This month we read The Book That Wouldn't Burn by Mark Lawrence. As always, the only thing I knew about this was it was recommended by a friend and a guy at Waterstones. Sounds good!
Beginning: great, interesting world building, totally unique locations, really held my attention. I wonder where this is going??
Middle: ehhhh... maybe I'd read a chapter and then put it down. It was fine but pretty slow.
Ending: ohhhh so THAT'S what that means! A lot of fixing loose ends and making connections that weren't originally explained. Interesting concept!
Overall I'd say it's a solid 3.5/5! The romance choices felt weird, though, and there was some bits that really pulled me out of it.
Book 2 of this series is getting released soon and apparently there will be a Book 3. Would I continue reading them? Eh, maybe.

For Spooky Month, we'll be reading Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak. I don't know anything about this one other than it won some awards and it's a mystery-thriller! Spooky!

This month for Book Club we read the modern classic A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole (available here if you want to check it out!). From reading the reviews after finishing the book, it seems this one really splits the room: you either enjoy it, or despise it.
I really enjoyed it!
I felt like all of the characters (however minor or unlikeable) were completely fleshed out into unique people - each one of them could have had their own story. I loved how unique the story itself was, how insufferable our main character is and overall I had a great time. I think this will be one I'll be thinking about for awhile.
For September, we're changing gears to what seems to be a fantasy-vibe story with The Book That Wouldn’t Burn by Mark Lawrence. As always, I haven't read the back but this was recommended to me by a few people - let's give it a go!

Unfortunately I have been working on clearing/fixing the copyright claims since then - and have been unsuccessful. Rather than remove the video or continue editing the video into a version I don't really like, I'd rather than it with you guys!
(I had to upload this to Patreon so it's viewable from copyright, it's a long story - all other videos will be on YT as normal!)

This month for our Book Club we read The Wager: a tale of shipwreck, mutiny and murder - I loved it so much! I don't remember the last time I read a historical non-fiction but the author did such a great job of turning fairly confusing/dry historical journals into something really thrilling and exciting. I zoomed through this and had a hard time putting it down. I'll definitely be going back and reading more from this author!
If you're looking for something exciting and full of British history - I'd give it a go!

For August, we'll be reading A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. A little snippet about the author:
He wrote A Confederacy of Dunces in the early sixties and tried unsuccessfully to get the novel published; depressed, at least in part by his failure to place the book, he committed suicide in 1969. It was only through the tenacity of his mother that her son's book was eventually published and found the audience it deserved.
This is one of those "modern classics" that I always meant to read but never got around to it. So I'm excited to finally give it a go!

For our Book Club this month, we read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. Wow! One of my friend's recommended this one since I liked Educated (an old Book Club pick) and I can see why she recommended it!
This follows Jeannette's extremely difficult and neglectful childhood - but it's told completely direct and devoid of anger, pain or hate. Knowing that she went on to become a journalist, it definitely reads like a reporter - straight to the point without adding in much of her own opinion.
I thought this type of writing style for a memoir was really refreshing! She also shows the good and the bad in people - no one in this book is one dimension. Really makes you stop and think about your own life.
Overall a great book and a quick one, too! I felt like I sped through this one in no time, I couldn't put it down!
Next month, I'll be reading The Wager: a tale of shipwreck, mutiny and murder by David Grann. Another friend recommended this one and that's enough for me! This tells the true story of the Wager Mutiny - can't wait!

This month we read Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir and I loved it so much!! Ahhhh! As always, I went into this one blind and didn't read the back cover, so this was wildly (pleasantly) surprising! 🚀 I loved the tone, the direction and the overall plot - it certainly wasn't what I was expecting.
If you're looking for something "sci-fi-wholesome" I'd definitely recommend this one!
