Uncle Fanu promised to get back to the breaks in September, and he's not one to eat his words, so here we go!
This is a very unknown break, but hey now you know it!
"Paa Break" by Didier's Sound Spectrum.
Great for DNB and this'd work well in hip hop (hey been there done that <-link)

The break (trimmed) … do get the album! …and its .asd file if you want it

🗣I hope everyone's well!
• I've just had a 10-day staycation finishing mixing+mastering my 10-track album. Comes out around March in 2025 on Straight Up Breakbeat (vinyl takes time; hence the wait).
• Also somewhat finished a weird house music type EP which will be called HAUS EP Vol. 3 and I'll prob release that late 2024 to the disgust of many ppl only expecting DNB from me.
• Also about to send to the distribution a 10-song DNB compilation, "Breakbeat Brigade", on my Lightless label, coming out Oct 4.
Returning to my usual client work tomorrow, and got 18 clients in the queue, so don't you worry if the next video/post ain't happening super soon: it's this "positive problem" of being super booked. I won't lie, gotta tackle some 🗻 of work. That's my day job. But I'll do a new BBOTM soon and there's a lot of stuff lined up. Wanted to do this for ya'll before burying my head in the workpile.
❗️I recently broke the all-time high number of actually paying members.
❤️ I appreciate you all and your support. The best thing you can do to help me grow is tell your friends about my Patreon. The better it goes, the more amped I always am to make more content!

It took me a while to learn this one, because there was a period (ca. 2000-2010) when I was almost exclusively working with hardware samplers that weren’t that precise in terms of seeing the sample start point. So I was often layering drums but felt baffled as to why I was losing power.
These days layering drums is easier as I pay attention to this one.
Also when layering drumbreaks, pay attention to this!
TIP!
Sometimes when layering drumbreaks, it may make sense to round the transients of one of them, as it may allow the main drumloop to stay on top better, as there's no transient wars going on (this does happen, and sometimes layering drumloops gets messy for this very reason).
🎚️ Phew, this was a mix month for sure.
Let’s get back to the breaks stuff in September!🥁
Got a fat Finnish break lined up for ya!
🎚️⛔️Honorable mix-ain’t-working mentions 👇
BUSY MIX
Sometimes your song may just have too many elements. In a nutshell, the more elements your song has, the less defined its elements will feel.
You cannot have 20 sounds playing at the same time and have them all large and defined.
My own music is often quite busy, so this has been a great lesson in mixing.
TOO MUCH REVERB
Especially in a busy song^, you shouldn’t have a lot of reverb on many elements.
In busy songs, the reverb cannot be heard that well, but it hurts the definition of sounds.
Things get “cloudy”. So do consider going fairly dry if your song is really busy.
It’s easier to savor reverbs in more minimal mixes.
This will always remind me of a song I mixed that 90+ stems (lesson learned…prob never again accepting that many stems).
The client’s reference songs were all minimal, and the vocal had a beautiful reverb on it.
I was being told to add more and more reverb and make it sound like in the ref, but I was saying, we already have so much reverb in the vocal but you can’t hear it in the same way as in the ref because it’s fighting with so many other elements.
The producer finally started muting some elements, and it helped with hearing at least some of the reverb.
MASTER EQ (or other tools) TO “FIX” THINGS 🎛
This often happens with my own music, but I’m aware of it.
As I’m working on the song, it’s more important to me first to make the song work, before making the mix/master work.
But when working, I still compare a bit to stay on track sound-wise.
I often keep pushing the master EQ to give me the mids and brightness that I want.
Then, once I’m done, I usually take a proper earbreak (weeks usually) before getting to actually mixing/mastering it.
The first thing I always hear how I’ve been trying to “fix” the mix with a master EQ that may look slightly wild (big boosts in mids / highs).
This often sounds 85% there as the mix levels are usually fine, but it’s not precise enough.
Most of the time when I disable the master EQ, I realize bass is now too loud and mid and highs aren’t enough.
So instead of trying to fix the sound with the master EQ, I just disable it and go back to the mix and make it bang 95% with the mix alone. Then rest of the finetuning is on the master EQ.
This is really good practice: don’t rely on master EQ – or ANY master tool to fix the mix.
What I also hear happen is producers mixing into a compressor to fix the dynamics.
I may get a self-mastered version, and a nothing-on-the master version. A lot of times I hear I can make it better with mastering, and on the nothing-on-the master version, the levels are off. This is because some aren't that great with mixing levels, but they rely on a master compressor to "fix" the levels, and while it kinda helps with that, the sound isn't that dynamic, because the compressor is clamping down on the sounds that would otherwise feel too loud.
…phew so that's it!
Anything to add, anyone?

