all your doing.”
“I couldn’t have you feeling left out after all the other girls were being swept onto the dance floor. What kind of friend would I be?” Harry asked in faux outrage.
“One that would get teased a lot less.” She answered in amusement. A few moments passed and she sighed leaning her head onto his shoulder, “Thanks for all this, Harry. These have been the best holidays I can remember having.”
Quietly he merely whispered, “Me too.”
The song ended and a soft kiss was placed on his cheek as he was led off the dance floor back to their friends. Hopes of the New Year were discussed and Harry was even let in on some of the wedding plans for Alice and Frank. He was very happy for the couple, and grinned at the thought of their firstborn who would be joining them in this world in a few short years if all went well.
As midnight came around Harfang stood before the group giving a soaring speech about allies and future friends. Alice and Frank were even congratulated as the man raised a glass and displayed a countdown with magic in the air.
With a little less than a minute Charlus and Dorea had found their son and offered him and Elaina a flute of champagne as they all watched the clock tick. He felt a soft hand creep into his and he looked questioningly at Elaina who was watching the clock in anticipation. With ten seconds till the New Year Harry began to smile as he dreamed of burying what happened in his past behind him. Things were going to be different this time.
At one, the cheers began, and he heard the cries of Happy New Year, but the soft hand that was holding him had gone to his neck and he turned to Elaina who was standing on her toes moving closer to him. Without a second thought, he closed the distance between the girl and kissed her softly for a single moment. The kiss might’ve lasted a second moment, but before Harry could even begin to enjoy the kiss or feel the jubilation of sharing his second kiss with the girl that was worming her way further into his heart, it was broken by a scream.
The two jolted apart, and Harry protectively stepped in front of the girl with his wand drawn searching for a threat that was heightened by more screams. Guests were fleeing now, and a jet of green light filled the hallway making Harry’s heart race with adrenaline as he surged forward intending to find the threat.
Finding the source of the green light Harry saw an older man with his wand pointed at two bodies on the floor that he instantly recognized. Looking to stop the man from hurting anyone else he raised his wand, but before he could the man raised his wand to his own head and blasted himself with some type of piercing charm ending his own life in an instant.
Harry’s eyes widened as the blood began to pool on the floor and he surveyed the rest of the room for threats while the screams continued. Glancing over his shoulder he was grateful to know that Elaina was watching their backs with her wand drawn in case any dared to attack them. Charlus for his part however just slowly approached one of the fallen bodies and he wasn’t the only one.
Glancing towards Frank who had a look of shock on his face and other members of the Longbottom family matched the look. Screams of fear turned to wails of agony as a woman fell to her knees clutching the lifeless hand of Harfang Longbottom, undoubtedly a daughter of the family.
Others moved to comfort her as Frank and his relatives had their wands drawn searching for further threats, but none came. Harry locked his eyes on the still form of Charlus, and saw the silent tears of his mother that caused his heart to ache.
Fleamont who had seemingly come from nowhere appeared at the side of his younger brother placing a hand on his shoulder consolingly speaking quiet words to the man who did not even acknowledge his brother's words.
Glancing towards James he saw the young teen holding Lily close to him protectively while Remus and Sirius held their wands out shaking with adrenaline. He needed to get them all out of here. Before he could move to do anything a patronus charm in the form of a black cat came prancing into the room with a panicked female voice, “Charlus, help us! They are attacking Arcturus!”

Chapter 40
Harry and Elaina had said goodnight after their late-night kiss. The young man could hardly believe the girl had handled the bombshell as well as she had. It felt wrong saying that Charlus and Dorea weren’t his parents last night, but he tried to express how he felt about the two the best he could. They had been his rock in this world, and he cared for both of them immensely in the months they had come to know each other. They were the family he could’ve always had, and he was immensely grateful to have them in his life.
He stirred most of the night in his room pondering the impact of revealing his secrets to Elaina last night. He couldn’t quite justify his nerves over the matter. Charlus and Dorea obviously trusted her. It had been his mother who advised him to confide in her. The guilt or worry he was feeling now was the fact that James and Lily did not yet know who he was. A day would come however when the truth would come out. On that day he could only hope James would forgive him.
Harry was up at daybreak on Christmas despite a late restless evening. He was looking forward to exchanging gifts with his parents and breaking the ice with his cousin on the Quidditch pitch that evening. Spending time with his grandparents, along with Lord Black and his wife was just an icing on top of it all.
Sitting in the kitchen alone Harry sipped hot tea in the kitchen as he watched Mipsy swirl around the room in a whirlwind in an attempt to prepare breakfast. He smiled at the mutterings of the elf, “Everything must be perfect for the master's first Christmas with the family. So much to do, so much to do!”
Harry had offered the elf a little help when he first came into the kitchen and he nearly got smacked with a spatula as Mipsy begged him to sit down and let her service him.
An owl pecking at the kitchen window pulled his attention away from the loyal little house elf and with a wave of his hand, the window opened allowing the owl to enter. The owl was one Harry had seen at the Slytherin table often and he recognized it as Noctua, Andromeda’s owl.
The owl was carrying a small envelope that likely contained a letter from his friend, and he took the letter gently requesting for Mipsy to toss the bird a small treat for the delivery. Opening the letter he read it carefully,
Dear Elaina and Harry,
Happy Christmas to you both. I hope you have been enjoying each other's company over the break and judging by the lack of correspondence I have received from you two I am guessing that is the case. I am writing to you because I wanted you both to know that I will be accompanying my grandparents tonight to Potter Manor to spend Christmas Evening with the two of you. Looking forward to seeing you both tonight, and hope you have a fun gift for me!
With love,
Andromeda Black
Harry grinned at the letter knowing Elaina would be thrilled to know their friend would be joining them that evening to make the moment even more special. The thought of writing to their friends prompted the decision to write to Pandora and Xeno to wish them a happy holiday and try to schedule some time for them to all spend together before they returned to school. With Xeno having such a small family he was certain that the two were having a quiet season together, and Harry wished he had thought to invite them for boxing day or maybe even Christmas dinner had he thought of it sooner.
Resolving himself to write the letter later that afternoon Harry turned his head to the sound of footsteps coming down the hall and saw his mother looking bright-eyed and fully awake without her morning cup of coffee. Chuckling he said, “Good morning, mum. You look thrilled.”
“I came down early hoping you would tell me how your evening with our lovely guest went.” The woman said cheerily as she summoned the cup that Mipsy had ready for her mistress.
Sighing Harry slumped a bit, “We learned a lot about each other last night. She knows that there is a prophecy and that I grew up with my muggle relatives. I didn’t tell her about exactly everything, but she understands a lot more now.”
Dorea nodded in thought looking pleased by this as she took a seat across from him, “I am supposing she shared something new with you as well.”
“I learned the relationship with her dad is about as bad as I imagined.” Harry said with a frown, and Dorea merely hummed, “You knew?”
The question didn’t phase the woman as she sighed, “We attempted to contact the man. After Godric’s Hollow. A mistake we won’t make again. Charlus obliviated him of the memory when he became hostile. I hope you made it clear to her that she has a home here at Potter Manor for as long as she needs it.”
Harry nodded in confirmation and the woman sighed, “I feel your turmoil, Harry. What is it?”
“Did I do the right thing?” He asked quietly, “Telling Elaina before I told James or Lily?”
Dorea reached out and placed a comforting hand on his own, “I don’t know if this can be chalked up to something as simple as right or wrong. You are in what could be an unprecedented situation. Elaina has proven herself capable, and trustworthy through our time together. From what you told Charlus and I, James is showing glimpses of the man you knew him to be, but he isn’t ready for that big step yet. When that day comes, you will tell him the truth with confidence.”
Her advice eased his heart and he offered the woman a nod, “You're right. Thanks mum.”
She patted his hand gently and leaned back as they both sipped at their drinks. Dorea then posed the next question, “So is there anything else I should know about you and Elaina?”
He did his best not to sputter as he fought the rising heat to his cheeks, “Nothing.”
The tone of his voice betrayed him though and the woman merely smirked, “I am happy for you, Harry.”
“I’m happy for him too.” Another female voice said entering the room.
If Harry wasn’t red before he definitely was now as the smirking Elaina entered the room. The girl was in a similar outfit to what she liked to duel in and seemed prepared for morning training if they decided to have it.
Dorea chuckled heartily as the young woman wished them both a Happy Christmas as she took the seat next to Harry, “Where is Mr. Potter?”
Smirking, the woman said, “Oh he was checking on a guest we are expecting for our morning training.”
“So we are training today?” Elaina said with a gleam of excitement in her eyes.
Harry and his mother chuckled at her enthusiasm as Dorea said, “Quite the sadist isn’t she?”
“I would think she is tired of getting throttled by the three of us.” Harry said cheekily.
Offering the best glare she could manage at the two she just huffed, “You would think my appreciation for learning all I can with training with your family would be appreciated more. Besides, we almost beat Charlus in our two-on-ones.”
It was true Harry admitted to himself. The two of them had faced off against Charlus together, and had thrown up quite the fight. It was at that moment Harry realized his father was still holding back a little. The way he handled the two of them dueling him was inspiring. He turned their magic against them on more than one occasion and a part of him wondered when he was on his back looking up at the sky if Voldemort could truly defeat the man in single combat.
“You two are quite the team. I think Harry and I could do better together, but there is a part of me that fears hurting the man I love with my family magic.” Dorea said, pursing her lips together, “In a real field of battle I think my son and I would be quite the sight to behold.”
“Undoubtedly.” Elaina said cheerfully.
Dorea and Harry exchanged smiles and she clapped her hands, “Well I think you two are going to want to wait on breakfast. Trust me, what happens next may make you lose your appetite. Come along.”
Elaina and Harry exchanged nervous looks as they rose from the table and Dorea called out over her shoulder, “Keep the food warm for us Mipsy, I don’t think we will be too long.”
“Yes Mistress!” The house elf called back.
They were on the grounds in moments and Elaina whispered over to Harry, “Any idea what's going on?”
Before Harry could respond his mouth immediately dried at the sight of Charlus laughing with another older gentleman that the younger teen recognized in an instant. The dark hair and mustache were a dead giveaway as the group approached the man.
When they approached Harry greeted the man, “Godfather, Happy Christmas.”
The man smirked at Harry, “Happy Christmas to you, my boy. To you as well Ms. Essex, sister.”
Dorea came forward and embraced the man who returned the gesture with both arms, “It’s good to be in your company on Christmas Day once again.”
When the two separated Dorea offered her brother a large smile as the man then turned to face Elaina and Harry with a pointed stare, “Charlus tells me you almost unseated him in a two-on one-duel. That would have taken incredible teamwork, something I need to experience for myself. You should both know I will hold little back in what comes next, and I expect you both to do the same for me.”
Harry nodded grimly in understanding, while Elaina looked like she was being gifted something horrible yet great at the same time. The man vanished in a puff of black smoke that materialized from the ground below him darkening the grass where his feet stood. No sooner had he done that Charlus and Dorea both apparated away while Harry flicked his wand into his hand and stepped in front of Elaina deflecting a purple hex that came sailing towards her head from seemingly nowhere.
The girl yelped in surprise as she quickly summoned her wand searching for a target. Harry had witnessed much of the Black family magic, but it immediately became clear Arcturus was here to win. A barrage of spells came from behind him forcing Elaina to shield and roll out of the way of a curse that she didn’t recognize. Harry for his part did recognize the organ failure curse and swatted it right back at the man who stopped the spell instantly and hit it with another spell in mid-air causing it to explode sending the younger man sprawling backward. Harry had never seen that tactic displayed before, and before he could defend himself Elaina was in front of him shielding him while also conjuring three daggers and hurling them at the older man.
Arcturus for his part transfigured the weapons in mid-air to bats before sending them towards the duo. Before the bats could get to them however the creatures turned into a massive flaming creature with wings. The creature resembled something demonic, and Harry was back on his feet freezing the beast while Elaina blasted the frozen creatures into ice shards that the younger Potter directed towards the Black Lord.
Arcturus grunted as he turned the ice shards into sand and swirled it around his body before creating a solid clay wall to absorb the spells that Elaina and Harry had sent his way. By the time the clay wall exploded the man was gone.
Harry eyed the area around them when he felt the blast of power before he saw it. Linking his arm through Elaina’s he apparated the pair away, and was still forced to summon a head-to-toe shield to protect them from the impact of a tidal wave of power that was packed behind a blasting curse. There was little doubt that had they been in a room or possibly even a small house Arcturus would’ve just leveled it. Harry had always respected the man, but his power levels were something to behold.
Harry was forced to hold his shield as the spell seemed to continuously pin him down. Barking to Elaina he called out, “MOVE!”
The girl followed his orders in an instant and she cried out, “Reducto!”
The spells that were coming towards Harry suddenly stopped and he looked up to see Arcturus picking himself up off the ground. With speed, Harry attempted to pin the man down by transfiguring the trees behind him to life. The trees took the forms of warriors holding swords of bark and attempted to cleave the man in half as they closed the distance with no haste. Elaina had not been idle at that time as she attempted to pin the man down to prevent him from escaping. The man was clearly surprised by the series of events and barely escaped the guardians Harry brought to life.
Elaina and Harry were now decently separated as they scanned the field before a soft voice seemed to enter their minds, “That was a clean hit, and you almost had me, but we are only just getting started.”
A blast of purple shot across the sky like a lightning bolt and a dome seemed to materialize the length of a football field, and Harry looked around in horror not understanding the type of magic he was witnessing. When he attempted to apparate closer to Elaina he realized part of the magic was an anti-apparation ward, and he flinched when a purple bolt of lightning charred the middle of the field, and his ears rang with pain from the sound.
Trying to link up with Elaina he saw the girl battling Arcturus for her life as she attempted to find a way to fight back. Harry was about to attempt to crack the man in the side again, but a creature launched itself at him from the outskirts of the dome, and he was forced to cut it in half with a cutting curse. Black ooze came from the creature when it thumped onto the ground and Harry shook his head.
Taking aim at the Black Lord Harry prepared to take him out of the fight, when claws ripped into his back. He yelled out in pain, but before he knew it a red light struck him in the side, and the lights went out.
When he was revived he was on his back looking up at the sky. His ears still felt like they were ringing, but his back was no longer in pain. Sitting up he saw Dorea berating her brother, while Charlus was chuckling in amusement. Glancing to his left Elaina was sitting up with her knees pulled to her chest and her eyes wide. Harry shook his head as he made eye contact with his dad. The man quickly stepped over to him and helped his son to his feet, “That was some damn fine dueling and teamwork. Had Elaina used something a little more debilitating you both would’ve won. Hence why your mother is so angry.”
