Modular Castle Contest - Submissions Due August 6th

It’s time for another Community Contest! This time, to celebrate the release of the full Gothic Castle and the Modular Castle system, submissions will be castle themed. We’re looking for more rooms and themes to add to the Modular Castle system to really flesh it out, but of course, feel free to bring any and all of your creative ideas for the contest, we’ve had everything from macros, to full modular systems submitted in the past. The sky's the limit!

Like our other contests, there will be winners in two categories: Best Single Submission and Best Body of Work. YOU, the community, will vote on the winners that you’d like to see included in the Baileywiki family of modules! The two winners will have their work included in the modules, with credit, receive the VIP role on the Baileywiki discord, and receive a one year patreon subscription at the Spline and Grid, tier 3 level.

Note that every submission is a candidate for inclusion in the modules, so even if you do not win the contest, you may have your submissions added if we feel that it fits the scope of the modules and brings value to the community.

SPECIAL FILES: Building Pack (Updated with Castle Walls)

Rules:

  1. Due to licensing restrictions, you can only use Forgotten Adventures, Tom Cartos, AoA, or Krager assets. Anything else will not render because we won't have the artwork.
  2. You must submit assets that can be deployable into the modular world. Not full maps, but rather tactical elements, furnished buildings, or vehicles. Note: This means that they should be ready to export to Foundry as well. Transparent elements that cannot be exported from Dungeondraft easily should be omitted or handled in post processing prior to submission.
  3. Attached are templates and examples for the Modular Castle system for you to use, we highly encourage designing your submissions with these in mind. Check out the template overview video to learn how to navigate these most effectively. It is much more likely your work will be included in the module, and the community benefits from having diverse and interesting buildings. Last contest’s "Body of Work" winner, Abominablerob, did exactly this. With that said, you can do anything you want. Shaftoe, last month’s “Single Submission” winner, designed custom libraries and a bathhouse from scratch that fit in beautifully with the other modular assets.
  4. You can submit as many entries as you like. Each entry is eligible for the "Best Single Submission" award, and the entire set is eligible for "Best Body of Work"

HOW TO SUBMIT:

  • All submissions are due by 11:59 PM US Pacific Time on August 6th, 2021.
  • Submission Files should include the following:
    • Dungeondraft files used
    • Description of submissions
    • Desired “screen name” for the contest poll
    • Showcase images of the submission (jpg only, maximum of 70 DPI)
    • OPTIONAL: Foundry .db files of example prefabs
    • OPTIONAL: YouTube showcase video link
  • DM submissions as a filesharing link (ie: Google Drive) or zipped folder to Zephyr on Discord.
  • By submitting, you are granting Baileywiki a free and perpetual commercial license to your work. You still retain ownership of your work and may distribute elsewhere in the manner of your choosing, however, we must be able to deploy and maintain any prefabs or maps made with your work. If this is an issue, please refrain from submitting.

Conclusion

As always, Baileywiki, Zephyr, and the whole community of artists will be available on Discord to provide design feedback. Previous contest winners have had great success in taking and incorporating feedback from the discord, so we highly encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity!

Once contest submissions are in, we will take a few days to put together a poll for the community to vote on the submissions and will look to have the winners decided and included by the release at the beginning of September 2021.

That is all for the business side of the contest, so let the mapmaking begin! Enjoy the process and we’re looking forward to seeing what you all create!

Best,

Zephyr and Baileywiki

Modular Castle Preview - Coming next week!

Hey Patrons,

Here's a quick preview of the new system coming to you all next week. It's built to work with all of the other modular systems, and designed to take advantage of all the new Foundry 0.8.x goodies, including overhead tiles

There will also be Dungeondraft files and system specs to design your own rooms in any way you want! And you know there will be a design contest for new room contributions.

Finally, this system will support the new Moulinette tile browser and (in a few weeks) prefab browser, so you can quickly find any asset you're looking for.

Looking forward to the launch!