Topic #1 I nag to clients about, hands down. Poor mono.
Hell, even a lot of great producers don't check their mono, and then it's my job nag about it. I know, I know, I've been complaining about this a lot, but even some of the songs I get for feedback via Patreon still suffer from this.
Won't lie, I just got a fairly big league song as a reference for a mix where the brightness and hihats are barely there in mono, while they're really bright and present in stereo / on the side signal. How come neither the producer or the engineer hasn't checked it out? SMH.
Let's just care about mono a bit more, ok? It's so easy for you to check.

A lot of people do this one, especially some house producers.
Learn to hear when it's too much...in some chunky, organic styles this isn't really needed. Nothing like hearing some jungle for example where transients are way overcooked :-/
To some this may be very obvious, but you'd be surprised to how many it's not. Some tools are just overused these days, just like clippers, highpass filters…the music is suffering from overprocessing.
BTW we gotta get Breakbeat Of The Month going soon – I have a dope break I've used that prob no-one else has, so it's time to unleash that beast into the world!

Some of the somewhat most challenging premasters or initial mixes I always get from producers that are not doing any referencing. I still find it really important.
How do you know how your song does against other similar songs if you never try to find out?
This video shows you how I do it, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone!

Some people are lazy (I'm lazy too, with some things, like cooking).
They'd like to paint (mix) by numbers and adjust their mixer levels for elements based on what someone is telling them. This may not work out.
Here's my best explanation, with audio, why it may not be "the bomb".
Reason 6 will be one of the best mix self-help tips I can give you, and I do mean it.

Analyzing DAW projects every now and then (instead of just hearing a .wav file), I'd say this can be fairly common especially with less experienced producers. Less is often more.
Reason 5 (next episode, soon) will address a topic that I'm asked about very often and which I'm trying to steer producer away from. Just wait! Will get busy checking some mixer levels 🎚👌🏻
Also, I'll want to create few fresh drumloops for you guys...been a while. Will put a few thru my SP-1200 for added flavor. So let's put that on the to-do list!

Mix nugget 3/9 here!
Should be obvious, but hearing a lot of music out there today (also hearing some of the premasters and stems I get), this one is not obvious.
So trying to raise some awareness around this one.
Instead of slapping a tool there…consider a more manual approach.
Mix nugget 4/9 dropping soon, folks!

(at least) 9 videos will drop before August is over.

I already this one as UAD Native and their Spark version, and I happened to see I have a license for this on my Loopcloud account. I'm not 100% sure how long it'll stay – I remember seeing the offer say Aug 4 is the last day for the offer they throw it in for.
So, let's say, if Aug 3 it's still valid, let's do a giveaway then (this Sat).
You only have to have a paid subscription to my Patreon (any tier), and leave a comment if you'd like to have the plugin.
I'll do a draw on Sat, Aug 3, and leave comment on your comment on this if you happen to win and then DM you the code for DLing the plugin from Plugin Boutique site.
BTW if you do win, be ready to snag it IMMEDIATELY in case the code expires! Also, I cannot guarantee it'll be valid for long.
Also, this is not an ad or an official endorsement for the plugin or Loopcloud, as I've paid for my plugin and LoopCloud, but I use the low freq Pultec a LOT on kicks on its 60 settings, and it's great for that. Sometimes I use the 100 setting to thicken up vocals, instruments etc. It rules. One of the plugins I would not give away.