The amusement in the man’s voice couldn’t be missed, and Harry shook off the chill he felt as he stepped over to Elaina offering her a hand. When the two made eye contact she took the hand and said quietly, “I’ve never seen or felt magic like that before. That world he created was cold. It felt voidless there. What kind of magic was that?”
Arcturus who was stepping away from his sister's tirade said loudly, “Illusion magic. It was merely an anti-apparation ward combined with some of my family magic. Harry was caught by a transfiguration trap that I had set early on in the duel. He had no chance of blocking it while his focus was assisting you.”
“You are one terrifying wizard, Lord Black.” Elaina said with a bow of her head.
The man smirked, “You are inexperienced, but a damn talented witch indeed. Experience would have told you when fighting a wizard of my caliber you fight to kill, or in our case here for training purposes, incapacitate at minimum. You may be the most talented muggleborn I have met in my life, but the type of enemies you will be facing in the coming conflicts will hold nothing back and you should not either. Do you understand?”
“I do.” She nodded in confirmation.
Turning to face his godson Arcturus grinned, “You my boy, piss excellence. I quickly discovered your weakness in trying to protect your friend instead of trusting her to handle herself in the face of my magic. Separating the two of you and causing temporary panic is the only reason I beat you. Something experience will teach you both.”
Nodding in understanding Harry said, “It’s not that I didn’t trust Elaina to handle herself. I just knew in the face of the true magic of House Black she may panic or not understand what she is seeing. I have experienced enough of what you can do to not dilute myself into that line of thinking.”
Grunting the man retorted, “You two would’ve been damn fine additions to our team on the Western Front. Our day to battle together will come, and I can only imagine the fear we will strike into the enemy.”
The man looked gleeful at his words, while Dorea muttered, “You should be more worried about the fear I am going to strike into you if you curse my son like that again, Arcturus Black.”
Charlus chuckled at the woman’s mutterings while Arcturus just laughed, “I better get home and prepare for lunch with the rest of the clan. Potter’s, I will see you all at dinner tonight.”
With those words the man disappeared in a twist causing Harry to shake his head, “The man is a riptide.”
“You can imagine why the unit respected him so much, and why the enemy was so cautious to face him.” Charlus said with a fond smile on his face, “I would just blast a man to pieces, or destroy battlefields with my ability to conjure and transfigure. Arcturus would drive people insane on the battlefield, and walk past them as they clawed their own eyes out.”
“Sounds like a pleasant bloke.” Elaina said quietly.
“One of the best.” Charlus assured, “I would trust Arcturus with anything.”
Dorea scoffed, “Trust him to hurt our son. Come on children. It is Christmas, we should have been stuffing our faces not trying to kill each other.”
“If it’s all the same Mrs. Potter, that is an experience I may not care to have again, but it was awesome.” Elaina said with a look of awe in her tone, and a grin on her lips.
Dorea threw her hands into the air causing Charlus, Harry, and Elaina to laugh as they followed the woman back into the kitchen for lunch.
.o.
Outside of the horrifying experience of dueling with Arcturus Black, Harry had been having an extraordinary Christmas. He knew he didn’t have tons of good ones to compare it to, but nonetheless, it was everything he could’ve asked for. The family had exchanged gifts in the afternoon, and the most exciting aspect of it was a new broom from his parents. His first instinct beyond the excitement of it was to become frustrated with his cousin, but when his father had told him that Fleamont had noticed that Harry was on James’ old broom it had been decided that it would be an easy Christmas gift. It had been previously decided that the family was not going to make a big deal out of gifts this year, so Harry had given them both small trinkets with the Black and Potter crest on it, and they were thrilled with the thought behind it. For Elaina, Harry had gifted a book on wards written by a Potter as well as a nice dueling holster for her wand. His parents had even purchased her a very nice set of dueling robes, something that had nearly brought tears to the girl's eyes.
The girl had been embarrassed by her gift to the family in the face of hers, but they were all suitably blown away by the discovery that the girl was an artist. She had drawn a beautiful portrait of the family dueling on the grounds of Potter Manor. The details were immense, down to the intricacies of each of their wands. They all had smiles on their faces, and Harry along with his family were immensely grateful. She had also gifted each of them necklaces with the Potter coat of arms, something Harry had immediately asked her to put on him. The necklace was not the finest of jewelry, but the sentiment behind it to Harry was already priceless.
His parents had told her that they had one more gift for her, but it would have to wait till the end of the holidays. The pair were both curious as to the nature of the gift, but didn’t linger on it as they had been encouraged to go outside and enjoy a flight on Harry’s new Cleansweep.
When the two made it onto the grounds Elaina appeared nervous. She was wearing a jumper and long-fitting pants that appeared to keep her warm in the light snow that covered Potter Manor. Harry had offered the girl his previous broom that he had borrowed from James and the look on her face said it all, “Not a flier?”
“We just didn’t get enough time on them for me to be very comfortable on one.” She said, biting her lip as she summoned the older Cleansweep into her hand.
“If all you had to practice on were the ones in the cupboard at the school then I’d say you were at quite the disadvantage. Broom production has come a long way in recent years. These are a lot easier to control than what the school had on hand.” Harry said, trying to assure the girl.
His words weren’t a lie. Broom specs seemed to have become exponentially safer, faster, and easier to maneuver over the years. The broom Harry had flown in tryouts, vs the one James gifted him, to the one he received for Christmas, to the Nimbus he received in his first year was ridiculously different. He had confidence that if the girl didn’t try anything crazy she would be just fine.
Seeming to be nervous Harry offered, “Do you want me to ride with you for a few minutes? Give you a chance to get comfortable?”
The girls looked over at him and gave him an embarrassed look, “You don’t have to do that. I don’t need to babied.”
“I just want you to be comfortable.” Harry defended with his hands up, “We will have a lot more fun flying if you feel safe doing it.”
The girl was certainly turning red now, and Harry couldn’t help but feel slightly triumphant that he was pulling one over on the girl for once. With a sigh, she nodded and he placed his new broom safely on the ground as she walked over, “Okay you mount the broom, and I will ride in back. You guide us around, and I will offer you help if you need it. I am just a crutch if I am needed.”
Taking a deep breath the girl mounted the broom as he suggested and he carefully placed himself behind wrapping his arms around her midsection. From the back of her neck, he could feel the heat radiating off her now, and a smug sense of satisfaction overcame him when he said, “Whenever you’re ready.”
The girl nodded in a hurry and kicked them off the ground allowing them to levitate slightly. Without instruction she slowly began to lean forward, willing the broom to move. Gently he offered advice as he noticed her white knuckles, “Don’t grip the broom so hard, Elaina. Just relax. I won’t let anything happen to us in the air.”
Nodding she took another visible breath before lightening her grip. The two flew around for a few minutes, and Harry urged her to go faster, and take faster turns until he thought she was feeling pretty comfortable. When the two landed the girl was smiling a lot wider now, “I can see why you love to fly so much, you’re right, this broom is a lot better.”
“Well let’s get up there and enjoy it now.” He said cheekily as he summoned his broom to his hand as he dismounted hers.
When the rest of the family had arrived Harry and Elaina were still in the air flying around each other. The girl had become increasingly confident as time passed, while Charlus and Dorea had been watching the two from below. James and Sirius had joined the two in the sky as soon as they arrived and a casual passing of a quaffle broke out among the group. They were even joined by Andi when the Blacks had arrived and the adults decided to retire to the family dining room.
Andi had even been the first to crack a joke at the two, “So has Potter Manor become smaller as you’ve had to dodge your parents for your snogging sessions.”
Elaina had blushed at her friend's words while Harry just shrugged, “We find ways around it. Potter Maor is a big place after all.”
Sirius and James’ jaws both dropped while Andi blinked several times in surprise at his words and Elaina hid her laugh behind her hand as the quaffle hit Sirius in the chest while he was staring dumbly at Harry. This had started a rough game of the group trying to hit the other with the quaffle which led to Elaina drawing her wand and threatening to jinx Sirius for his tomfoolery. In other words, it was the best Christmas ever.
When the group was done flying the girls had claimed they were going to get cleaned up before dinner, but the look on Andi’s face told Harry she was looking for gossip. Chuckling Harry watched as James and Sirius both attempted to fix their respective hair and cast freshening charms on themselves as Harry made his way towards his room to change for dinner.
Arriving at his room he heard giggling that could’ve only belonged to Andi and he shook his head making entrance to the room. He set about to change clothes and when he decided he was ready for dinner he made to exit his room when he heard a firm knock on his door. Calling out for his surprise guest to enter the door opened to reveal Arcturus Black. The man entered and shut the door behind him, and Harry looked at the man warily, “Lord Black?”
“Just Arcturus, son.” The man said resolutely, “May I sit?”
The man gestured towards a chair that was connected to the desk in Harry’s room and Harry nodded as the man gruffed, “My body isn’t what it used to be. After dueling with you and the lass earlier I have been hobbling around all day.”
The man dropped into his seat and an awkward moment passed between the two before Arcturus cleared his throat, “Well I am sure you are wondering why I am here, so I won’t leave you in suspense. The Blacks failed you in your time, I failed you. It is something I have spent an enormous amount of time thinking about, and I don’t like it. My idiot Grandson made a lot of mistakes in your time, and while it's no excuse, he was young, and with me in his corner it never would have slid. You have my apologies for what happened to you.”
“There is nothing to forgive, Lord Black.”
The man shook his head, “I am your godfather in this world, Harry. Please, Arcturus, Uncle Arcturus, I am anything to you, except Lord Black. After learning your fate I hardly feel I deserve the title. Something I have a very hard time admitting, you may understand.”
With a man of Arcturus Black’s pride Harry could understand, so he nodded to indicate this making the man grunt with approval, “This is something I want to resolve. I will do this by giving you every means I possibly can to help you defeat this bastard.”
When he said this he reached into his coat pocket and placed a large black book on his desk and patted his hand on it, “You saw what my family's magic is capable of today. Learn it, wield it, master it, and conquer your enemies as generations of Black before you have done. Charlus and I were likely the first lords to ever share their family magic with each other, and perhaps we will be the last, but I would not sleep well at night if I did not know with certainty that I had given you every weapon I could. I told you the night we met that I would be happy to ride your curtails to victory, and I meant it. I intend to see the downfall of the man who divided my family to the point it crumbled in your time. I’ve seen what you are capable of, and I think you will do it. You will do it won’t you?”
The man raised a single eyebrow with the question and Harry didn’t even flinch, “Or die trying.”
Thudding his hand on the book again Arcturus muttered, “Good.”
Standing to his feet once again he put his hand towards the door, “You may not be Charlus’ and my sister's son, but you have their fire. I have seen it from the moment I laid eyes on you. Had they told me you were their son I’d have believed them. You’re going to win this war. I am as certain of that as I was certain of your father’s victory as I followed him across Europe.”
Feeling powerful at the man’s words Harry nodded firmly, “I will.”
Arcturus grinned as he held an arm out for him that he put around Harry’s shoulders when he approached, “That’s the spirit, now come on, let’s go see if we can’t give my sister a heart attack at dinner tonight.”
The two laughed as Harry followed the man towards the doors. The dinner that night with Harry’s family was something to behold as Mipsy had outdone herself. Tales of past Christmases from each side of the family were heard and the table was all smiles throughout the evening.
Harry looked over to his family and repeated the words of Arcturus Black in his head many times throughout the night. You’re going to win this war. The words meant more than Harry could have explained, but when he looked at each person around the table that night he knew he would do it for them.

Chapter 39
It had been a great holiday the days leading up to Christmas Eve. Harry had been mulling over the words his mother had spoken to him during their first duels upon returning to Potter Manor and they seemed to resonate with him more and more. Elaina had been great the last few days. She meshed well with his family and she had been working very hard in their training. Harry had little doubt the girl would be great on the dueling circuits. She was an incredibly hard worker and the two had been discussing magic with his family that had significantly expanded their repertoires.
Christmas Eve had arrived at Potter Manor and Harry was really feeling the holiday spirit for perhaps the first time in his life. The Potter’s plus Elaina were lounging in the sitting room decorating the tree with the nervous eyes of Mipsy on them. Charlus and Dorea had told Harry that they had not decorated the tree since Henry had passed, and he admitted in return that the only tree he had ever decorated was in his 5th year with Sirius. It was decided from there that the family would happily be decorating the tree together the night before Christmas.
The festivities had started that morning after training when Charlus and Harry were tasked with apparating to Ivy Cottage Tree Farm in western England to pick out a live tree that could be placed in the sitting room. That left Elaina and Dorea to go hunting through Potter Manor for old Christmas decorations that had not seen the light of day in years. Mipsy was even given the task of preparing dinner for the family, which she was invited to join them for, something that brought tears to the old house elves' eyes.
Dorea was in the highest spirits Harry could remember as the wireless played in the background and she lifted a beautiful star onto the top of the tree with the levitation charm. Celestina Warbeck was on in the background, and Harry briefly pondered just how long the Weasleys had been listening to the woman’s music for. Regardless Harry recognized a few tunes and reached out to grab his mother’s hand to dance around the room to a more upbeat tune. The woman had laughed joyously as Harry spun her around off-beat.
Charlus and Elaina both clapped for the two and the dark-haired girl even whistled while laughing at Harry’s ridiculous dance moves. When the song ended the pair went back to decorating the tree and Charlus had ended up having a camera forced into his hands by his wife so he could take pictures of the woman and her son decorating. This led to a series of photos taken with Harry and each parent, a photo of Charlus and Dorea together, and then a picture of Harry and Elaina.
Elaina approached him with a shy smile as he put his arm around her, a smile unable to fall off of his face. Dorea had taken the picture and then demanded they wait for a moment as she passed the camera to Mipsy who took a photo of all of them.
Harry stood with his arm around Dorea and Elaina while he felt a hand from Charlus reach over his wife to his son’s shoulder. It was a moment Harry would remember forever and when the picture was taken a new song came on the wireless. A fast-paced song followed the end of their picture taking and Charlus was spinning Dorea around the room before the teens could move away.
Offering Elaina a grin Harry offered her his hand and she looked at him with red cheeks saying, “I don’t know how to dance, Harry.”
Laughing, he took the girl's hand, “You saw mum and I earlier, do you really think I know how?”
With that, he spun the girl around and took both her hands stepping back and forth with hardly a rhyme or reason much less a rhythm. The two were laughing as Harry spun the girl into his arms, and spun her around like a ballerina right out of it. He looked over to see his mum and dad smiling largely at the pair as they swayed around the room a little slower as the song changed.
The next song was a smooth soft tone, and Harry slowed the two down swaying together softly. Elaina sighed in contentment in his arms and whispered, “Thank you for this, Harry.”