Modular Town Contest - April 2021 - Best Single Submissions

Hello everyone, it’s time to review and vote on the entrants for this month’s community contest! I’ve been blown away by all of the submissions and am excited to see what everyone else thinks as well.

Remember that there are two categories: Best Single Submission (this poll) and Best Body of Work (link to other poll). The two Community Members with the most votes will get a fancy VIP role and 1 year of Tier 3 Patreon, but any worthy entry may  have their content added into the Town or Dungeon Module (whichever is more appropriate) where their name will live in glory forever!

Best of luck to everyone who entered, and I hope that everyone enjoys the great work the community has been putting out.

-Zephyr

Without further ado, the Single Submission Entries:

Abominablerob

First up, we have Abominablerob’s submissions. They’ve put together a whopping 17 different buildings for the Modular Town, but they weren’t done yet and also put together a selection of Overlays for Modular Dungeon. I’m considering the Overlays as a single submission with each building as a separate submission. There’s some highly requested stuff in here that I’m sure will get some folks excited.

Abominablerob - Woodcutter’s Home

Abominablerob’s first submission is the Woodcutter’s home. Perfect for populating your rural towns with a bit of professionalism.

Abominablerob - Granny’s Cottage

What woods are complete without an innocent old Granny’s Cottage? The perfect addition for a grimm woodland adventure.

Abominablerob - Potion/Component Shop

For every player that has a potion making habit, there’s a GM in need of an apothecary. Abominablerob’s got you covered with another option that will fit right in to most settlements. This also includes an accompanying cozy home with a fireplace for the weary pharmacist.

Abominablerob - Cobbler

Your players walk a bit too many miles in their old boots? Have them head over to Abominablerob’s Cobbler for a nice re-soling, or perhaps a new pair. Like the potionshop, this submission also includes a suitable abode for the shoemaker.

Abominablerob - Stables

A heavily requested building lately, Abominablerob comes through with the first stable of Modular Town, complete with a small building for the hands and proprietor.

Abominablerob - Cluttered General Store

When you’re outfitting adventurers for a living, your place is going to get a bit messy. The Cluttered General Store brings this concept to life and then some. A fashionable, but very full establishment.

Abominablerob - Poor Man’s Privy and the Patisserie

Nothing works up an appetite quite like adventuring, well, maybe making maps. Treat your players to some tasting confections from this Patisserie, including a fine dusting of flour. And, as we all know, you can never have too many toilets, so there’s accompanying privy nearby.

Abominablerob - Prospector’s Trade Hall

A wonderful companion piece to the recently released The Town, the Prospector’s Trade Hall is ready for all of your player’s mining and smithing needs

Abominablerob - Meadhall

Just as we can never have too many toilets, you can’t have too many places to get a drink. This smaller, more direct meadhall is excellent for finishing up a neighborhood or small town. There’s even a small storage building for more booze and extra cups. A great location for small-town (or business) espionage!

Abominablerob - Bathhouse

AFter a long day on the road, your heroes need to clean up for that big ball up at the count’s castle. Abominablerob has just the place for them to wash up after a long day of adventuring.

Abominablerob - Warehouse

With all of the shops around town, there’s got to be a place to store goods. The warehouse is a small building to add just an extra little bit of immersion to your merchant districts and towns.

Abominablerob - Homes

A nice collection of homes/apartments to house your NPC’s including some nice kitchen and seating areas.

Abominablerob - Aspiring Bard’s Hovel

For the musician that promises they’ll make it into college one day, there’s the Aspiring Bard’s Hovel.

Abominablerob - Peeping Tom’s Boarding House

A great addition to your inn options is Peeping Tom’s Boarding House. Abominablerob has added some secret compartments to facilitate the proprietor’s… indiscretions. This would make a great location for some interesting spy or whodunnit quests!

Abominablerob - Windmill

Abominablerob’s last building, the Windmill is a great, detailed space for your agricultural settlements. The splendid roof is sure to stick out and draw your players in to an interesting encounter within this varied space.