I'm getting busy with an explosive one! "Soul Drums" by Bernard Purdie.
Man, Purdie is tight and funky, and he got soooo many more breaks, I prob gotta cover some more in a later BBOTM episode.
This one has not been used that much in any genre, probably because 1) it does take some work and 2) it has a very very particular, aggressive, explosive tone.
I'm mentioning on the video what I think may be the first song using it, and I mention a song of mine, and I get busy with the break, and I'm giving you the original song as a download + a version that I've edited for your convenience + you get the project I created and which I rock with on the video.
If you happened to use the project + the drum pattern I created in your song, I'll ask no monetary compensation, but I'd love to be credited to some extent :)
(There's one case on my career where I put a ton of work on a certain break that takes so much effort, and I gave the break to a producer and it ended up on a very decent label, and I didn't even get a mention while all the processing and most of the arrangement of the break in that song was done by me and it took some serious effort…grrrr!)
PS: Make sure to check the other BBOTM episodes too (<- link).
I would LOVE to hear people use it more though! Can you put some work in and make it work?

I recently posted an IG clip about the loudest stem master I've done for a client this year. It raised many comments and I got many DMs from some of you asking me to cover that project.
So that's what I'm doing. I'm also taking a look at a recent Subfocus song.
In this context, I'm discussing the production as well as mastering (mostly limiting/clipping) side of things.
I want to emphasize: 1) You do NOT have to go this loud and 2) I am NOT a loudness advocate.
But my audio engineering job is largely a customer service job, so if someone wants to go really loud, I'll do my best trying to make it happen. Just like a chef preparing an extra spicy meal if requested.
The song in question is Teotek - Incessant Fluorescent (Gade System Remix) and it's coming out later this year.
Will soon get back to Breakbeat Of The Month and more dynamic things! 👌🏻😋🥁

I've been getting Qs about gain staging again, so let's have a refresher to keep our dynamics decent. After all, gain staging in a modern DAW is fairly simple and there's only a few rules to follow.
Old video (good lord I've lost weight since thanks to a complete 180 life change) above to show it all, but main points are below.
🎚️IN A NUTSHELL 🎚️
TRACKS: In terms of distortion or avoiding it, one can have them as loud as one wants, as one cannot distort the tracks per se due to the mega high headroom for the tracks (thanks to floating point audio engine) even if they hit the red a lot. Red is never good practice, but just saying.
PLUGINS: Level going into plugins is a different matter. Not all plugins mind the level, but for example analog-emulated and input-sensitive plugins will distort if you go into them loud. For example many saturation or distortion plugins distort it at input stage. So watch the input level and use moderate input levels for plugins, always.
MASTER: Don't run it red.
Any Qs? Holla!
Let's talk about really loud masters soon and check out a mega loud project, and let's get back to Breakbeat of the month soon as well!

I got waaaaay more questions I can handle in one sitting, but here’s part 1.
Trying to keep these all bite-sized enough to be digestible.
Want to see more? Leave a comment. Or leave a further question!
If this feels good, I will most definitely make more of these.
This series will be free for everybody and will post on all my socials, but exclusive Patreon content will continue.

Phew, just kicked off a 2-week vacation (time off of my main grind, i.e., mixing and mastering music).
I thought, maybe a "ask me anything" type of thing could work: you could send some questions (add them to this post) and I'd do a public video (or two if there's lots of Qs) where I'd reply to some of them (might be more convenient than typing real long).
Ask me anything relating to music, audio engineering, plugins, music production, audio/freelancer biz etc.
Let's do this!

Well it's definitely been a bass month, hasn't it! And that's what we'll finish June with, too: bass.
As an engineer, it’s my job to make sure that many things are well in place.
One of those is sub bass. I’ve been dealing with sub bass music for 30+ years and can claim expertise there as an engineer and a producer. If the lows aren't hitting in bass music, it ain't working. Applies to all forms of modern house, DNB, etc.
I have covered this recently in terms of EQing, but there are times when EQing won’t go far enough and you have to pull out something a little more special.
I often communicate this and have the producer fix it, but if that cannot be done, it’s good to have tools like this in the toolbox!
On this video, I’m using both a third-party plugin called Lowender (I mostly use it for bass) and also Ableton Corpus (which can be great for kick lows).
If you want to try the Corpus preset yourself, here's the one I ended up using – download preset (click me!) .
Keep it subby!