He said nothing in return but offered her a nod. This was a far cry from his last Christmas. A dark thought reminded him that Hermione was leading him through the cemetery at Godric’s Hollow last time, and then they were nearly killed by Nagini. It was the night he had broken his wand, and the night he felt the most lost in what to do next. It was a horrible time in his life, and he could only be thankful he had someone to stand beside him at that moment.
Not a day passed since he didn’t miss Hermione and Ron. Not a day passed that he didn’t think about what he lost. Standing there in Potter Manor though holding the beautiful muggle-born girl in his arms, with the eyes of people called family on him, he knew he had been blessed to be in this moment. He also knew that he couldn’t keep living the lie. Not with the people that mattered most. Elaina seemed to know something wasn’t quite right today. She seemed to realize there were no traditions for the family. She had said nothing, but a few times the girl had been wearing her thoughts on her sleeve, and Harry knew it was unfair.
When the song stopped he felt a soft pair of lips on his cheek and he smiled at his muggle-born friend who was dangerously close to him. He didn’t step away, instead, he was frozen by the blue and green eye that had him locked in place. Instead of doing anything, Charlus cleared his voice making the two snap their heads toward him. The man was looking at him with a grin, “Don’t mind us. The tree is done though, and we are going to head to bed. Tomorrow is a big day.”
Dorea was smiling ear to ear and approached the two throwing her arms around them both. Kissing Harry on the cheek Elaina had missed squeezing them both tight, “Happy Christmas you two. We will see you both in the morning. Do not stay up too late.”
Elaina and Harry both embraced the small woman redder than either would like to admit. Charlus just offered them both knowing smiles as he followed his wife out of the room. The two were still close and Harry turned slightly, offering his arm, “Let’s go for a walk on the grounds.”
In acceptance, the girl silently placed her hand through his arm and followed his lead towards the nearest door that would take them outside.
Snow covered the grounds of Potter Manor, and when they stepped outside there was a very cold chill in the air. With grace Harry pulled his wand out and cast two small blue flames that provided minimal light, but enough warmth to keep the discomfort of the cold away. Warming charms were slowly weaved through both of them as well as Harry walked Elaina towards a frozen pond that sat a little way from the house.
The skies were clear making it a beautiful Christmas Eve, and the moon along with the stars were brighter than ever. Taking a deep breath Harry thought about what should come next. What secrets should he start with? What could he tell her to make her understand him the most?
“This has been the best Christmas I’ve ever had.” Elaina said quietly, beating him to the start of a conversation.
“You and your dad didn’t celebrate?” Harry asked, assuming out of things she had implied in the past.
Shaking her head she bit her lip, “He was usually passed out on the floor drunk on Christmas. Bemoaning the fact that my mother had left him. Any number of horrible things could have happened to her, but all he cared about was that she was no longer there with him. I understand in some ways, but in others it made me angry.”
A drunk that despised magic. The horrible thoughts that Harry had about her father seemed all but confirmed at that moment. He wouldn’t pry to understand, in fact just in the way she spoke he seemed to comprehend more than she wanted him to.
“It’s not like I wasn’t used to seeing him drunk anyways. He never wanted to talk to me even when I was younger. He knew I had these abilities and truthfully I think it terrified him. I think he drank to forget that he had a freak of a daughter” Elaina said with a clenched fist.
At the word freak Harry felt a surge of anger course through him and he said, “You’re not a freak, Elaina.”
The girl seemed surprised by his outburst, and he continued, “Your father couldn’t understand how special you were. He may have been jealous of what your potential was. A potential he never could have imagined. Your mum obviously loved you, and she may have left because of his drinking, but I am sure if she was able to, she would’ve come back for you.”
A long silence fell between the two, and then, Elaina said, “I wouldn’t have blamed my mom if that was the reason she left. I just wish if that was the case she would’ve taken me with her.”
This last part was said so quietly Harry barely heard her. His heart hurt for his friend, but mostly because he understood her. He knew the feeling of being unloved by your family. The only ones you have left.
“You want to know the real reason I didn’t run away, Harry?” Elaina asked softly. Her voice sounded weak as if she was about to admit something out loud that she had never admitted to even herself, “I just always hoped she would come back. If I left then she would never have been able to find me again. I just wanted a chance to be loved by my mom again.”
Harry didn’t even think as he pulled the girl into his arms and she choked out a sob. Rubbing circles into the girl’s back Harry whispered, “We are going to find out what happened to your mum, Elaina. That’s a promise.”
The girl needed her closure and she shook her head pushing him away gently, “I don’t know how I would face her. I don’t know how I would admit to what I have done.”
“What do you mean?” Harry asked warily. Was this going to be her confession into digging into dark magic? Would this be the moment he discovered how she became so powerful?
Elaina swallowed hard before saying, “My dad was really horrible to me my first two summers when I came back from Hogwarts. It started as just words. Cruel things said in the heat of an alcohol-induced stupor. I dismissed most of them and just carried on with my life trying to ignore him. In my third year, I became a little more defensive of my abilities and… he tried to hit me, and I cursed him.”
Harry’s eyes widened, but he immediately shook his head, “The Ministry didn’t come after you, because it was self-defense?”
Shaking her head she bit her lip before saying, “They didn’t know…”
At first, Harry was confused but then she continued, “I always thought it was an inevitable outcome that my father would result to violence with me. I also knew that if I cursed him then there was a chance the Ministry would come for me self-defense or not. So I went to Diagon Alley after returning home from my 2nd year, and I stole a wand from a man in Knockturn Alley. I had worried about my dad losing his cool for years, and…I needed a way to protect myself.”
“You did what you had to.” Harry consoled in understanding. He remembered when he had pulled his wand on Vernon after he blew up Marge. There had been a fierce intensity in his eyes that night, and Harry had no doubt that had he not put his wand on the man’s face he would’ve seriously hurt him.
Wiping at her eyes and getting the tears out she said, “It was just a knockback jinx, but I was so scared it came out a lot stronger than it should have. He hit the wall hard, and was unconscious. I knew when he woke up he would be out to get me, so I…started using the Confundus charm on him. Everyday. For weeks at a time. I had to keep him under the spell or I knew he would hurt me. You see now why the situation became better over time, but far from perfect.”
Realizing he now had a chance to ask her a question that had been on his mind since he first felt her power he felt a sense of dream creep into his chest as he asked, “Elaina…I know you were scared of living at home, and I understand why. You were scared of what the other Slytherins would do to you if you weren’t strong enough, which is why you pushed yourself so hard in your studies, I understand that too. What I have to know now is did you take any measures to make sure you were strong enough to stand against your father and the others?”
Confusion flickered across her features as she shook her head, “I just trained and studied hard, Harry. What do you mean?”
“There are certain rituals, things that could be viewed as dark by the ministry, but aren’t necessarily so. Have you ever tried one?” Harry asked carefully, trying not to sound accusing.
Immediately she answered, “I came across things over the years, but I was always afraid I would mess it up. I never dabbled in ritualistic magic.”
Harry released a breath he wasn’t sure how long he had been holding. A small weight lifted off his shoulders as he often pondered whether his friends' abilities stemmed from ancient or dark magic. Knowing now that she was okay he spoke confidently.
“You’re never going back there.” Harry said, taking both her hands in his, “When we graduate we will go find out what happened to your mum. If she really did leave because of your dad’s drinking problem, then she will understand. Was there no other family you could go to?”
Elaina shrugged as she turned to face the water, the moonlight making her eyes burn brighter than usual, “I don’t know. My dad didn’t speak of his family, and mum told me that her mother died giving birth. Her father was never in the picture. No siblings that I knew of. There was nowhere to go.”
Swallowing hard, Harry knew he truly did understand better than anyone, and he had to show her just how much, “Come with me.”
Grabbing her by the hand he led her back to the house in silence. With each step flashes of horrible memories went through his mind about his childhood with the Dursleys. He didn’t know where to start. He didn’t know what memory would show her the truth in a way she could see that he was just like her.
Entering Potter Manor Harry gently dragged her to the library and pushed open the double doors gently. Tall bookshelves lined the walls of the room, but the stone basin in the middle that had a circular device resting on it was what Harry was looking for. Taking a deep breath Harry spoke softly, trying not to remember the fear he felt during the days of the memory he planned to show her, “Remember I told you that my family viewed your memory of being attacked in the Pensieve, this is it. I am going to show you something that is going to be difficult to understand, but somehow I am going to explain it to you. I just need you to trust me, okay?”
“I do trust you, Harry.” Elaina said with a tone of confusion in her voice.
Sighing Harry just held his eyes on the basin pulling his wand to his head and dropping a memory in the small pool of mist, “We just have to put our faces in the basin, and we will enter my memory.”
Elaina nodded but looked at the bowl in trepidation. Deciding to go first Harry placed his face in it, and felt himself get dragged into the memory.
The memory started at the zoo in the reptile exhibit area. Harry stood by himself for only a moment until Elaina joined him. Quickly she looked around in surprise asking, “Are we at the London Zoo?”
Harry just nodded his head and pointed his head towards the exhibit of a Boa Constrictor that ten-year-old Harry was examining with interest. Stepping to be closer to his younger self he said, “This was the day I discovered I was a parselmouth, but I had no idea what it meant at the time.”
“Wow Harry, you were tiny. Those glasses are awful.” Elaina teased.
The teasing tone died when Dudley charged up and knocked Harry to the ground leaning up against the glass in excitement now that the Boa was reared up talking to Harry. Elaina said nothing, but watched as the glass disappeared and his cousin toppled into the exhibit. The dark-haired girl's jaw dropped as the snake escaped its exhibit, and she asked, “What did he say to you?”
“Thanks.” Harry answered simply.
They watched with mild humor as the glass reappeared and the parents of the child panicked about not being able to help the large boy escape. All humor was gone however when the large man turned his narrowed eyes to the young Harry with malevolence in his eyes.
The scene shifted to the arrival of the family at Privet Drive #4, and the woman had a towel and blanket wrapped around her son, while Harry removed himself from the car with trepidation. The cookie-cutter houses on Privet Drive were enough to turn Harry’s stomach as he realized his grateful attitude to never having to return to his own personal hell. Elaina voiced the question as they followed young Harry to the house, “Who are these people, Harry?”
“My aunt Petunia, uncle Vernon, and my cousin Dudley.” Harry answered quietly as they entered the house.
Elaina shook her head, “Harry, I don’t under-”
Before she could finish her question young Harry was thrown against the wall and grabbed by the hair before he could fall as Vernon was in his face shouting, “What happened?”
“I don’t know!” Younger Harry cried out in pain, “One second the glass was there, then it was gone, it was like magic!”
The hand that swiped young Harry across the face came so fast that Elaina didn’t have time to attempt to intervene. Instead, she looked at the down boy who was grabbed by the back of his shirt in horror, her hand shooting to his wrist. The younger version of himself had a red handprint on his face as Vernon gathered him up and tossed him into a cupboard underneath the stare roaring out, “There is no such thing as magic!”
Vernon stormed off and Harry shook his head, “Come on, let’s go. There is nothing else to see here.”
Elaina said nothing as she exited the pensieve first followed immediately by Harry. When they arrived back in the library the girl's hand clenched in a fist, “Your uncle? He is dead I presume? Your mother or father killed him?”
Shaking his head Harry offered a forced smile, “Not exactly.”
Shaking her head she sat down on a couch nearby and put her face in her hands. Harry for his part merely watched as she came to terms with the memory she just watched, “Harry, I don’t understand.”
“I grew up with muggle relatives.” Harry said softly.
Elaina’s head whipped towards him, “What?”
“It’s hard to explain, but I grew up with my aunt and uncle. Muggles.” Harry stated.
“Hard to explain? Harry, that doesn’t make sense at all.” Elaina said with what sounded like irritation in her voice.
“I can’t tell you everything, not yet, but this is what I can tell you.” Taking a moment to compose himself Harry sat down across from her, “Charlus and Dorea are not my birth parents. They are my parents now in every way that counts, but they did not bring me into this world. I am Potter, and I am not a bastard, but my circumstance of birth is a very closely guarded secret in my family. Even James does not know yet. I met Charlus and Dorea over the Summer and they took me in, while also creating the lie the world is being told now.”
Elaina’s mouth was practically on the floor, and long moments passed before she said, “I have so many questions.”
“Before you ask them, let me explain a little more.” Harry offered, “My parents were killed by Purebloods, followers of the man we met in Godric’s Hollow.”
“Voldemort.” Elaina said with a frown on her face.
Nodding Harry continued, “Yes. There was a prophecy made when I was born. A prophecy that said I would have the power to vanquish a dark lord. Born to those who had thrice defied him. My parents defied this man three times before he killed them. My father was a powerful Pureblood that Voldemort wanted to recruit. My father however knew what they would do to my mum, and he wasn’t a bigot so he stood against him.”
“You're a half-blood.” Elaina said as if it were the only earth-shattering thing that mattered in that moment.
“I hope me being a Pureblood wasn’t the only reason you spent time with me.” Harry said jokingly.
Immediately she shot him a dirty look and stood to her feet pacing around the room. Her mind was clearly spinning in anticipation of what her next question should be. Her eyes were now darker than he had ever seen them, and he knew she was trying to piece together missing pieces of the puzzle that she didn’t have.
“So you were in hiding for all these years? With your muggle relatives? And none of those other Potters knew you existed?” She questioned harshly.
In confirmation, Harry just grunted, “I was attending a magical school from the time I turned eleven. For now, I can’t tell you where. What I can tell you is that I met followers of Voldemort along the way. Some of them discovered who I was, and I fought some of them. My friends and I. We fought them.”
“Did they know who you were?” Elaina asked quietly.
“Yes.” Harry admitted, “Hermione, my best friend stood beside me through it all. We had another friend named Ron who was beside me through it all.”
“Did they know how horrible your muggle relatives were?” She asked with a tint of anger in her voice.
“I think they both suspected, but never confronted me about it. My friend Ron’s family took me in for large parts of my Summer while we weren’t at school. Those were the only highlights of my Summers.” Harry confirmed.
“And the memory you showed me where your uncle hit you? Is that-”
“Only one of dozens.” Harry interrupted, “They shaped me into who I am. I hated them for what they did to me at times, but in the end, I helped them flee before I came to the Potters and returned to our community of Wizarding Britain.”
“Why did you return?” She asked, looking him in the eyes.
“To protect my family.” Harry said as he clenched his fist, “To put an end to this bastard before he hurts anyone else I care about. If the prophecy says I will have the power to defeat him then I will do everything I can to live up to that. My parents sacrificed themselves all those years ago to give me a chance at life. As you can see I have not wasted that. Someday soon the other Potters, and I will wage war against this man. We are going to make him regret what he did to my parents, and we are going to fight him for all the people who aren’t strong enough to stand up for themselves.”
Elaina looked at him with an even expression for a long moment, before her eyes softened, “I don’t completely understand. How are you sure this prophecy spoke of you?”