Abominablerob - Overlays

Abominablerob brings in some great additions to the Overlays system, both for dungeons and for the wilderness. This includes some much requested and much needed statue options for both within and without your deadly sepulchres.

All Statue Variants

Captain Windows

Next up we have Captain Windows. Captain put together a great looking “catacombs” tileset for the Modular Dungeon, including a few large room overlays for an extra suspenseful vibe. Not only did he make custom walls and kit-bashed objects for the tiles, he’s packaged them into a full Dungeondraft pack for the community to use!

Captain Windows - Catacombs Dungeon Tiles and Asset Pack

Asset Pack - Custom Bone Assets

Asset Pack - Modular Cofins & Crypts

Asset Pack - Skeletal Walls and Paths

Dungeon Tiles - Walls

Dungeon Tiles - Stairs down

Dungeon Tiles - Stairs Up

Dungeon Tiles

Dungeon - Large Rooms

Dungeon - Altar Overlay

Dungeon - Altar Overlay 2

Dungeon - Crypt Overlay

Dungeon - Throne Overlay

Given the interlocking nature of these pieces, I’m considering this all a single submission as well as a body of work. Excellent spooky vibe, perfect for a Lich’s domain, or perhaps a dungeon in a hellscape? The overlay rooms are complete with a fantastic altar, bloody throne, and another crypt variant.

j03n1nj4

Our third entrant is j03n1nj4. This entry is a real testament to the creativity and resourcefulness of the community, and a great reason why we don’t limit the contest’s scope too much.

j03n1nj4 - Waterwade Sounds

https://youtu.be/N2oHjNMUv2g

j03n1nj4’s submission isn’t a map at all, but a fantastic collection of sounds and a macro to add water wading sounds to all of your aquatic maps! Ramp up the immersion even more in your stinky sewers or serene pond by letting your players hear their movements throughout the map. Since this isn’t a visual addition, j03n1nj4 was kind enough to provide a YouTube video showcasing this cool tech. (note that j03n1nj4 had collaborated with another community member who added Entry and Exit sounds, but out of respect to them, j03n1nj4 has not included that in their contest entry. If this gets the most votes in the contest, we’ll reach out to both about incorporating the “whole package”)

King Barthur

Next up is King Barthur. King Barthur has been at the digital design game for awhile and has put together some great, high utility buildings for us to consider!

King Barthur - A Humble Shrine

King Barthur’s first submission is a shrine, perfect for a small temple in your city, or a remote temple.

King Barthur - A Modest Accommodation

King Barthur’s next piece is a cozy abode for a rural town or woodland hermit.

King Barthur - The Apothecary’s Shop

You can never have too many apothecaries and alchemy shops! King Barthur brings us his take on a moderate to upscale purveyor of potions.

King Barthur - The Town Watchpost

When your players get out of line, where do all of the guards come from? King Barthur’s Town watchpost, that’s where.

King Barthur - The Village Gaoler

Once the town guards catch the rapscallions, they can haul be hauled off to King Barthur’s Village Gaoler to think about their crimes while the constabulary decides what to do with them.

Rathji/Dork Caracal

Rathji has already contributed a lot of work to the Modular Dungeon project and his submission for the contest is building upon that success! Rathji has a full tileset and pre-built dungeon for us!

Rathji/Dork Caracal - Bonehorn Dwarven Fortress Tileset and Scenes

Some of the Decor Pieces are also animated, check out these short videos or pop into Foundry to see them in action!
https://youtu.be/bKtQIY_eUvo

https://youtu.be/piCt8eHNfRM

Rathji’s presents the Bonehorn Dwarven Fortress: a tileset and 3 level dungeon. The dungeon has some incredible scenes already within the Modular Dungeon... module. If you’re interested in exploring more of this you should load it up and have a look around yourself! You can find the tiles and scenes in the “Baileywiki Dungeon - Rathji” compendiums.

Shaftoe

Shaftoe made heavy use of The Workshop to refine their Bathhouse for some serious reddit clout this past month and refine an upper class Library building too.