Mixing/mastering is largely a customer service job.
Do your best early on to find out what it is the client wants.
Ask for reference songs (it’s ok to ask for files, because referencing against multiple stream sources can be a pain).
Feel free to say it if you think the refs aren’t fitting (to an extent that’s your job; you’ll grow into it).
There are times when it’s your job to find out what the clients want if they don’t fully know what it is.
Make sure to convey from the get-go that some discussion is expected…because everyone gets some jobs rejected sometimes, and there’s nothing more annoying than doing your best and then only hearing “Well it’s not what I’m looking for, bye”.
And sometimes what they want may be a 2 dB tweak away or a kick that is a bit less muscular…you just have to have them say it.
There’s a small amount of people who are reluctant to communicate and they assume you to read their mind, but audio engineering isn’t a one-way street most of the time. Promote healthy discussion and make clients feel welcome about asking for changes.
Be responsive. I can assure you this will give your client some confidence that they are being heard.
There are times when the song, or something in it, sounds bad to you (e.g., vocals too bright or not enough bass) in the end after some discussions and client wishes for tweaks, but don’t put your ego on the way: the end goal is not to make it 100% fitting for you, it’s to make it 100% fitting for the client.
Feel free to suggest changes, but don’t be too adamant about them. It’s not your song.
Patience gets tested sometimes. This line of work requires that. After all, it’s customer service.
Don’t send out a song if you are unsure about it; instead, ask for a bit more time to feel as good about it as possible.
Taking a bit longer and providing a good-sounding song is often more important that doing it fast.
(Pet peeve as a busy engineer: someone orders a job and wants it soon and then takes a week to respond for the first time after I’ve sent the first version)
Btw before you ask: that 🧢 is available from my site (also in olive)
Any Qs? 🗣️

It's time to talk about side signal mindfulness.
In my daily work, I hear a lot of audio where everything has been made really wide. It is effortless to make things wide today, but making sure the side signal isn't too much is another matter.
In this video, I'm going through some of my main thinking and plugins I use for cleaning up the side signal, starting with transients, then moving on to EQing.
Let's keep the side signal smooth!
Any Qs, holla!

Get your sub bass right!
In this 15-min video tutorial, I will show you how I correct the bass of a song I’m stem mastering.
I’m also showing why its bass is lacking and how to fix it.
📝 BTW I have tackled this earlier in text format HERE and HERE and HERE 📝
I will show you easy-to-follow numerical figures which you can follow when working on your song to get the sub of your song right in terms of level AND frequencies – even if your speakers aren’t great for producing subs.
I will also say a few words about using my favorite analyzer and how to set its slope and why it matters.
LATER EDIT:
Above you're seeing the settings on my SPAN that I've always used to get a similar slope.
You get to access these by hitting the wheel on top right next to where it says DEFAULT.
This should help you get your sub bass in your songs to the ballpark.
BTW!
There is also a new Mixing Collection (playlist) in the works (you can click on that already and check it out!) I will make a song and dance about it once it's all sorted…there's almost 50 posts in that collection now!

There, you find the samples you can download if you are subscribed to any tier but the lowest one. You will find kicks, snares, basses, and song stems downloads.
Enjoy! You can freely use those in your productions.
🗣 ⁉️ If you have anything to ask relating to the samples or downloads, just add a comment to this post and I will reply!
📒 NOTE 1:
Currently there are more to download from my Patreon that just samples (videos, Ableton stuff, bass presets etc).
You can browse them all (including samples too, for now) under DOWNLOADS tag (<- click).
I will probably clean things up and create another collection called Downloads soon that does not include samples but it will include everything else.
Bare with me: got a lot on my desk, always, so this cleaning up does take some time, but I will do it :)
📒 NOTE 2:
Included among the Samples collection posts, there are the two large drumloop sample packs I have created, but they are not available as a free download UNLESS you are a producer tier member, because they are priced way higher than the lowest two tiers (if you are on producer tier and want them, just DM me).
Also, those can be bought directly on my Patreon store OR you can buy them from my Bandcamp or directly from me by paying with Paypal (feel free to hit me up for a nice price!)
PREVIEW THE PACKS:

Linear drumming means a style of drumming where only one drumsound can play at a time.
Prob the most famous electronic music track doing linear drumming? "Flim" by Aphex Twin (link).
A famous funk drum loop with linear drumming: Shack Up by Banbarra (link).
Linear drumming is great in tunes that otherwise are very busy or very melodic: keeps your drums more sparse! A lot of tracker or mono sampler stuff is linear drums.
So you don't necessarily do shakers, constant non-stop hihat line etc.
Upside? It liberates you from having to do busy drum sections.
The downside? Well, depending on style, it may not work, as you may want those shakers, fat constant hihats layered with kicks and snares etc (e.g. in a lot DNB).
It aims at a more minimal approach instead of very busy (sometimes in funk or some IDM like Aphex Twin).