“He doesn’t know its entire contents. Only a few people in the world do, but one part of it is very important that makes us believe I am the one.” Harry said softly as he pushed aside the hair that covered his lightning bolt scar that anyone from his previous world would’ve recognized in an instant, “I survived a very dark curse that left me with this mark. When he cast the spell on me it rebounded due to my mother’s sacrifice and protection. In a way it was a moment that marked me as his equal.”
Elaina shook her head grasping for understanding desperately, “There’s more to it?”
“There is.” Harry confirmed, “But for now just know you are more informed than anyone outside of my family. I trust you, Elaina. I also needed you to understand me. I wanted you to know that I can also understand you. That I wasn’t some spoiled rich kid that was handed everything, because I can see how it may look that way. I love Charlus and Dorea, and I will call them mum and dad forever, but it wasn’t always that way. We came together like three kindred souls, and hearing your story I see how you have to get along with us so easily.”
“Why did it matter to you so much? Why did it matter if I understood or not?” Elaina asked as she stepped closer to him, “I’m nothing.”
“Not to me you're not.” Harry said softly, “You remind me so much of myself. Your drive is what brought us together. You protected me, you fought for my family, and I have paid back that to you in blood.”
“You have.” She answered quietly.
A long silence filled the room as they both contemplated what they learned tonight. Harry broke the silence, “Elaina, being close to me, it’s going to get dangerous. You know what Voldemort has taken from me. I will stop at nothing to beat him. My family and I will put an end to him and his followers, but this is war, and there could be a price to pay.”
“His followers have already tried to kill me, Harry.” Elaina said tenderly, “I have embarrassed several of them as well. They are going to come for me one way or another. The way I see it, the closer I am to you, and your family, the safer I will be. If Voldemort and his followers want to kill you, they are going to have to kill me too.”
Harry’s heart began to thump in his chest as he swallowed hard. Hermione had said something very similar to Sirius in his time when they thought he was a Death Eater. The similarities between the two were immense, but in the end, it was their differences that drew him closer to Elaina. She didn’t nag at him, she never pushed him for information, even now when she had to have 100s of questions for him. She merely allowed it to come in its own time, and for that reason, he felt Dorea was right that the time to confide in her was now. He wondered how much his parents knew of the girl that was standing a mere less than a meter away from him.
Those thoughts washed away though as her eyes shifted above them where mistletoe was hanging above them. He didn’t realize when they had stepped under it, and he partially pondered whether Mipsy or his parents had planned the moment, but it didn’t matter. Her eyes glanced down to his lips, and somehow that seemed like enough of an invitation for him to reach a hand out to her hip and bring her in gently for a soft kiss.
It was perhaps the most tender kiss he had ever shared with a girl. Their lips met and slowly moved together in brief harmony. The clock chimed in the back of the room and the two slowly slid apart looking towards the clock that now read midnight. Glancing back at her, Harry offered her quiet words, “Happy Christmas, Elaina.”
“Happy Christmas, Harry.”
Without prompting she leaned her head into his shoulder and whispered, “Promise me one day there will be no secrets.”
It was hard to contain the feeling of butterflies in his stomach. The slight surge of euphoria he felt from the kiss they had just shared, and he calmly said back, “One day there will be no secrets.

Chapter 38
The confusion Lily had on the quiet ride home to Cokeworth was palpable. She had attempted to question her mother about the odd encounter with Harry, but the woman was giving both her daughter and husband the cold shoulder. With her mother being oddly silent on the car ride home this left time for her Dad to catch up on what was going on in the Wizarding World.
Her father had questioned her often about the ins and outs of the Wizengamot and current events in the magical world. The man was fascinated by what was out there lurking in the shadows, but ever since the first unexplainable carnage in Sussex the man had been writing her letters expressing his concern.
Jonathan Evans was no idiot. He had spent most of his career in the Royal Navy, and studied the concepts of war and battle for his whole adult life. He had even participated briefly in special operations in Oman when Lily was just a small child. This means he recognized revolution when he saw one, or worse yet, a civil war.
“Would it be safer for you to not go back? Perhaps it would be best to leave the country for a while and to let things die down. You could attend University, and self-study for your final exams for the magical world. I read in that book you sent me that you could take your NEWT’s in other countries if you desired. The curriculum would be different, but I am certain you could be successful if you put your mind to it.” Jonathan stated carefully.
Lily sighed as they pulled into her neighborhood. It was true that the attacks on the Muggle world had frightened her. Not for her safety though, she could defend herself, but for her parents' safety was a different story. Despite her father being quite capable of defending himself she knew he was no match for what magic could do. If Cokeworth was attacked by the men in masks there was little that could be done to stop them. In fact her father would likely be killed in the attempt to stop them. She could only imagine how many men had been caught in the crossfire of these attacks trying to defend their homes.
“It would be.” Lily confirmed, “You didn’t raise a coward though.”
The last part was said quietly, and instead of getting mad, Jonathon just nodded firmly in understanding, waiting for his daughter to add more. Lily didn’t disappoint, “There is only half a term left at Hogwarts. I am looked to as a leader being Head Girl. I wouldn’t be a very good one if I left. My friends may need me.”
“Like that Harry Potter boy?” The man asked with suspicion in his voice.
Shaking her head, “Harry doesn’t need help. He is very powerful, and has already involved himself in the conflict with the men in masks.”
Her mother was paying attention now and broke her long silence, “He has? The boy can’t be much older than you.”
“He is younger than me I believe. I am older than James, and James says that he is older than Harry.” Lily explained.
“What has he done?” Her father asked curiously.
“They attacked his family's ancestral home.” She said quietly, “His parents called for his help one night while we were all in the village of Hogsmeade together. I saw the messenger charm myself. He killed some of the attackers.”
Both her parents' eyes widened in surprise. She could see from the backseat that they were clearly shocked to learn that the polite boy they had just met was capable of such things. She was quick to defend them, “Those monsters have killed hundreds, and there is no telling the damage they could’ve done or how many lives could have been lost in Godric’s Hollow had Harry and his family not stopped them.”
Pulling into the driveway the family was silent for a long moment as the car was put in park. Lily was the first to get out of the car feeling heated over having to defend her friend. As she moved towards the door though she realized neither of her parents had said a word against Harry, they were just surprised.
Taking a deep breath she entered her childhood home and took in the house that had given her so many fond memories. The house had been different since Petunia had left home to enter the work world. Her parents had mentioned to her in a letter that she was seeing someone currently and she wished her sister all the happiness in the world even if she didn’t return her letters.
A hand was placed on her shoulder gently and she turned to see her father looking at her with some degree of concern, “I think we should continue the conversation we were having in the car. There is more I would like to know if you are up for it?”
Her father wouldn’t push. He knew her will was as strong as his own, and if she didn’t want to share she wouldn’t. Lily however sighed nodding her head before moving towards the sitting room where she pulled out a chair from the breakfast table taking a seat.
Both her parents sat across from her and her father said, “It sounds like you quite admire this Harry Potter. Quite the contrast to what we have heard you say about his cousin. I don’t remember you ever mentioning the boy though.”
The question was there even without it being asked, “Harry was in hiding for most of his life. Protected by his parents after his older brother died of a magical disease. The world didn’t know he existed until he appeared over the Summer. Even James supposedly didn't know about him.”
“You had mentioned James wasn’t bothering you as much?” Her mother asked softly.
“He hasn’t.” Lily confirmed, “With him being Head Boy he has really done his part to be a good leader to the other students and Prefects. The Marauders are still up to their old tricks, but nothing cruel like I had seen in the past. They all seem to be growing up. I can say Harry probably had a hand in that.”
“There’s that admiration again. Is there something between you two?” Her father asked directly this time.
“No, it’s not like that.” Lily said immediately, “Besides I think there is something between Harry and Elaina. She is spending the holidays with his family, and she followed him that night into Godric’s Hollow. Harry has been training her personally and the two of them are undoubtedly the most powerful students at Hogwarts.”
“Does that disappoint you?” Her mother asked.
Thinking for a moment she shook her head, “No, like I said, it’s not like that. Both of them have been good friends to me. I hope they do end up together, but they are both so secretive I can see that being an obstacle. At the end of it all, Harry has just been more like a mentor to me, despite me being older. His knowledge of magic is incredible. He just has this look sometimes that makes me think he has seen terrible things.”
“It is not an easy thing taking a life at that age, Lily.” Her father explained, “No matter what righteous justification he had, the boy took up arms against an enemy that would have killed him if they were able to. That changes men much older and wiser than him.”
Shaking her head, “I could see the look even before that night in Godric’s Hollow. He looks like someone who is carrying the weight of the world. He even has a haunted look in his eyes. Wherever he was before Hogwarts I don’t think it was very kind to him. It seems impossible though, I have met his parents, and they both seem so caring and loving of him. From what little I saw I can’t imagine a scenario where bad things could’ve happened to him.”
“Be careful making assumptions.” Her father cautioned, “The fact that his family called for him that night speaks volumes of what they think of his capability. I can not ever imagine calling you for help if we were under attack despite knowing what you and your magic are capable of. For a parent to do that they must have unwavering faith in his abilities and most importantly his experience.”
Lily pondered the words for a long moment. If anyone would have valuable insight on what was happening in her world it would be her father. She had never considered what kind of faith the Potters must have had in their son to pull him into such a dangerous situation. The experienced soldier was right though, it must have been the unwavering trust the Potters had in her friend that convinced them to call for him, “That’s a good perspective, Dad.”
The man nodded slightly and her mother stood from the table walking out of the sitting room for a moment as the two remained quiet and contemplative. Her father asked next, “Do you think your school is safe?”
Without hesitation Lily nodded, “Professor Dumbledore is considered the most powerful wizard in Britain, possibly even the world. The other professors are also some of the most gifted witches and wizards around. Add in Harry to the mix and the Hogwarts ancient defenses I think there is probably nowhere safer in the world.”
In satisfaction, the man grunted his approval before sighing, “It scares me to send you into a world I still know so little about. Knowing now that the equivalent to armed conflict is happening across our country and my daughter could be caught in the crossfires-”
“I know it's scary. For you and me.” Lily admitted, “But something tells me this is bigger than it seems. Something tells me we won’t be able to run from this. Even if we tried.”
Jonathan Evans looked grave at her words, but before he could add anything further her mother returned with a small white box. When she sat it on the table she removed the lid and put several photos on the table. Lily and Jonathon both looked at the woman oddly before grabbing the photos on the table. Lily blinked several times as her mind registered the photo.
“He was killed in World War II. He left my mother a widow when I was a little girl. She often told me I would have had many siblings had he lived through the war.” Iris explained, “Now I am sure you can imagine my surprise. I don’t remember my father’s face very well, but I looked at these photos enough times in my life to have it memorized.”
Lily understood her mother’s surprise from before now. If Lily didn’t know any better she would say that Harry was the son of the man in the photo. The same green eyes, a very similar build, and the dark, mid-length black hair gave all the impressions that the two could be related. Unsure what to say Lily just stared at the photo for a long moment pondering the coincidence, and not for the first time wondering just who Harry Potter was.
.o.
Arriving at Potter Manor Harry took a deep breath of fresh air. It was good to be back at home. Away from the eyes of Hogwarts, the headmaster, and the curious professors. Here he was free to be who he was, well, almost. Glancing at the girl beside him her eyes were wide as she took in the property around her. Her eyes drifted to the flower gardens that Mipsy took immense care of before swooping her eyes across the white marble house.
“I can’t believe you grew up here. This place is amazing.” Elaina said in quiet awe.
“I only visited her for the first time over the Summer myself. A long story I hope to give you some insight into over the weekend.” Harry said with a slight smile.
Before she could question however he put a hand on the small of her back and pushed her forward slightly before putting his hands back behind him, “The best parts of Potter Manor to me are on the outside. Thestral roam the grounds all year around though they don’t often approach the house itself. Our family also has a griffin that occasionally appears. His name is Halo, and he has been protecting the grounds of Potter Manor for generations. Maybe we will see him sometime while you are here.”
“That sounds great. I haven’t encountered many magical beasts outside of the classroom. No thanks to Professor Kettleburn but he has too much preference with Nifflers. I would’ve liked to see something a bit more exciting.” Elaina confessed.
“I know we have been dodging the Acromantula nest in the forbidden forest, but if you have such a desire to meet a magical beast I hear there is a spider in there about eight meters tall.” Harry said with a grin.
“Pass.” She answered immediately, making the boy chuckle.
Arriving at the front door Harry pushed his way in to be greeted by his Mum, Dad, and Mipsy. Mipsy was the first to greet them, “Welcome home Master Harry, and welcome Missy Elany, to Potter Manor! Mipsy will be helping you with anything you be needing.”
“Thanks, Mipsy.” Harry and Elaina both said, making the elf smile and disappear with a snap.
Elaina’s eyes were surveying the halls of Potter Manor with a look of wonder causing the Potters to all smile at her patiently waiting for her to come to grips with her surroundings. Charlus broke the momentary silence with, “Not much on the agenda today except maybe a little evening training if you two are up for it. Until then, Harry, you can show Elaina around and get settled. At dinner tonight we can go over some plans for the holidays. Elaina, our home is your home, so please if you need anything just call for Mipsy or ask one of us. You are a welcome guest in our ancestral home.”
With a slight bow of his head, Charlus grinned at her before winking at the pair and strolling off towards the sitting room that had the wireless in it. Dorea grinned at the two following her husband, “Keep the doors open you two!”
Shaking his head and watching Elaina laugh Harry gestured with his head to follow him as he guided her around the old manor home. The tour was all the highlights, and when they arrived in the hall of portraits outside their rooms she studied the faces of his ancestors, “It’s so cool how wizarding families keep such accurate portraits of their family.”
As she moved up and down the hallway Harry followed her eyes to even more recent wizarding photos that were up on the wall. Among them was the photo that Harry had kept on his nightstand at Hogwarts as well as a photo of Charlus, Fleamont, and their father, William, who had died at the start of the Great War.
Elaina's eyes seemed to freeze on one photo and Harry’s heart clenched at the familiarity that passed through his mind. The photo of Henry holding James as a baby. Not wanting to address that particular demon just yet Harry called out, “Why don’t you go put your stuff down in that room over there. It’s right across from mine. After that, we can go take a look on the grounds and I can show you where we will be training tonight. If you are up for it?”
“Are you kidding?” She asked, “That's all I have been thinking about since I was invited.”
The grin on her face made him smile in return as her eyes seemed to glow in anticipation. Gone was the usually dreary girl that sat with him at the Slytherin table for their meals. In her place was someone who seemed in awe of magic and the world around them. The look she gave him made a pleasant feeling appear in his chest as he watched her all but run to her room to put her stuff away. Deciding to change clothes and put his stuff away he moved to his room to get settled before quickly returning to the hallway with his thoughts on the guest in Potter Manor.