Shaftoe - Library

Shaftoe has provided both a pristine and a ruined version of this fantastic library. This is a great addition to wealthier districts in the Modular Town while pulling double duty as a nice ruin for players to visit after a disaster or in some forgotten part of the world.

Shaftoe - Bathhouse

Another great piece for wealthier areas of your settlements, this bathhouse comes complete with its own restaurant as well!

Now, once you're done here, don't forget to vote in the other poll for Best Body of Work!!

Now, once you're done here, don't forget to vote in the other poll for Best Single Entry!!

Modular Town Contest - submissions due April 7

It's time for two more winners! Like last time, the community will be judging based on (1) best single submission, and (2) best body of work. There will be two winners, and each winner will get a 1 year premium patreon subscription.

All submissions will be candidates to be deployed in the Modular Town (or Dungeon!) modules with credit to you, the creator.

RULES:

1. Due to licensing restrictions, you can only use Forgotten Adventures, Tom Cartos, AoA, Krager or White Fox Works assets. Anything else will not render because I won't have the artwork.

2. You must submit assets that can be deployable into the modular world. Not full maps, but rather tactical elements, furnished buildings, or vehicles.

3. I have attached empty building templates to this post (below), and I encourage you to use these for your submissions. It's is much more likely your work will be included in the module, and the community benefits from having diverse and interesting buildings. Last month's "body of work" winner, theGreySentinel, did exactly this. With that said, you can do anything you want. Another winner, Zephyr, submitted an entire modular sewer system.

4. You can submit as many entries as you like. Each entry is eligible for the "Best Single Submission" award, and the entire set is eligible for "Best Body of Work"

HOW TO SUBMIT:

  • You must submit by midnight US Pacific Time on April 7th.
  • DM me on Discord with your Dungeondraft map file(s): Include a descriptive name of your entry and some text if it's needed.
  • By submitting, you are granting me a free and perpetual license to your work. You still own your work and can deploy it elsewhere, but if I end up deploying it, I can't break maps. If you don't like this, don't submit.

As always, I (and other artists in the community) will be available on Discord to provide design feedback as you go, so take advantage!

So let's get after it, and have fun making your maps!

January Contest - Cast your vote! - Best Overall Body of Work

It's time to vote for the contest winners! For our first contest out of the gates, we only had a few submissions, but I am blown away by the quality. This first vote is for the best single entry.

Remember, there are two first-place prizes each for a 1 year patreon Tier 3 subscription: (1) best single entry, and (2) best Body of Work (that's this one). You can vote for the same person twice, but I will give out two prizes, so even the runner up in a category can win.

Also, any of these can make it into the Modular Town system. That's entirely up to me.

And with that, here are the finalists for Best Overall Body of Work:

(in alphabetical order)

TheGreySentinel

TGS followed the contest rules the closest and designed entirely new interiors for the modular town system. This makes it easy to incorporate into the world and could provide more options to the community. Great design eye.

Apothecary and Diviner

Bakery and Home

Herbalist, Home, Chapel and Lab

Inn and Home

Restaurant, Weapon Shop, Bookstore

Theater

Paff

Paff went for a modular angle, offering a church and graveyard that come come together or separately. I'm considering it one submission since they're so well integrated. He also provided a coveted Archive, which is a staple for adventuring parties.

Paff - Church and Graveyard

Paff - Noble House1

Paff - Noble House2

Rathji

Rathji took advantage of the crew in the Workshop channel to develop this nice little jail house, one of the most requested assets for the modular town.

Rathji - Jail

Zephyr

Zephyr took the Modular Town to the next level, literally, by building an entire Modular Sewer system. Here are some screen shots of the final product. He's already designed it to match up to the Town system.