BONUS: Dennis DeSantis writes about it a bit on the free Ableton PDF book on page 144.
Try it out!

It's drums processing time!
Ever since Chopping Science episode 2 I've meaning to get back to processing the Soul Pride break a bit further and touch it a bit just because it's so great.
So here, I'm finally layering some hits to go with the good old Soul Pride break (one of my faves, and made me start the breaks series) and I'm processing it a bit.
It's crazy how you can take a classic break pretty easily to a next level with a bit of help…hope you can get some ideas!
I promised one of you to do this a long time ago too – so sorry it's taken so long! – and I'm a man of my word, always.
BTW I've edited the Collection that was earlier known as Breakbeat Of The Month to be "Breakbeats Stuff" (<link: check it out!) and there's now a LOT of stuff under it!
So check out that collection if you wanna peep my drums stuff.
Note that it sorts content from newest to oldest.
I still need to create more collections (e.g., Ableton stuff, sample downloads).
🌞 Will soon write an update about things ☀️

So I (with some help) have discovered a whole new break, which, I am pretty sure, hasn't really been used by the breakbeat community much.
What's the song and who helped me? Where did I use it before? Well, watch the video and find out! Grab the break as well as Ableton and Bitwig projects before.
Hope you enjoy!
(My audio is a bit off sync here and there; after a whole of configuring things and testing stuff, I'm still having sync issues when I use my iPhone as camera, which gives me nice quality but fecks up audio sync, so I have to fix things manually, which is major pain and time hog...hence in some parts you may see it's slightly off, but this shouldn't affect learning. May have to go back to using my iMac camera, which ain't the greatest, but doesn't create issues)
BTW if you like the content, it'd be super nice if you let ppl know of my Patreon – it would help it to grow! I would love more new paying members and also interaction (what I miss from my Youtube days is the interaction :-)

My Ableton Live Basics video course (three parts) is finally FREE and available to ya'll – because I’m nice like that ;-)
The Basics course (link!) has three videos and is 4.5 hours in total, so there's a lot to watch and learn
⚠️Paying members, don’t worry, I most definitely ain’t going all free: my only main focus is creating exclusive content❗️
(BTW where are all you from? If you’re seeing this, leave a comment, I wanna know!)
Someone once said that you should give something back to your community when you are doing well, and I agree.
It's going well for me. I admit these videos sold pretty dang well when I released them many years ago (when Live 10 was new, so it's been a few years). It looks like the sales of the video have run their course now, and time has come to release them to the general public instead of sitting on them.
This program, originally only available from my webshop, has taught hundreds of people around the world how to enjoy Ableton Live. I have also been teaching this in person and via workshops for years.
Video uses Ableton Live 10, but the very same principles and core features apply to all versions of Ableton Live. I guess it's "dated" as I haven't updated it with Live 11+12 features (obv. main functionality is largely the same). Been thinking of updating that video with 11+12 features, but TBH I always have so much other work on my desk, can never be arsed to even start.
Find relevant timecodes in all video descriptions.
The download link to the demo set I use on the videos (in case you want to use it) is in the description text of Video 1. This very Patreon post probably only links you to video 1/3 but there’s 2/3 and 3/3 up there too (links on the video description text).
I'd absolutely LOVE it if you could share this video on your socials or with your friends who'd like to learn Ableton Live...it's all free, with no catch! Maybe this video can be THE video the whole world can learn from?
I will probably do the same for my Advanced course very soon.
📝 TBH there won't be much free stuff coming after this, aside from the Advanced course, which comes soon, and occasional music promo posts, so most content on Patreon will be and stay exclusive 🔐
Hope everyone’s having a great, sunny spring, wherever you are 🌞