They really weren’t so different. Their love for magic was equally intense. Something he had come to realize over the last few months. They shared a lot of common interests and skills, something they had taken advantage of in their time together. He was curious to see how she interacted with his family over the break, and hoped they all enjoyed their time together.
Elaina was back in the hallway with her dark hair tied back in a ponytail with shorts and a v-neck t-shirt. The outfit made Harry’s mouth dry out a bit. He had rarely seen the girl in anything outside of robes. This would be the first time he had seen her in real muggle attire, and he had to remind himself that his friend was a beautiful girl.
Her eyes seemed to dance with amusement as she said, “Done staring, Harry? I thought you were going to show me around.”
The teasing in her tone nearly caught him flat-footed before he shook his head, “If you don’t slap me, maybe I won’t be done staring.”
“Don’t tempt me.” she warned casually brandishing her wand with a smile still on her face.
Chuckling Harry led the girl back to the grounds of the manor and began showing her around the property. A few hours passed as they crossed the separate areas covering as much of the property as they could before the sun could set. Before they could go to the training area however they found themselves under the orchard standing humbly before a small tombstone.
Harry stared at the familiar words as Elaina seemed to take in his solemn silence as they stood over the boy that would’ve been his brother in this world. Harry had tried to direct her away from this area, but she had been drawn to it. She had been so immersed in the magical areas of the grounds that Harry did not wish to bring the girl down, but her soft quiet voice told him that she was feeling the gravity of what lay before her, “Losing him changed everything for your family, huh? Do you ever wonder what he would have been like?”
“All the time.” Harry answered honestly. It was a wonder what Harry’s life could’ve been like if he had magical relatives in his time. Had Henry lived and been raised by Charlus and Dorea he couldn’t imagine any scenario where he would not have been welcomed with open arms by his cousin.
A soft hand slipped into his as he continued to stare at the tombstone, his mind lost in the possibilities of how things should have been. The comfort he felt from the soft squeeze lifted his spirit enough to turn to face her with the smallest amount of joy on his countenance, “Come on, let’s go see what Mum and Dad have in store for us tonight.”
Elaina nodded happily offering a final squeeze to his hand before releasing her grip on him and following him towards the large meadow where Charlus and Dorea were already waiting for them with their wands in hand and smiles on their faces.
As the duo approached Charlus said, “Elaina, you're up.”
Her eyes widened in surprise immediately as Dorea stepped forward to meet her, “Tonight we will all duel to get a feel for what we should work on over the holidays. The best way for us to see that is to push you in the duel. All magic is allowed, though I will be quite put out if you try to use anything too dark on me.”
“You don’t want to see Mum put out.” Harry warned, “It's not a good experience.”
Charlus nodded gravely while Elaina swallowed hard, “Good to know.”
Dorea offered the girl a nod before strolling across the field. Harry glanced from his mother to his father before turning to the girl, “Just have fun out there. Mum won’t hurt you, though her magic can be quite frightening at times. Don’t lose your head out there. Stick to your shields, speed, and dodge if you can.”
“Enjoy the experience.” Charlus advised, “Dueling with an Order of Merlin First-Class holder is an honor.”
The man offered the words in partial jest, but Elaina seemed encouraged by his words. Straightening up the girl nodded resolutely and Harry jogged towards his Dad to clear the way. Charlus then called out, “Ladies, begin when ready.”
No sooner had he finished speaking Dorea’s wand was in motion. The familiar fluidity in which she cast still amazed Harry, and clearly Elaina was having trouble finding a defensive rhythm right out of the gate. Charlus spoke quietly beside Harry, “I don’t think she expected Dorea’s aggression.”
“I warned her Mum was amazing with her wand.” Harry assured him, “You both must have been training hard. Mum looks sharper than usual.”
Charlus nodded, “We are preparing for our next encounter with the Death Eaters.”
Elaina apparated in a huff of frustration and released a massive blasting curse that Harry was quite familiar with, but Dorea deflected it to the side while sending an impressive throttling charm right back at Elaina who dispelled the charm and whipped her wand around like a whip sending a piercing hex right back. Charlus muttered his approval of her speed and power causing Harry to nod with pride in his friend.
“What do you think will happen next? His attacks on the muggle communities are simply cowardice and not amounting to anything. Do you think we discouraged this Dark Lord that much in Godric’s Hollow?” Charlus asked.
“I think he is training his followers.” Harry said watching as Elaina fought in a battle that was becoming more and more aggressive, “He wants them to use their numbers and surprise to their advantage so if they come against wizarding resistance they crush them. Imagine had just you, Mum, and Fleamont stood against them in Godric’s Hollow.”
“We would’ve managed.” Charlus defended.
“At the cost of the village. You would’ve survived.” Harry corrected, “Fact is you wouldn’t have been able to defend the village and your own lives. You inspired resistance though. By the time Elaina and I showed up we were able to mount a proper defense and fight back. To my knowledge, nothing like that happened in my time.”
Charlus grunted at that revelation, “What about the Aurors?”
“I think it should first be mentioned that there is obvious corruption down that line somewhere. We fought for twenty minutes, and had the better part of an hour to put the village back together before the Aurors arrived. Even if they did though they haven’t been granted the ability to fight back properly. Every enemy they would stun could be revived and brought back into the fight.” Harry explained, “They were also showing up to chaos and having to fight the crowd fleeing and the Death Eaters arriving. They did it at the World Cup in 94. It was ugly.”
Grimacing Charlus and Harry both flinched at the impact curse that tossed Elaina backwards Dorea had her disarmed before she even hit the ground. Catching the girl’s wand Dorea apparated to stand above the girl but before she could offer her assistance Elaina rolled over to her side and pushed both hands out yelling in exertion sending Dorea flying backwards dropping both wands.
Harry and Charlus both looked on in shock, but before Elaina could mount an offensive or even get her wand back Dorea was back on her feet, summoning her wand to her hand and stunning the girl for good measure.
Dorea looked at Harry in surprise, “You taught her wandless relashio?”
“That wasn’t me. That was a trick she had kept up her own sleeve.” Harry said in defense.
The woman nodded, looking impressed, while Charlus muttered, “Not bad at all.”
Dorea went over to the girl and revived her and helped her to her feet. She offered quiet advice as Charlus and Harry watched the two women who both ended up laughing as Dorea put an arm around the girl dragging her in their direction.
“Your turn, Charlus.”
The man nodded at his wife and Elaina’s eyes went wide. Harry grinned at her, “This is what you wanted. Are you still able to fight?”
“If you want to be great you need to be able to.” Dorea advised before she could answer, “You never know when unfavorable terms will fall into your lap. It is no secret that my husband is more powerful than Harry or I as well. Unfavorable is the only way to describe what happens next.”
“Gee Mum, that was inspiring.” Harry muttered as Elaina paled slightly.
Elaina however shook her head looking determined, “I will make him respect me.”
“Good girl.” Dorea said happily watching as the young woman stalked out into the field picking up her wand and taking up a respectful distance away from the war hero.
“That girl has a fire in her blood.” Dorea said admiringly.
Harry grinned at his Mum who had barely broken a sweat against his friend, “I know. It’s why I have enjoyed training with her so much. She gets in her head for only a moment before she resolves herself.”
This time when Dorea called out to begin, Charlus stayed perfectly still and Elaina eyed the man warily before taking a deep breath and launching into a string of curses. Dorea shook her head, “Curses will never land on Charlus. She is going to have to be creative.”
Before they knew it the world was bending and transfigurations that Harry scarcely imagined before meeting Charlus were swarming Elaina. The girl apparated in a panic while incinerating the incoming conjurations with a blast of fire and pushing them toward her attacker. Dorea complimented, “She has good reflexes and a decent head on her shoulder. Her ability to stay in the fight is admirable. She is good for you, Harry.”
Charlus swirled his wand banishing the fire, but a blast of an electric charge resembling lightning flew from Elaina’s wand causing Harry’s eyes to widen as his father reached out with one hand to stop it in mid-air.
Elaina froze at the sight of it before shielding for her life as the blast was deflected back at her making a gong-like sound. Harry and Dorea both grimaced before he said, “It’s not like that Mum.”
“Why is that exactly?” She questioned as the duel continued, “The chemistry is undeniable. She is quite beautiful. Powerful. Instinctively protective of you and you of her. You have killed to protect her. Brought her to our family. What am I missing?”
“The trust.” Harry grunted out as Charlus began to grin at the girl who was giving it all she had.
“You don’t trust her?” She asked not sounding alarmed at all.
“We haven’t trusted each other.” Harry responded, “We are both obviously hiding things about our past.”
“Charlus and I have been looking into that.” Dorea admitted freely.
Harry looked at the woman in surprise, now ignoring the duel in front of them, “What?”
“The story she gave us in Hogsmeade had holes that we couldn’t ignore. We have learned a lot, but not everything.” Dorea answered calmly. Reading the surprise on her son's face she put a hand on his arm, “You didn’t think we would allow someone into our home, offer them our families protection, and allow her to train with us without looking into them did you?”
“What did you learn? Anything I should know?” Harry asked.
“Yes.” She said simply, “But that is for you two to work out. You said there is no trust? Fix that. Nothing we have learned indicates that the girl is a bad person. There are things we are not particularly thrilled about, but nothing that alarms us to the point that we would ask you to step away from the girl.”
Harry thought deeply for a moment trying to think of holes in the girl's story from before. When nothing came to mind Harry shook his head, “You think I should tell her about my past?”
“You have come this far with the girl. Open up to each other. You have put each other’s lives in the other hands. That kind of trust is far beyond the secrets the two of you are keeping from each other.” Dorea confessed, patting her son on the shoulder, “Think about it. You are about to spend the next two weeks beside this girl. If there are any doubts left by the time you go back to school then maybe it wasn’t meant to be.”
The words echoed around in his mind as his mother turned her attention back to the duel. He knew she was right, but his curiosity to know what his parents had learned was near palpable. As was his concern as to what holes in the story they picked up on.
As the young man tuned back into the duel Elaina was looking exhausted now, while Charlus was lazily tossing magic around. This was little more than a test for the girl at this point. Harry had been given this test before too. It was brutal, but his father had told him that he had learned more about Harry magically in that duel than he had in all the others combined.
In the end. Elaina stopped casting, looking dead on her feet. She had tried everything, but nothing was going to breach the defenses of Charlus Potter. At last, the man disarmed her and bound her in ropes that were transfigured from the grass below her feet.
Harry and Dorea clapped politely as they all approached the girl who yielded immediately. When they released her and gave her the wand back she merely sat in the grass, “Harry you may be powerful, but your Dad is terrifying.”
Dorea chuckled, “I didn’t use much of my family magic, but you can believe that you will see some of it over your stay here. If Arcturus joins us you get a glance at what terrifying magic will look like. At least when Charlus beats you he is nice about it.”
“Speak for yourself.” Harry grumbled, “Dad launched me about 10 meters back in our last outing. Nothing nice about that.”
“Glad you feel that way, sport. You are up.” Charlus prompted.
Mumbling to himself the words his mom had spoken to him echoed around in his mind as he tried to mentally prepare himself for the duel ahead. Resolving himself for the challenges that lay before him however, he cleared his mind and tried to focus on one issue at a time.

Chapter 37
Waking up the next day in the Scottish Highlands was a winter wonderland that brought a smile to Harry’s face. The thought of going home and spending the next few weeks with his family was something that put butterflies in his stomach. It would be his first holiday season with his family and was immensely looking forward to it. The thought of Elaina joining him over the holidays put a touch of anxiety over the matter, but he knew the time to give his friend a small insight into his past was coming.
The Slytherin Common Room was full of people as he made his way downstairs with his things shrunk down into his cloak pocket. Arriving in the Common Room people created a path for him as if he carried some type of plague. This had been happening since his duel on the grounds over a month ago, and after Elaina throttled Rabastan last night the same whispers now carried on about her. The two had become even more prominent than before and Harry was starting to wonder who next might take a shot at cursing one of them in the back.
The path that his eyes followed was to his small group of four Slytherin friends, however, all of whom seemed to be in good spirits. Pandora was wearing a hideous Christmas sweater that definitely made Harry think of Luna. A gift from Xenophillius Harry thought with certainty. Nate and Andi were both in travel robes with small emblems of their family embedded into their lapels. Harry supposed this was a Pureblood tradition at this time because he noted many others around the room were wearing something similar. Elaina for her part remained in her Slytherin robes and offered Harry a smile as he greeted them. Inwardly the young man noted the girl seemed to smile a lot more since they had delved deeper into their training together. The girl was not so unlike him, at times that was almost painfully clear.
Andi offered him a sly grin, “You two excited to spend the holidays together?”
The raising of her eyebrows was suggestive, but Harry didn’t rise to it, “Well we would be disappointed if you didn’t at least make one appearance at Potter Manor. I am sure we will get tired of hexing each other at some point.”
Defensively raising her hands she said, “Well I wouldn’t want to intrude on your time together.”
Rolling his eyes Harry said, “You are all welcome at Potter Manor if we want to gather around Christmas as a group.”
Pandora offered him a bright smile, “It would be nice to be among friends over the holidays. Xeno has so few family members left, and my family isn’t exactly rolling out the welcome wagon for me.”
Nate grimaced at his cousin's words, “You did tell the Lord of our house, my father, that you cared little for his opinion when it came to matters of the heart.”
“That was as respectful as I could manage to portray my feelings over the matter.” Pandora said defensively, “Trust me had I told the man what I really thought we probably would have drawn wands over the matter.”
Pandora flipped her hair over her shoulder and held her head high over the matter and Harry grinned, “I don’t think I’ve ever heard this story.”
Andromeda shuddered, “There isn’t much to it. Pandora came from a sacred 28 family and marrying into another that could barely be classified as Pureblood caused quite the stir. Doing it the day she turned seventeen just led to more excitement. I think she was lucky Lord Greengrass didn’t strike her from the family. I am certain that it is what my fate would be if my mother and father didn’t decide to kill me first.”
Darkly, Harry remembered what had happened when she had decided to run off with Ted Tonks in his timeline. She was exactly right, but he was unaware of what the fallout may have been like with her parents. Pandora however scoffed, “I may not have been stricken from the family, but I was told I was on my own. My last year of Hogwarts had already been paid for, but other than that…there wasn’t exactly a dowry for my wedding with Xeno. Regardless of that, I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I love him, and that’s all there is to it.”
“We can’t all be as brave as you Dora.” Andromeda muttered so quietly Harry was certain only he had heard it.
As the group began making their way out towards the grounds where the train would await Pandora asked, “So Andi, what is a Black family Christmas like? Do you sacrifice muggles and hang them on the tree?”