Modular System Latest Release - Modular Castle v2

Release Log

##UPDATE 6/16/21## Major Release

Overview of the release here

Modules in Use (Optional)

Whenever possible, I use the following modules. You'll want to get your hands on them for the full effect:

  • FXMaster: Lots of great weather and special effects for your maps.
  • Multilevel Tokens: I create automatic teleport points to get your players around the map. I also project players from one level so players on another level can see them.
  • Parallaxia: This module lets you animate tiles, like water running by or roads that scroll to simulate movement.
  • Better Roofs: Replaces the old roofs module in Foundry 0.8
  • Levels: Creates the ability to add playable levels above and below the standard Foundry single level
  • Token Attacher: This is required if you want to deploy prefab assets from the Actor Compendium. Things like, carts, ships, buildings and teleporters.
  • Token Magic FX: Special effects on some maps, including drop shadows, flames, and more.
  • Vehicles and Mechanisms: For making deployable assets that actually pick up and carry your tokens!
  • Wall Height: Makes it so you can see over walls if your token is at the proper elevation. Useful for tactical maps and elements and a requirement for Levels module.
  • Compendium Folders: This are used to organize some large compendiums. You don't need it, but it might help you find things.
  • Scene Packer: Optional if you want to automatically download relevant journal entries which can add to functionality of some maps.
  • Quick Encounters: Optional if you are playing dnd5e and want to leverage built-in encounters in some Baileywiki maps (requires Scene Packer to import)

About the Modular Town

The Modular Town (and Wilderness and Dungeon) is a whole system for easily creating situation-based maps for either roleplay or battlemaps, complete with tactical elements, many different store and building types, and even alternative terrains, weather and ambient loops.

Free Version:

The Free Module has just a small example of the modular town, a muddy townsquare and a snowy version of it, with deployable Christmas tree and Granaries. Find it in my free module available in the Foundry directory under "baileywiki" or here https://foundryvtt.com/packages/baileywiki-maps/

Modules in Use: FXMaster for creating lovely clouds rolling by and Roofs module to dynamically get rid of roofs when your players enter a building. Most buildings are blank with a few great exceptions.

Premium Version:

The premium Modular Town includes many building types, both low-class and middle-class (with high class buildings coming soon). There are also a lot of tactical map elements like trees, stairs, garbage cans, street lights, and much more, all pre-lit with foundry walls, lighting and sounds where applicable.

There are also Facades, which are deployable buildings that can be linked to much large maps, like the Keep, the Tavern or the Tower. Just link them with Multilevel Token and your players can teleport directly to those maps.

Sample Maps: While you can easily create your own town maps with the included elements and the "template" scenes in the compendium, you can also use pre-built 'sample' maps that are included in the Scenes compendium.

Special Use of Token Attacher: The modular town system relies heavily on the Token Attacher module. This module allows you to deploy assets from the Actor compendium complete with walls, lights and sounds, which can be rotated and moved altogether. Make your own custom assets or change the configuration of the ones I include in the pack to match your style of play.

Performance Considerations: The larger your map and the more elements you include, the more performance will suffer. Consider making a series of small maps that you link together with Multilevel Token module. Also, modules like FXMaster can be amazing for weather elements, or Token Magic FX for cool tile and token effects, but you can turn them off for immediate performance gains.

Communicate with me anytime at my Discord.

Tips

  1. Don't delete multiple control tokens at once. Do it one at a time or you'll get artifacts.
  2. Hold CTR when rotating assets or use the arrow keys to quickly rotate them
  3. If after placing an asset the image is laying on top of another image, use the Tile tool to move it to the back. it won't hurt anything
  4. There are many ambient sounds and some loops included in the module files. Check em out.
  5. Instead of using the Actor assets, you can deploy images directly from the module files
  6. When you are done setting up your scene, "select all" actors and then right click one of them to make all of the control tokens invisible to your players
  7. Use walls to close off parts of the map to your players

Free Map - The Frigate - all three levels [42X40]

For a full video walkthrough of the Frigate, go here.

To see the Frigate being made, go here.

Frigates are a fighting class, meant for war and escort. They boast ample weaponry across two firing decks and low to the waterline. Frigates can continue attacking when other ships are tossed by the wind. I'm happy to make all three levels of the Frigate available for free here.