Nate snorted while Harry cringed at the thought, making Andi chuckle darkly, “Not until Boxing Day!”
The group laughed while Andi sighed, “No, it used to be more pleasant before Bellatrix went off and got married. My sisters and I would spend the morning with our parents and then we would go off to my grandfathers for dinner. Walburga would be her usual obnoxious self, but she was usually slightly less unpleasant on Christmas. Now with Bella gone, Sirius having run away, and the family divided on this supposed Heir of Slytherin, I can't imagine a peaceful holiday.”
“I think my family is having Lord Black over on Christmas Night for a family dinner. If you expressed your desire to spend the evening with your grandparents maybe you could escape the mutiny.” Harry offered consolingly.
“I will think about it.” Andi said with a grateful look, “I just don’t want to leave Cissy behind.”
Nate rolled his eyes at this, “Your sister is probably the golden child of the family at this point. I hear she is in talks with Lucius Malfoy.”
Pandora shuddered, “That pig is like 5 years older than her. He has to already be twenty?”
“Twenty one I think.” Nate supplied.
“There could definitely be worse matches for her.” Andi said unsympathetically.
“Any thoughts on who they might betroth you too?” Elaina asked curiously.
Shaking her head she took a deep breath before saying, “Grandfather has been kind to me on the matter. My sisters both wanted to get married and be spoiled by their husbands. I don’t have that desire. I like my freedom. I know I can’t keep it forever, and even my grandfather's patience will only go so far, but I don’t know. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are hoping Harry here will sweep me off my feet.”
Harry nearly stumbled at her words and looked at her with wide eyes, making Pandora and Nate laugh, “Am I that repulsive to you, Potter?”
Feeling hot at Andromeda’s question Harry tugged at his robes around the neck. “Not at all. What makes you think that though?”
Andi shrugged, “It just makes sense. We are of similar age. Just distant enough in relation that the Black’s would jump at it. You’re powerful. My grandfather is your father’s best friend. I will be watching my drinks for amortentia over the holidays. I wouldn’t put it past someone in my family to try it.”
“Bloody hell. Well if you come back professing your undying love to me I will know to have Lily brew you an antidote.” Harry answered sarcastically.
As the group reached the carriages surrounded by the rest of the chattering students of Hogwarts Andi joked, “Just don’t curse me too hard If I try to snog you.”
“No promises.” Elaina said, chiming in, causing the group to laugh.
Harry glanced at the girl with a grin, and she just bumped him as they took their seats in the carriage. There had been something unspoken between them these last few weeks. A sort of charge Harry couldn’t quite place his finger on. He had little doubt what the energy meant, because it was something he had felt before, but both knew that the secrets between them stood in their way. Their friends had undoubtedly picked up on it, and the subtle jabs had originally made them both color in the cheeks, but it had become something of a game to them now.
The young time traveler wasn’t sure what to make of his situation. On one hand, it would be nice to tell someone outside the family his secret, or at least tell Elaina something about his past, but another part of him felt guilty. If anyone deserved the right to know it was James. Had the Potter Heir stepped up and taken a mature mindset in their training over the last month Harry had little doubt he would’ve told James everything over the holiday. Now he was needing a new confidant, and Elaina had risen to the occasion since they had practically met. The underlying fear of James telling the other Marauders everything lingered in his mind as well. There was no way of knowing exactly how far Peter was entrenched with the Death Eaters at this time if he was at all. It was not a chance he was willing to risk, and his cold nature to the boy had undoubtedly caused a small rift between him and the others.
The Marauders couldn’t understand what the rat in his timeline had cost him. He remembered the warning he had received from Fleamont while he was passing into this timeline, but he could not find it in his heart to forgive the man that shared the same face as his parents' betrayer. It had been easy originally, but as time went on, and they interacted regularly it became more and more difficult. Harry found himself drifting away from the group, and unwilling to engage them in conversation without the urge to throttle the traitor becoming overwhelming. Perhaps with more time, and a load taken off his shoulders that could change.
The dark thoughts of what he faced carried over when the group approached the thestrals leading the carriage that would take them down to Hogsmeade. He could hardly see the creatures without thinking of his friend Luna, a young woman who had comforted him at a time when he had felt so alone. Glancing to Pandora who seemed so carefree he fought back the familiar sting of loss that took him into thoughts of home. It was hard to differentiate the young woman from the girl he called a friend in his time.
For the first time, Harry found himself grateful that Andromeda did not look so similar to her daughter. The two were very different witches, and while Harry was happy to have the girl as a friend he was glad to not have the constant reminder of Tonks in his mind. His connection to Nate and Elaina was a breath of fresh air as well. The two were so distant from everything that happened in his time that at the very least he was not haunted by his visions of the past.
Arriving at the express the group entered the train without pause and began searching for an empty compartment. The express’ occupants were tingling with excited energy by the time it took off and the small group was settled.
Quiet conversations of holiday plans passed among the group until a knock on the door disrupted them. With a flick of his wrist, Harry lazily opened the door revealing a grinning James at the door, “Morning my fine-scaled snakes. I’m looking for my handsome devil of a twin cousin.”
Rolling his eyes Harry stood to greet the boy, “Hey Prongs. Been a while since we spoke.”
The tension in the room caused the occupants to shuffle slightly, but James kept the grin on his face, “Well you know, being Head Boy is not all it's chalked up to be. It’s busy work.”
Trying to diffuse the situation James turned to Elaina, “I hear you will be camping out at Potter Manor for the holidays. With Sirius staying with us I think he will be glad to have another refuge to make him feel less out of place on Christmas day. Thanks for that.”
Elaina offered the young man a nod, but said nothing as she watched Harry just stare at James. Feeling the discomfort James rubbed the back of his neck, “Are we going to do some flying over the holidays, Harry?”
“Sure, James.” Harry said evenly.
“Well, I’m looking forward to it.” The Head Boy said grasping for anything to make it less awkward.
Taking a deep breath Harry offered him an assuring nod, “Me too.”
The rest of the compartment watched for a moment before James forced a cough, “Anyways better get back to my rounds. See you later, Harry. Happy Christmas everyone.”
Another nod and Harry closed the door behind his cousin before sighing. Andi was the first to break the silence, “Merlin Harry. What was that all about?”
“It’s a long story.” Harry said, “I am just not quite sure what’s going on with him. He looked at us like we were the bad guys last night in the dueling club, and he has been dodging me the back half of the term. Now he is suddenly trying to play nice and talk to me before we come under the eyes of the family.”
Nate frowned at his friend's words, “That’s odd. Did things get weird after Quidditch? I noticed him and the other Marauders started hanging back a little more after that.”
“Maybe he is uncomfortable that his crush is getting close to us snakes, but he hasn’t managed it.” Pandora added helpfully.
Harry grimaced at that conclusion. The last thing he needed was for James to continue thinking that there was something between him and Lily. It would explain why he had been distant. Maybe he had misunderstood the separation. Everything had seemed fine until Lily and Elaina went to Hogsmeade together. Harry had even been working on the Patronus with the two seventh-year girls since then.
Flashback
At the first sight of snow, Harry had led Elaina and Lily into the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom with the permission of Professor Black to work on the Patronus charm. The man had stated his door was open to his use as long as they weren’t going to be casting spells at each other or do anything that could cause damage to his classroom. This meant that after class one day the trio had stayed behind leading to many curious glances, particularly from the Marauders. Harry would have to be blind to miss the fact that Snape was also staring loathingly at him as he began conversing with the two females.
After giving his promises Harry had been under the watchful eyes of his two female friends from the time the class emptied. With his wand in hand he took a deep breath before meeting the eyes of his mother first, “I think you both know that the charm we are about to attempt is well beyond the ordinary wizarding level. The Patronus charm was designed to beat dementors, but to this day wizards have not produced a consistent way to kill them. I am unsure what efforts have been made in that arena, but I can assure you the patronus will suffice if you were to encounter a dementor or a lethifold.”
Before the question could be posed about his encounters with the creatures Harry flicked his wand saying the incantation as clearly as he could “Expecto Patronum.”
Effortlessly a misty stag materialized and seemed to solidify as he held the charm allowing the creature to prance around the room in search of a reason for its call to arms. Lily seemed amazed by the spell and stepped forward to analyze the beast with her wand in hand. With her free hand, she reached out to touch the creature stating, “It’s warm. Is this what magical saturation feels like? I’ve been told some witches and wizards can sense that kind of thing?”
Elaina, who seemed emboldened by her friend's words, stepped forward and placed her hand on the large antler creature. Harry watched in curiosity as his training partner swirled her wand absent-mindedly before saying, “Yes, this is what it feels like. Everyone’s magic feels different, but this feels very much like Harry's. It feels safe.”
“At the heart of the charm you are creating a guardian.” Harry confirmed as Lily looked over to him as if she had forgotten there were two other people in the room with her, “My patronus is something very personal to me, and he is my protector. As you both probably have heard I can also send messages with mine, which is something I can teach you after you perfect the charm.”
“How do we do it?” Lily asked, turning her fascination back to the stag that was slowly dissolving into thin air.
“Happiness and practice.” Harry answered carefully, “You need a memory. A very happy memory. Powerful to you specifically. You need to recreate the memory in your mind and breathe in the sights, sounds, and emotions you felt during that moment. When you exhale, say the words, and see your progress.”
Both girls frowned at his explanation, Lily asked, “That’s it?”
“If there is more to it my professor didn’t know it.” Harry admitted, “He was kind of an expert on these things, but of course, there could be other ways to do it. My boggart used to be a dementor, and that was how I practiced, how I overcame the fear.”
“What memory do you use, Harry?” Elaina asked quietly as she stared towards the windows now seemingly unwilling to meet his eyes.
It hadn’t occurred to Harry that this question might surprise him. In his previous life, he always thought of spending time with Lily and James. Getting to know them. Having a life with them. The first memory that took him to the promised land was not even real. It was just an imaginary concept of his parents talking to him. While he was certain that his family must have spoken to him while he was a baby he had no recollection of that. He didn’t know what his father's voice sounded like until James walked in to meet him at Potter Manor, while the only concept of his mother's voice was when he heard her screaming his name after his first encounter with a dementor
Now his memory had shifted instinctually. When he thought of happiness he thought of Potter Manor. He thought of his family. He thought of the friends he made, and he thought about the future he could have with his parents. Even though James and Lily Potter in this world may never come to know what he sacrificed, what they sacrificed, he would still be grateful for the opportunity he was given to be with them. Even if his life was shorter than he liked it to be. Every day since he woke up had been a gift, a gift that he had to enjoy until his last day.
“Harry?” Lily prompted softly.
Turning to face the green eyes that were so similar to his he offered her a smile, “I think of my family…and I think of my time with my friends.”
Lily’s countenance seemed to brighten as she nodded quickly and took her first attempt at casting the spell without hardly any hesitation. No results right away, but Harry offered verbal encouragement before turning to Elaina who seemed to be staring at her wand with worry.
Stepping towards the girl to give Lily some space to practice he asked, “What is it?”
“If this is just a happy memory, why is the charm so difficult?” Elaina asked in a quiet tone.
“The power behind the emotion would be my guess.” Harry said with a soft sigh, “My first few attempts were pitiful. I thought about my first bits of magic, I thought about my first time riding a broom, and the dementor knocked me out three times before I pulled it under my control.”
Elaina seemed to analyze his words carefully and her blue and green eyes seemed darker than usual, so he offered a tip, “Why don’t you settle on a memory, and I can offer advice from there?”
Seeming to consider his words for a moment she finally nodded and Harry took a step back to give her some space as she echoed the words, “Expecto Patronum.”
In the few weeks they had worked on the charm Lily had managed a mist that definitely could not repel a real dementor and Elaina had produced nothing at all. In their spare time, they had begun practicing their wandless spells, but that was as slow going as their new charm project. Elaina had seemed particularly discouraged, and Harry hoped he could share a little bit about his past over the break so he could give her a few more helpful hints. He couldn’t very well go into the details of the memories that first helped him break through with the charm as is, but one day soon he hoped to be able to.
As they approached Kings Cross Ted Tonks had boldly knocked on the compartment door requesting to speak with Andi, and the girl was out of the compartment so fast Harry had chuckled. Nate for his part however shook his head saying, “That’s one brave man. If the Blacks ever found out a Muggle-born was even interested in one of their daughters he would likely be found strung up in Knockturn Alley somewhere.”
Pandora and Elaina had chuckled at his words, but Harry grimaced at the thought, remembering exactly how Ted Tonks had gone in his world. He could only hope that Arcturus in this world could be reasoned with when the time came. Perhaps he could even give the man some insight into the witch Nymphadora Tonks could become. She was great without the Black family magic or family intervention, she could be amazing with the right guidance.
It wasn’t long before the Express had arrived in King’s Cross, and Harry was taking deep breaths feeling his excitement for returning home. As what was left of the group disembarked the train Harry took in the excited faces of family greeting their children. It was a pleasant scene in comparison to what he had last witnessed in his sixth year at Kings Cross. Dumbledore had just been killed and the Express had only remained long enough for the funeral to take place before whisking the students of Hogwarts across the countryside. Parents had been rushing their kids off the platform and in some cases out of the country with the death of the leader of the light. With Dumbledore gone most people saw that as an invitation for Voldemort to conquer the nation, and they were right. Seeing this sight now lifted his mood as he observed families embracing across the area.
Harry knew his parents would be on the platform today for safety reasons more than anything, but the young time traveler had his own mission to accomplish before he could meet with them.
Searching for familiar red hair Harry dragged Elaina down the platform as they exchanged holiday greetings with classmates in passing. Harry had spotted Amelia exchanging hugs with a young man in a uniform who couldn’t be much older than they were now. Susan’s father, Edgar Bones, Harry thought briefly. The man and his wife would leave behind a young child after they were murdered by Death Eaters just before his parents had been killed. He remembered Moody briefly mentioning just how great the wizard and his whole family were, and by the look of the man’s outfit, he guessed that Amelia had followed her brother into the Auror program after graduation. Harry wondered what had come of the Bones family, but continued glancing around spotting Frank embracing a familiar Harfang Longbottom down the way. When the two had separated Harfang embraced Alice as if she were already family and a small grin crossed Harry’s face.
Finding his intended target he spotted Lily embracing both her parents at the same time and the two looked quite content to see their daughter. Swallowing hard, Harry memorized the faces of his young grandparents. He was uncertain as to how they had died, but he was certain that his aunt Petunia did not have a good relationship with them by the time they had passed. There were no pictures of his grandparents, nor had he grown up hearing stories of them. The acceptance of Lily’s magical gifts had clearly created a massive rift in the family, but the handsome couple made Harry’s heart pound a little faster.
His grandmother didn’t have Lily’s red hair, but oh did she have her eyes. The brunette woman couldn’t have been a day over 40, and her youthful face was free of wrinkles and only held a large satisfied smile for her daughter. The man was stout and could’ve been an athlete with his size. Harry recognized the look of a soldier and wondered if his maternal grandfather had been in the service.
Approaching the couple cautiously, Harry had long planned his entrance into the conversation and greeted Lily casually, “Lily, I just wanted to wish you a Happy Christmas before we left. I also wanted to give you something.”
Reaching into his robes he pulled out a shrunken book from his pocket. It was something he had written to his father about, and the man agreed to send him a copy of 100 Essential Charms by Abraham Ronen, “The author was a charms professor from earlier in the Century. I would have sent it to you for Yule, but I don’t trust owls.”
Lily offered him a large grateful smile embracing the boy immediately, “Thank you, Harry! I hope my owl makes it to you, because I planned a gift for you as well. I sent both you and Elaina’s gift to Potter Manor.”
When the two separated the man behind Lily cleared his throat and the younger redhead blushed saying, “Sorry Dad, Harry these are my parents, my mother Iris Evans, and my father Jonathon Evans. Mum, Dad, these are my friends Elaina Essex, and Harry Potter.”
Harry offered his hand to the large man who swooped his up with a powerful grip, “Harry Potter? Any relation to the miscreant that keeps harassing my daughter?”
Harry and Elaina both chuckled while the young man said, “My cousin I am afraid.”
Lily defended the boy instantly, “Harry is nothing like James, but I have to admit James has been a lot better this year.”
Harry wanted to brighten at the compliment his father had received, but his qualms with the man kept him from getting too excited. When Harry traded places with Elaina to shake his grandmother's hands a flash of familiarity crossed her face when they locked eyes. His heart pounded as he attempted to choke the words out in a normal fashion, “Nice to meet you, Mrs. Evans.”
The woman looked questioningly at him and did not release his hand nor return his greeting. Instead, the woman stared at his face and seemed to be trying to memorize his features as if she knew something of great importance about him. The moment became longer and longer while Harry froze his heart speeding up far beyond normal now. The voice of Jonathan Evans seemed to bring it to a halt, however, “Iris?”
The woman immediately shook out of it and released his hand, “Pleased to meet you, Harry. Forgive me you remind me of someone who I have not seen in many years.”
The moment stalled again and Harry smiled and looked away from the woman. Looking at Lily the redhead was staring at her mother in confusion while Jonathon Evans was now staring heavily, searching his features as if he were trying to determine the familiarity. Lily thankfully saved the awkward moment by saying, “Well anyways, happy holidays to you both. I will see you both after the new year.”
The two said quiet goodbyes as Lily dragged her parents away casting a final look at Harry before they passed through the barrier. Elaina blew out a breath of air, “What was that about, Harry?”
“I wouldn’t even know where to begin explaining that.” Harry said quietly.
Instead of lingering on the topic, Harry dragged Elaina to his family who had watched the scene from a distance. Dorea had an understanding smile on her face and moved to embrace her son as they approached. Dorea wasted no time in releasing her son and embracing Elaina saying, “Charlus and I have so much fun planned for us over the break! We can hardly wait to share our plans with you.”
“Sounds great mum, I can’t wait.” Harry said happily as he felt his Dad slip an arm around his shoulders in a friendly greeting, “Where are Uncle Monty and Aunt Mia?”
Harry’s question got a shrug from his father, “I believe James and those troublesome boys had lunch plans before they went separate ways for the holidays. They can apparate, so I am sure my brother and sister are lounging around in Godric’s Hollow enjoying the snow.”
Nodding in understanding Harry asked, “Are we ready?”
Charlus eyed the platform up and down and seemed to note that the area was clearing out slowly but surely, and the odds of an attack decreased by the second. Nodding his head Charlus said, “We are. We will see you at home Harry.”
With that, the two Potters vanished and Harry offered his arm to Elaina with a smile, “Ready?”
The dark-haired girl offered him a shy smile taking his arm and Harry pushed the two across the country with a slight twirl looking forward to their holiday together.

(A/N) Guys if you haven't voted on the Poll and want to do make sure you do it by the end of the day. The Poll closes tomorrow at 12pm CST. Thank you, and enjoy!
Chapter 36
It had been an unpleasant surprise to find James dodging him till the end of term. The young man seemed to always make an excuse to avoid being around Harry longer than necessary. At first the time traveler didn’t think much of it, but soon he began to suspect that James was not yet ready to commit to their training. It was becoming frustrating on Harry’s part. It was clear James wanted to be brave, but he didn’t have the proper push to step into that arena with his cousin.
James’ words on the Quidditch pitch the evening before the match, and his words in the Three Broomsticks echoed in Harry’s mind, but he was unsure what step he should take next. He didn’t want to push the young man into something he wasn’t ready for, but also knew he had risen to the challenge once before. Ultimately the decision to ask for his family's opinions on the matter over the holidays was the conclusion he settled on, but the thoughts continuously swirled through his mind.
Elaina had committed full-time to train with Harry in the mornings, and by the time the end of the term had come around the girl was becoming quite the marvel. She seemed tired, often, and Harry wished if James was going to refuse to train with him then he would say it aloud so he could shift Elaina back to their nighttime training. Harry had learned over the last few weeks that his best friend in Slytherin didn’t sleep very well at night, and he was beginning to suspect the early mornings were taking a toll on her.
Shaking these thoughts aside he stood next to Elaina in the dueling club for his first-ever appearance. In the front of the room, Professor Flitwick and Black had been giving a demonstration of a common chain spell that the students could try. Many of the students looked enraptured by the lesson. Harry could see many of the younger years whispering in awe at the simple magic being performed, while others seemed to be anticipating the start of the day's duels, hardly paying attention to the lesson at all.
Harry could admit that the Great Hall was quite impressive in this formation. Despite the Christmas decorations in the hall and the cozy feelings the warm fireplaces brought there was a certain gleam of nervous energy in the air. Harry was unsure if that was due to their presence or if people just eagerly anticipated dueling every session.
Dozens of smaller-than-standard dueling platforms lined the halls and layers of wards seemed to coat the room. It was unlike anything Harry had ever seen during his time at Hogwarts. Not for the first time Harry wondered just why the club had been discontinued, and why when it resumed in his second year did it not go back to the way it had been.
Whispers had been going around the room since he arrived with Elaina at his side, but both wore emotionless expressions on their faces. Their friends had been the most surprised to see them as neither had mentioned their intention to join tonight's session. Their Gryffindor friends seemed near worried about their arrival and when the demonstration was over Lily came straight over to them, “Harry, Elaina, how nice of you both to join us. Didn’t think I would ever see you both here.”
Elaina nodded, offering the girl the slightest smile. The two had really struck up a friendship over the last month. The weekend after the Quidditch match Lily and Elaina had walked the length of Hogsmeade discussing magic and what was covered in the training sessions with Harry. Everywhere they went whispers seemed to follow, but the two no longer cared. They had been bound by blood. Their friendship seemed to only increase overtime, and Harry was happy for the two. He had seen Elaina, Pandora, and Andi, sitting with Lily, Alice, and Amelia in Hogsmeade that evening, which brought a smile to his face as he passed through with Nate, Kingsley, and Ted Tonks.
When they had walked out of the pub that evening Nate just whistled quietly, “That’s a lot of power and beauty at one table.”
Ted, the quiet Muggleborn that Harry had nearly no classes with just chuckled, “Anyone of them could crush you, Greengrass.”
Harry and Kingsley both chuckled at the sputtering Purebloods response but didn’t give him too much trouble. According to Andromeda Nate and Amelia were seeing each other quietly. Knowing it wasn’t his business though Harry had said nothing to either of the Pureblood heirs.
Shaking out of his thoughts Harry offered the Head Girl a smile, “We are just here to settle a score. Besides its nearly Yule time, gift giving and forgiveness are supposed to be on the menu.”
Lily looked at the pair with trepidation as Elaina eyed Rabastan Lestrange across the hall who was staring at the pair murderously. Ever since the Slytherin boys had returned from their suspension they had done nothing but glare at the duo. Regardless of that, Harry knew they were all itching to have a go at either of them, despite the fear holding them back from trying.
It was Harry’s understanding that anyone could present a challenge in the dueling club. Of course, some just came to watch and work on the techniques that the various professors shared while others went around challenging one another. Any student could refuse a challenge, but it wouldn’t be a good look. That went doubly for a Pureblood being challenged by a Muggleborn, something that Elaina was completely aware of.
Frank and Alice were the next to approach the two Slytherins. Frank had been asking Harry to duel for the better part of a month now, but had been unable to lock in a time to train together. Harry had observed the boy becoming upset in the Great Hall on more than one occasion as reports continuously came from the Muggle world about attacks on the general population. The young man seemed to become more and more determined to make a difference as the day went by, and Harry was more than happy to guide one of his best mates' father if it meant the man might get to live to see his son grow up one day.
Frank had approached the trio with a smile, but as he observed his friend a frown crossed his face, “Alright there Harry? You two look like you mean business. I had hoped you were here to duel with me.”
Offering the man a nod of his head in respect Harry just placed a hand on his shoulder, “We can, but I need to observe something first. Elaina, whenever you are ready.”
The dark-haired girl didn’t hesitate at his words as she strode forward. Many eyes in the hall were on her, and Harry glanced to see all four Marauders glancing at her with wide eyes. Frank stepped to stand beside Harry whispering quietly, “Are you sure this is a good idea? I know that she is good, but Rabastan is dangerous, Harry. The little prick has been cursing younger students-”
“Elaina is going to put Rabastan in his place for using the Cruciatas curse on her.” Harry interrupted, “She has been training with me, and I am beyond confident in her abilities to destroy the little coward. I would bet any amount of gold that Elaina is about to be relentless in the fight that will follow. Stand close to me, and I will tell you about some tactics her and I have been working on that I bet we will see.”
Rabastan had been standing with Mulciber and Yaxley, the trio had all stopped their conversation however as Elaina approached them. It seemed all conversation had stopped when she stood within spitting distance of the group with her wand in hand. The tension in the room spiked for a moment as Harry observed her stare down the Slytherin seventh years before she cleared her throat, “Rabastan Lestrange, I challenge you. If you aren’t afraid to face me one on one.”
Rabastan growled out, stepping closer to the girl, “You think I am afraid of you little Mudblood?”
Professor Flitwick who was observing the showdown immediately called out, “Twenty points from Slytherin and detention with me tomorrow night Lestrange. We do not use that vulgar language in this school.”
To Rabastans credit he didn’t even glance at the little professor who was now moving towards the group. Elaina however flicked her dark hair over her shoulder, “If you aren’t afraid then I suggest accepting my challenge.”
“I’m surprised you aren’t having your boyfriend stepping in to fight for you again.” Mulciber goaded.
“I don’t need Harry to take on the likes of any of you.” Elaina said, placing her hands behind her back and in her right hand.
Harry recognized the tactic as one he had displayed before. It gave the impression of being defenseless, but in reality, a shield could be brought up at a moment's notice, or the rotation of the body to dodge would be all too easy. It was an easy goading tactic to make your opponent feel inferior.
Flitwick was now standing beside Elaina looking at the Slytherins expectantly, “Well Mr. Lestrange, do you accept the challenge from Miss Essex, yes or no?”
Rabastan gritted his teeth and stepped nearly nose to nose with Elaina, “I’m not interested in dueling with the kiddy gloves on.”
Professor Black gruffed from the sideline, “Then we will allow the use of all non-lethal magic. We will create a bigger platform and we can put this squabble to rest.”
“I agree and believe it is necessary.” Professor Flitwick said, crossing his small arms, “What do you say Mr. Lestrange? Are you prepared to bury the hatchet?”
“They buried my brother.” The young man seethed, nearly spittling with rage, “I will never let that go. My family should have slaughtered theirs.”
“I can’t speak to your family's politics.” Professor Black said raising his hand to indicate he should be silent, “What I can speak to is the fact that there is bad blood here. We see it in class, we see it in the hall, and quite frankly I am sick of it. Here is a chance for the two of you to work out some frustration and determine who the better witch or wizard is once and for all in a relatively safe manner. If you are not going to accept the challenge from Miss Essex then let us move on.”
The hall whispered as the drama unfolded, while Harry just stood beside his Gryffindor friends watching closely. Elaina for her part had not fidgeted or showed anything other than supreme confidence, something Harry was quite proud of. The girl he first met was still there. Despite having come out of her quiet place this term she could still be the emotionless stonewall he first met. Her magic was nearly palpable to Harry in anticipation. He suspected none of the seventh-year Slytherins had much of an aptitude for sensing magic, because if they did they would likely be much more cautious to have a conflict with his friend.
A long pause passed before Rabastan spat on the floor in disgust, “Fine. I accept the challenge.”
Elaina nodded and turned her back on the boy, locking eyes with Harry offering him the slightest of nods as Professor Black and Flitwick began waving their wands at the platform in the middle, expanding it. Soon a full-length regulation dueling platform was in place and Elaina approached her side walking straight up the steps with her wand now casually at her side, her blue and green eyes practically glowing with anticipation.
Rabastan for his part stomped past his friends who offered him words of encouragement as he stormed onto the dueling platform with his wand sparking dangerously in his hand. Professor Flitwick raised wards around the platform and called out, “No lethal magic aimed in vital places. Violation of these rules will lead to expulsion. Do I make myself clear?”
Elaina immediately nodded in understanding while Rabastan merely grunted. Flitwick nodded in satisfaction as he called out, “Wands at the ready.”
Rabastan raised his wand, while Elaina did not move from her relaxed position. Flitwick glanced at her questioningly, but shook his head as he began the countdown. At two Elaina flicked her wand forward with a cutting curse that Rabastan barely shielded, but before he could return fire Flitwick conjured a massive shield in the middle, “Foul! Ten points from Slytherin. Miss Essex, I expect better sportsmanship from you.”
The girl for her part looked completely unapologetic while merely offering a nod of her head in acceptance. Frank, who was still standing beside Harry, shook his head whispering quietly, “Why risk the disqualification? Any other pair or situation and Flitwick would’ve benched them.”
“The professors want this settled as badly as we do.” Harry explained, “We discussed some tactics to get in his head. We have goals to accomplish beyond dismantling him.”
Frank glanced over at Harry as if he was trying to read his expression, but merely accepted the explanation, “She could’ve hurt him.”
“He did hurt her. With illegal magic. He doesn’t get my sympathies, and doesn’t deserve yours either.” Harry said with an edge in his voice.
Frank said nothing, but observed the countdown as it was conducted again. Rabastan looked red in the face furious, and the Gryffindor prefect wondered what would follow.