Foundry VTT users can get this pre-lit with Foundry lighting, walls, sounds and advanced module functionality by installing or updating my free Foundry module.

TIER 1 PATREONS:

For Patreons at level 1, the Dark Frigate is available, as well as all of the layers in transparent PNG and WEBP so you can place the Frigate in any configuration. Go here for this and more.

All Patreon tiers get access to the rest of my library of high quality maps.

TIER 2 PATREONS:

Tier 2 Patreons get all of my maps pre-lit for Foundry VTT and featuring advanced functionality. They also get access to the DungeonDraft file so they can customize the look, color and furnishing of the Frigate. This map is roughly 5 hours of work, so it makes a great foundation for altering the map without much effort.  See the current Dungeondraft file(s) for the month here.

TIER 3 PATREONS

This tier gets access to my entirely library of Dungeondraft files in the Archive.

INCLUDED IN THE FRIGATE: There are two motifs, "light" and "dark". Mixing both, along with my other ships in the fleet make for a nice variety of naval vessels.

Level 01: Main Deck. Packed with weaponry and plenty of deck space to move around.

Level 02: Gun Deck. More Guns! Featuring a plush Captain's Quarters and Forward Deck.

Level 03: Lower Decks. Crew quarters, the Hold, Mess and the Brig.

This map is also available in free and paid versions in my Foundry-ready map packs, which you can find here:

Baileywiki Map Pack (free) (Anyone)

Baileywiki Map Pack (premium) (Tiers 2 and 3 only)

Free Map - The Tavern [30x25]

Here's my take on the famous Yawning Portal Tavern. This map has two large levels and features a winch and chain system to lower drunken adventures into the depths of the pit. You will also find ample room for socializing or fighting, lots of bedrooms for weary travelers, and a private dining room for plotting and scheming.

TIER 1 PATREONS:

This Tavern is also available in two other motifs:

  • Music Stage with dressing room in the back
  • Fightnig Pit with gambling room in the back

Go here for this and more.

All Patreon tiers get access to the rest of my library of high quality maps.

TIER 2 PATREONS:

Tier 2 Patreons get all of my maps pre-lit for Foundry VTT and featuring advanced functionality. They also get access to the DungeonDraft file for any map released in the current month so they can customize the look, color and furnishing as much as they want.

TIER 3 PATREONS

This tier gets access to my entirely library of Dungeondraft files in the Archive, including this map.

---

Hello Baileywiki brick and mortar and spline and grid subscribers. Thanks to a little encouragement by some of you, and the warm receptivity of the unwashed masses on Youtube, I'm going to start releasing videos to you subscribers before any general release.

Some videos will always be private.

WHAT KIND OF VIDEOS?

My videos will mostly revolve around Dungeondraft tutorials, but also as an exclusive perk to Patreons, I'm also offering to take one of your maps per month and "fix them up" with my special panache.

HOW DO I SUBMIT A MAP TO BAILEYWIKI?

If you have a map that you'd like me to consider, please visit my Discord and put an image of it there in the #general channel or DM me with it.

Remember that it should use the Forgotten Adventures asset packs, and/or Tom Cartos packs. I can't get into custom packs or things I don't have a commercial license to use.

SO WHATCHA GOT?

Without further ado, here's the latest exclusive video release. This is Part 3 of the Tower Tutorial (probably the last installment), which will go onto Youtube next month.

VIDEO RELEASES (NEWEST TO OLDEST):

2/5/21: Dungeondraft Tutorial: The Church - Part 2 of 3. Second floor design.

2/2/21: Dungeondraft Tutorial: The Church - Part 1 of 3. Initial design approach.

12/8/20: Dungeondraft Tutorial: The Frigate - Part 2 of 2, Finishing the ship

11/23/20: Dungeondraft Tutorial: The Frigate - Part 1 of 2. Initial design approach.

11/20:20: Dungeondraft Tutorial: The Tower - Part 3 of 3. Special effects and tricks.