When the countdown hit one Elaina slapped away a curse and launched a blast of fire so hot the wards became visible. Rabastan for his part conjured a gust of wind so powerful the fire stopped in its tracks while he then attempted to fire a curse in return, but Elaina was moving forward with clear intention. Another cutting curse nearly severed the boy's arm off, while a duo of low-powered blasting curses shattered the shield he attempted to summon. For the third time Elaina cast diffindo on him, but this time it made contact with his left arm causing a gash in the uniform and blood to be drawn. Professor Flitwick immediately called for a stop, “Mr. Lestrange would you like to continue? First blood goes to Miss Essex.”
Rabastan shouted back through gritted teeth, “Lucky shot. Let’s go again.”
Elaina looked unphased by his rage, while Frank whistled quietly, “He’s lucky she didn’t go for anything vital.”
“Oh, but she did.” Harry said ominously with a slight smile crossing his face for the first time.
Frank looked confused by his words, and watched as the two returned to their starting positions. Harry glanced at the opposite platform and saw James and the Marauders watching with grim fascination as the fight began once more. Elaina had the new Lestrange heir outmatched by a landslide and as the duel went on that became apparent. She began slipping spells into his defense, but only enough to inflict minor pain, and not enough to knock him out of the fight.
James met Harry’s eyes and he shook his head, seemingly disturbed by what was happening before him, but in response the time-traveler merely raised a single finger indicating he should wait for one more minute.
Rabastan for his part just seemed to become angrier, sloppier, and desperation was clearly taking hold as he fought to stay up. There was little doubt in any onlooker's mind who the better duelist was, and the margin of skill was becoming more and more significant as the damage was done.
Lily for her part whispered Elaina’s name quietly, looking disturbed by the effort her friend was putting into harming the Lestrange heir. Harry however patted her arm gently, “She is in control. Don’t worry. She knows what she is doing.”
The three Gryffindors all looked very skeptical of this, while Harry could see Pandora and Andromeda becoming restless across the hall. When Lestrange swayed on his feet after Elaina hit him with a stinging hex straight to the face Harry raised his hands and clapped twice drawing the attention of most of the hall. In that time Elaina didn’t hesitate to reach her hand out and yell in exertion as she yanked Rabastan forward with wandless magic, and blasted him with the reducto curse sending him spiraling backward. It was precisely the same move Harry had done to Yaxley in their first Defense Against the Dark Arts class, something that was not missed by any of the seventh years present.
In a quick move before Flitwick could call the match she cast the accio spell, but instead of the wand coming to her hand a piece of Rabastan’s uniform flew into her grasp making her gasp in faux embarrassment, “Oh no I missed his wand.”
Flitwick immediately called the match and stared at the piece of uniform in her grasp suspiciously before moving to check on the unconscious student. Professor Black was already crouched over the boy with a disturbed look on his face. Harry for his part abandoned his friends and climbed onto the platform motioning for her to follow him. The whole plan had gone perfectly. Now to see the fruits of their labors Harry thought morbidly.
As they approached the down student the two professors were now standing over the still unconscious boy each sharing an unsettled look on their face. When the duo approached Professor Black looked at them with suspicion on his face, “What is this?”
“What is what professor?” Harry asked innocently.
Elaina faked puzzlement, but it was clear neither professor was buying her innocent act. Flitwick crouched down to the boy waving his wand and casting basic medical healing charms before reviving him. When Rabastan opened his eyes he groaned and blinked out the light as he attempted to sit up. Harry and Elaina stayed back but both of their eyes went to the arm that had helped prop the boy up.
Without the sleeve to his robes, a symbol was prominently displayed on his arm, and it was clear he was unaware of it thus far. Professor Black broke the momentary silence, “Mr. Lestrange, are you alright?”
The boy shook his head as he attempted to stand up, “I’m fine.”
As he attempted to get to his feet he wobbled, and Flitwick barked out, “Mulciber, Yaxley, take your friend to the hospital wing.”
Mulciber and Yaxley were staring at their friend looking paler than usual as they surged forward to grab him. As Mulciber slipped an arm under his friend it was clear he was trying to cover his left arm. Before the trio could depart Flitwick called out, “Mr. Lestrange. I find that tattoo on your arm to be in extremely poor taste. The headmaster will be notified.”
Rabastan seemed confused for a moment, before the blood seemed to drain from his face. While before he was red with sweat and pain, now he was ashy white in disbelief as he realized what had been exposed before the entirety of the Great Hall.
Harry for his part merely stepped before the trio blocking their exit. Flitwick and Black both looked at him with some alarm as if they expected him to attack them but instead, he said, “It seems my pet mudblood just wiped the floor with you Lestrange. You should know that the symbol on your arm makes you my enemy.”
With that he stepped towards the three, so close he was nearly nose to nose with Rabastan who could barely stand on his own feet. At his words, mutterings began to go up across the hall and he took that moment to whisper, “I’ll kill you if I ever catch you in those robes.”
With that, Harry whirled around and walked back towards Elaina who followed him back to the Gryffindors without question as Mulciber and Yaxley carried their friend away as fast as they could.
Frank had an angry expression on his face, while Lily and Alice both looked pensive, “You knew he had that tattoo? How? Why did it matter? We already knew he was a bigot.”
Alice nodded, “Frank is right. Other than pumbling him in a public setting what good did that do?”
“More than you know.” Harry admitted, “That was no ordinary tattoo. I will explain more later. What just happened here is just much more significant than you all realize.”
Turning to Elaina he offered his friend a smile, “You did beautifully. Thank you for exposing him.”
It was true Harry had not explained to Elaina completely why she needed to reveal the boy's tattoo, but he promised he would be behind the protection of Potter Manor, which he suspected the topic would be broached as soon as they arrived. The girl with green and blue eyes merely nodded her head accepting his gratitude before saying, “I hold you to your promise.”
Nodding in acceptance Harry offered the group a smile, “Well now that the drama is over, Frank, what do you say? Duel with me?”
Frank glanced around the hall, noticing many eyes were on the group before sighing, “I have so many questions.”
“They will be answered in time, I promise. I trust you. It’s just not time yet.” Harry explained carefully.
The young man ran a hand through his hair while Alice put a hand on his back and offered him a nod, “Go on Frank. I know you have wanted a chance to duel with Harry. Don’t let what just happened sour the moment. Harry will tell us what he knows in his own time.”
Harry offered Alice a grateful look at her words. Her kindness and trusting nature reminded him so much of Neville it nearly hurt. Frank's face shifted to a mischievous grin that would not have been out of place on the Marauders when he said, “You’re right, Ali. Come on Potter. I need to see what you have to show for with all that training you do.”
Grinning at the young man Harry began making his way towards a nearby platform. Flitwick and Black had dispelled the large one in the center, and seemed to be observing students dueling around the room, but the two exchanged quiet whispers and kept glancing back towards Harry throughout their conversation.
The duel with Frank had been interesting. The boy lacked nothing in his dueling abilities. It had been said that Kingsley was the best duelist in their year before Harry arrived, but other than Elaina, Harry thought Frank was much better. Great speed, great power, and decent tactics made him a tough opponent for anyone. Admittedly Harry thought he could have pieced the boy apart in a full field of combat with all the options in the world, but on this platform he made Harry work for his victory. They attracted many onlookers and supporters in favor of Frank who had been very popular in three of the four houses.
The longer the duel waged on though Harry realized the young man was falling into patterns of spell casting. It was becoming clearer to Harry by the minute that Frank was not used to dueling for extended periods of time. Desperation was making him predictable. With a swirl of speed, Harry chained a dozen spells together making Frank push himself to exhaustion before Harry whipped a disarming spell out so fast Frank had no chance of blocking it. When the duel finished the Gryffindor prefect dropped to a knee from the exertion as Harry walked over inspecting the familiar wand.
The wand sent a jolt through Harry as he observed it. This was the wand Neville had carried through their first five years at school. A wand that had caused his friend so much trouble. When Neville had received his new wand he came back a new man, confident, a leader, exactly what Harry needed him to be. The previous wand was almost completely incompatible with him, but memories of the man he became flashed before his eyes as Harry offered Frank a hand, “You are even better than I hoped for.”
Frank grunted taking the hand with a smile, “You are not as good as I expected.”
The comment was made in jest which made Harry chuckle, “Let’s try this again in an open field and see if I can change your mind.”
This made Frank laugh as he retrieved the wand from his friend, “What did you think?”
“You need stamina.” Harry said seriously, “Chain more spells together if you need to, but the longer our duel went you became more predictable. Relying on your best spells because you feared your magic would fail you. It was instinctual, and you may not have even realized it, but I bet you cast bombarda at me over twenty times.”
Frank colored slightly as he put his hands on his hips and leaned back inhaling deeply, “Twenty times you say? I do favor the spell, but that is-”
“Easy to block once I figured out your tells.” Harry answered with a grin.
“How would I have blocked that last spell?” Frank asked with interest.
“Not being there would’ve been the best move.” Elaina said approaching the pair with a smile, “Apparition or dodging would’ve been your only hope. He catches me off guard all the time with that move. Glad to see him kicking someone else’s arse for a change.”
Frank was immediately assaulted by Alice with a hug and a large smile, “You did so well, Frankie!”
Harry coughed and Elaina grinned while Frank turned red at her words, “Laugh it up, Potter.”
“It’s okay, Frankie, I don’t judge.” Harry teased.
Alice huffed at the two who were now fighting back laughter, “They are just jealous that they are still tripping over each other. Don’t think we will hold back the first time Elaina calls you some ridiculous pet name, Harry!”
Harry immediately turned scarlet, while Elaina just smirked at the Gryffindor, “Don’t worry Ali, I will make sure those names are only said in private.”
With that, she leaned up and kissed Harry on the jaw before turning and walking towards Lily who seemed to be searching for her next opponent. Harry for his part was having a hard time picking up his jaw, and whatever Frank said he didn’t hear, but he felt the pat on the shoulder. When he turned and asked, “What?”
Alice burst into laughter, “He’s got it as bad as James. I get it Harry, those eyes on Elaina are dead sexy.”
Frank shook his head smiling, “Should I be worried about how enamored you are by Elaina’s eyes?”
“You know I only have eyes for you Longbottom. Not to worry.” Alice said cheekily kissing the boy on the cheek.
Harry groaned, trying to forget his temporary embarrassment, “Get a room you two.”
Before either could jest at him Professor Black approached the group, “Potter, a word.”
“My savior.” Harry grumbled as he turned away from the couple and followed his professor who motioned him to follow with a jerk of his hand.
The pair approached Professor Flitwick who was still looking quite disturbed and when they came within a few feet the little charms professor waved his wand erecting a privacy ward. Professor Black then turned to face Harry and for the first time in a while he felt slightly intimidated under the stares of two wizards he had come to respect, “We would like an explanation of what occurred this evening.”
Playing innocent would be an insult to the Professor's intelligence, Harry thought first. It was very obviously intentional what occurred this evening. If it hadn’t been throughout the duel the gig was definitely up when Harry clapped his hands.
At Harry’s hesitation, Flitwick spoke, “You are not in trouble Mr. Potter. I think it was quite clear however that Miss Essex had the intention of removing Mr. Lestrange’s sleeve from the beginning. What we want to know is why. The Lestrange family is obviously apathetic to what is happening in the Muggle world, and may even take part in it. You gained nothing we can see by revealing this tattoo to the school.”
“Tattoo professor? I didn’t see a tattoo.” Harry said with a very serious expression and tone.
Flitwick seemed puzzled by his answer while Professor Black seemed irritated, “Potter there is no need to play coy. We all saw the symbol tattooed onto his skin.”
Harry said nothing and the head of Ravenclaw House stared his student down before shaking his head in disbelief, “It wasn’t a tattoo was it?”
Black seemed alarmed by Flitwick’s words while Harry nodded gravely, “A magical brand would be more accurate. I did not know for sure he had it, but I suspected it. I assure you the mark means much more than being apathetic or even sympathetic to what is happening outside these castle walls.”
“It’s just a calling card.” Black dismissed, “All cowards have one. Look at what Grindelwald used to leave behind at the scene of all his crimes.”
Harry said nothing to this, but Professor Flitwick continued to look at Harry carefully, “Are my students in danger, Mr. Potter?”
“Any student bearing that mark is dangerous, Professor. I can’t tell you how I know, but I assure you it is the truth.” Harry said evenly hoping the man he respected in his time would understand.
“I believe you.” The man admitted, surprising Harry and Professor Black, “I will be on the lookout for more who bear this mark. Until then you should rejoin your friends, and have a safe holiday.”
With that, the Professor dispelled his ward, and wasted no time in walking towards a duel that seemed to be getting out of hand between a fifth-year Gryffindor and Slytherin. Professor Black for his part kept his eyes on Harry, “I’d like for us to have another match during the holidays. Perhaps between now and then, you will think about more prevalent information I should be made aware of.”
Harry offered a nod of acceptance as the Professor walked away from him. The whispers and eyes on him were much fewer than when he had arrived, but many were still on Elaina as she dueled with Lily. This duel seemed much more relaxed than the last Elaina had taken part in and both witches had grins on their faces as they danced around each other’s magic gracefully.
Taking a deep breath Harry admired the two witches who fought for the others' respect and hoped that all his friends would return from the holiday season safely.
.o.
Rabastan groaned as he took down the final potion that Madam Pomfrey had stuffed into his hands. It was clear the woman had no love for the Lestrange heir and disappeared into her office as soon as her duty had been completed. Mulciber and Yaxley were speaking in hushed whispers in the corner, but when the hospital matron departed they approached their downed friend's bed.
“Potter and his bitch knew.” Yaxley said coldly, “They knew about the mark, and they knew you had it.”
Mucliber shook his head looking nervously towards the doors as if he expected Harry to suddenly appear, “How could he have known? Only the Dark Lord's closest followers have been given or made aware of the mark.”
“Maybe he saw it when he killed Rudolphus.” Yaxley said logically, making Rabastan growl.
“It doesn’t matter. He said we were enemies, but we were all already enemies. He took so much from our families.” Rabastan said angrily.
“We are no match for him.” Mucliber said quietly, “You saw what he did to your brother who was being trained by the Dark Lord personally. Even with the potions he couldn’t beat Potter. Our Lord needs to be made aware of what happened tonight.”
“No!” Rabastan snapped, “The Dark Lord has seen enough failures from my family. My father would have me cast out for revealing the mark to the professors like that. I will get back at Essex and Potter, I just need the resources and a friend's help. I have been working on a plan. Just trust me.”
Mulciber and Yaxley both exchanged nervous glances, but ultimately nodded in agreement without further word. Rabastan for his part crossed his hands across his chest as he leaned back into his bed. He would get the two blood traitors if it was the last thing he ever did.
